By: Abhinav Mudigonda

If you do not know, the first school play was on April 6th, 7th and 8th. The play is Guys and Dolls and is about a gambler who has a game coming up and has to deal with his girlfriend, and take her to a trip to Havana, but the problem is his girlfriend hates gambling. The crew and cast and even the director said it was really fun to work on the production and work together with different grade. Overall, it was a great show! I can’t wait to see what they come up with next year. A group song during opening night of Guys and Dolls. (Photo: Trevor Savile)

Seattle Seahawks Draft One-Handed Shaquem Griffin

By: Malhar Kulkarni With the 141st pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select, Shaquem Griffin, linebacker, UCF. He will join his brother, Shaquill Griffin, in Seattle! The 6’0”, 227-pound linebacker was taken in the 5th round. Shaquem is competitive, and he is everywhere on the field. The brothers are poised to make noise in Seattle. Shaquem raised eyebrows at the NFL Combine, which is basically tryouts for the rookies, where he ran the fastest 40-yard dash timing since 2003. The St. Petersburg native was an electric player in college, and despite having only one hand, he put on a show in every match. Griffin was also the fastest defensive player since 2003 as well. NFL analyst Brooks said “Seahawks Draft Shaquem Griffin.” Yahoo! Sports, Yahoo!, Sports.Yahoo.com/Seahawks-Draft-Shaquem-Griffin- that Shaquem should have been drafted earlier, and many people 180831325.html. thought that his fall was because of his one hand. For this, Griffin was awarded Defensive Player Of The Year in his conference Shaquem Griffin will join other Seahawks draft picks Rashaad Penny, Will Dissly, and others, and will look to prove he was worth the 141st pick for the Seahawks.

Math Counts! Getting to Know Ms. Dawson

By Zara Sawar & Pranav Goteti By Tanmay Makhija Mathcounts is a regional competition held in Loudoun County. In I spoke with Mrs.Dawson. Here are some of the question that I have this competition, students are tested on a variety of different topics asked her. Here are some of her responses. She said being the in the subject of math. They are trained throughout the year to principal of Brambleton Middle is the best job she has ever had. compete against teams from different schools. A Mathcounts team She also was looking forward to continue to build strong was created for Brambleton Middle School and they have relationships with the students, the Brambleton community, and at performed well. To gain more knowledge about this extra- BAM. She is excited for the great new ideas our teachers have curricular, Zara Sarwar interviewed the coordinator of this planned for BAM students. The new clubs she was looking forward to Brambleton Mathcounts team, Ms. Parikh. are the volleyball club and anime club. Mrs.Dawson also said she taught French and Spanish before she became principal of When asked if the team won any competitions, Ms. Parikh replied Brambleton Middle. Her favorite movies are the French movies La saying “We have had some good performances and many kids have Vie en and Les Choristes. Her favorite book is Cane River. Her done great for their grade level, but overall in the first year of the favorite subject is, Guess? You got it right! It is...FRENCH! When school we have not yet won.” asked, she became a teacher because she wanted other people to learn French. Ms. Parikh told us that there were about 30 people in the activity, but only the top 10 were on the competition team. All middle school grades were eligible for participation. Participants are given many questions and compete against the other schools. On top of this, there's a time limit and all the problems require critical thinking skills.

Ms. Parikh explained the format of the competition as well. “All the schools get together, usually on a Saturday. There's one person who is a head of the competition… He organizes everything. He has the teams set up… And he puts together the award ceremony. This year the location [was] Eagle Ridge.” Eighth Grade Interviews

By: Tanmay Makhija & Malhar Kulkarni

Wondering what eighth grade will be like? We took the time for some interviews with our current 8th graders! We interviewed seven 8th graders during the school day and we summarized their responses to the following questions. When asked how they felt about Brambleton Middle School, all seven interviewees said that they loved the school and the fact that is was new. When they were asked what they would change about Brambleton some responses were adding more to the lunch menu, making the locker rooms less crowded, and adding hand sanitizer. Most people said that the teachers here at Brambleton are very nice and understanding. Out of the seven people interviewed, two people want hand sanitizer, one Should Texting While Walking Be Illegal? wants less crowded locker rooms, and the rest said there is no change needed to Brambleton. By: Malhar Kulkarni On the bright side, things look really good Pro(Yes): around here. See you all in 8th grade! Let’s say you’re walking down the sidewalk and not paying attention to the vehicles passing by. You get to a stop sign, still not paying attention, and cross when the light is green. That puts not only you in danger, but it also your friend. According to a study, from 2000 to 2011 there have been 11,000 walking injuries involving a device. You can argue that distracted drivers can also cause accidents, but if pedestrians are distracted too, then something needs to happen, fast. There can be many casualties having your nose two inches from a screen on a sidewalk. Of course, people get into accidents with vehicles, or they can bump into other people, maybe even damaging their own devices. They also can hit nonliving objects like trees, benches, or poles/street signs. If texting while driving is illegal, why not texting while walking? STAFF Con(No):

Sure, there are plenty of vehicle accidents worldwide. In fact, in 2016 alone, there Tanmay Makhija were 40,000 vehicle accidents globally. But were those necessarily caused by Editor-In-Chief pedestrians on their devices. Drivers are the real problem. Some drive drunk, others speed when they know children are on the roads. When drivers are the problem, Zara Sarwar why make an assumption that pedestrians are the problem? Instead of making a law Malhar Kulkarni banning texting while walking, why not make streets safer? Like putting multiple Abhinav Mudigonda police officers on each street, or lowering the speed limit, or maybe even banning Brice Grimes drunk driving? Don’t make an assumption it’s the pedestrians when the drivers Amelie Watson themselves are on their devices while driving. Pranav Goteti News Reporters
