Lesser known breeds, such as Galloways, had shorter runs and consequently rank high on the most-wanted list. They and their fathers before them have grown up with, lived with, made and developed the English pottery trade. The pot-bank and the shard ruck are, to them, as familiar, and as full of old associations, as the cowshed to the countryman or the nets along the links to the fishing popula- tion. To them any history of the development of their industry will be welcome. But potting is such a specialized industry, so confined to and associated with North Stafford- shire, that it is possible to study very clearly in the case of this industry the cause of its localization, and its gradual change from a home to a factory business.

  • Will the Real William Henshall Please Stand Up? by Paul Tubb
UK Belleek Collectors’ Group Newsletter 26/3 October 2005 Will the real William Henshall please stand up? By Paul Tubb Henshall Basket (first period) As most of you know by now, I have an interest in census returns arising from the use I can make of them whilst pursuing our family history. My wife Pat suggested that we use our current subscription to ancestry.co.uk to look for information on the various people who went over to Belleek from Stoke in the early years of our pottery. This website allows searches to be made of all the UK census returns from 1861 to 1901 inclusive, through an index which, in spite of some quite peculiar spellings engendered by the indexers, should enable us to follow a person or family through these fifty years at ten year intervals, provided of course that they remain within England or Wales. This availability saves us from having to visit the Family Records Centre in London to wind on the microfilm in the hope of finding the entries we need, which is how we have found most of our family history records in the past. The index, even given its quirks and inaccuracies, enables the kind of searches we have made about the Stoke potters to be done much more quickly and inexpensively. We used the list of names from Lady Marion Langham’s book and the brief details of their lives that we could glean from that and other sources. We have not yet exhausted all such names and decided to firstly concentrate on the better known names such as Henshall, Gallimore, Slater, Poole etc.

  • The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research Into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume No
The Speedway Researcher Promoting Research into the History of Speedway and Dirt Track Racing Volume No. 6 . No. 4 March 2004 Edited by Graham Fraser and Jim Henry Subscribers : 162 The End of Another Volume Despite the heading Volume / Number being confused a couple of time, this is the end of Volume Number 6. The good news is that we will continue with the magazine and progress to Volume Number 7. We will, however be seeking a modest (in absolute terms) increase in price of £1.00 raising the annual subscription to £4.00. This is to cover the increasing cost of photocopying and paper. We hope this keeps those of you who have complained of our low cost publication. We will be moving the production from the long serving Macintosh Performa 6200 running on Clarisworks to a PC machine running Windows XP and, maybe, just maybe, we can look at a revamp of style. Maybe, too, we will be able to experiment with photographs. We would love your views on this - we prefer a lot of words and limited amount of wasted white space. As usual we include our annual end of edition reports. Please fill in the form and tell us what you thought of Volume 6. We do try to incorporate your suggestions in your next Volume. Please let us know what you are doing as we will get round to publishing a who is doing what section in the next volume. Please use the form to let us know your wants as the first edition of the new volume is quite strong on readers’ needs.

  • Former Johnson Matthey, Whittle Rd, Meir (NLP Ref: ST1)
Former Johnson Matthey, Whittle Rd, Meir (NLP Ref: ST1) BARRIERS TO DELIVERY: GROSS SITE AREA: 8.62 ha Lack of market interest ESTIMATED NET DEVELOPABLE AREA: 8.19 ha This 8.6 ha site has a prominent frontage onto the A50 (the Uttoxeter Road), and to the east it borders the Meir Park Industrial Estate, while it is flanked by housing to the south and west. The site used to accommodate Johnson Matthey’s main UK factory, but this closed in 2002 and the site has not been used since. Nothing remains of the site’s former buildings and it now suffers from fly tipping and litter issues. However, the site has been identified as suitable for B1, B2 and B8 uses. In 2010 IDI Gazeley obtained detailed consent to redevelop the site in order to provide a distribution scheme amounting to 42,920 sqm1 and the site is being actively marketed. The site has adequate access to labour and there are nearby amenities/services. In addition, within 400m of the site are numerous bus stops, albeit many of these are located in the nearby residential areas. OVERALL SITE GRADE: Good SITE RECOMMENDATION: Retain for employment use 1 As per application ref: 48907/FUL 9932770v7 Meir Depot, Uttoxeter Road, Meir - CFS 21 (NLP Ref: ST2) BARRIERS TO DELIVERY: GROSS SITE AREA: 1.76 ha Lack of market interest/poor access onto the A50 ESTIMATED NET DEVELOPABLE AREA: 1.67 ha This brownfield site (1.7ha) is located on the northern side of the A50 (the Uttoxeter Road), opposite the former Johnson Matthey factory site, and is included in this assessment as it was a call for sites submission.
