Levin https://www.duo.uio.no Printing: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo Summary Hlǫðskviða and Wīdsīð are two Germanic alliterative poems whose current forms are attested in texts written in separate languages, periods, and regions: the former in Old Norse- Icelandic from late-medieval Iceland, and the latter in Old English from later Anglo-Saxon England. Despite these differing contexts, several parallels in the poems’ content—many of which they share with that of other early-medieval continental and insular sources as well as Old Norse saga and Eddic literature—indicate that these narratives did not emerge in isolation. Within this complex of source material, the prevalence of concepts such as the Goth-Hun conflict, the reign and fall of the Gothic king Ermanaric, and the movements and conflicts of early-medieval peoples and their leaders suggests that the events of the Migration Period gave rise to a wider tradition of legends and folklore that spread across early-medieval Northern Europe, evolving both independently and through contact across vast tracts of time and space. This inquiry is driven by an interdisciplinary approach to a comparison between Hlǫðskviða and Wīdsīð, drawing on linguistic, literary, historical, archaeological, runological, folkloristic, and philological evidence. Its emphasis is firmly on the content of the poems, although discussion of the poems’ form is undertaken when pertinent to the notions of tradition and relative periodization. This wider approach allows for the demonstration of both means and motives—political, economic, social, and cultural—for the transmission and use of this tradition throughout the Baltic and North Sea regions, as well as the identification of firmer, more salient links between the poems than a mere comparison of the two texts could achieve. Furthermore, this study proposes that a similar approach, if applied on a considerably larger scale, could be instrumental in shedding further light on a relatively obscure regional period of human history. i This page intentionally left blank ii Foreword First and foremost, my sincerest gratitude is owed to my thesis supervisor, Professor Karl-Gunnar A. Haymes One of the proudest inventions of German scholarship in the nineteenth century was the Heldenlied, the heroic song, which was seen by scholars as the main conduit of Germanic heroic legend from the Period of Migrations to the time of their being written down in the Middle Ages. The concept stems indirectly from the suggestions of several eighteenth-century Homeric scholars that since the Homeric poems were much too long to have been memorized and performed in oral tradition, they must have existed as shorter, episodic songs. Friedrich August Wolf’s well-known Prolegomena ad Homerum (1795) collected evidence for the idea that writing was not used for poetry until long after Homer’s time. He argued for a thorough recension of the poem under (or perhaps by) Pisistratus in the sixth century BCE as the first comprehensive written Homer. These ideas were almost immediately applied to the Middle High German Nibelungenlied by Karl Lachmann (1816), who was trained as a classical philologist and indeed continued to contribute in that area at the same time that he was one of the most influential members of the generation that founded the new discipline of Germanistik. On the basis of rough spots and contradictions (not only Homer nods!) Lachmann thought he could recognize twenty separate Lieder in the Middle High German epic. At the same time that Lachmann was deconstructing the German medieval epic, Elias Lönnrot was assembling the Finnish epic he called Kalevala from shorter songs in conscious imitation of the Homer (or Pisistratus) described by Wolf.

Wie dunkel war also das Mittelalter? 88 2020 Abstract: Wenngleich die Geschichte der mittelalterlichen Handschrift bereits vielfach un- tersucht worden ist, lohnt es sich immer wieder, die zentrale Rolle der Handschriften für die moderne Bewertung jener mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft in Betracht zu ziehen. Immer noch hören wir viel zu schnell vom sogenannten ‘dunklen Mittelalter’, so als ob jeder Aspekt der damaligen Zeit negativ oder primitiv, ja barbarisch gewesen wäre. Kulturhistorisch erweist sich solch ein Pauschalurteil sowieso immer als höchst problematisch. Indem hier erneut die Entste- hung und das Wesen mittelalterlicher Handschriften vor allem im literarhistorischen Kontext betrachtet wird, ergibt sich die ungemein wichtige Möglichkeit, innovative epistemologische Kategorien zu entwickeln, um unser Wahrnehmungsvermögen vergangener Kulturen wie der des europäischen Mittelalters kritisch zu schärfen und zu erkennen, dass unsere Urteile über die Vergangenheit meist doch durch konkrete subjektive Filter bestimmt sind, die kaum der kritischen Überprüfung standzuhalten vermögen. It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age.

Die mit ihm verfolgte Intention war es, ausgehend von den Graden der Fiktionalisierung des jeweils entfalteten Geschehens eine Differenz zwischen Íslendingasaga und Fornaldarsaga zu erarbeiten. Dabei hatte sich gezeigt, dass die Íslendingasaga trotz all der Momente, die sie als 'realistisch' erlebbar macht, das literarische Phänomen der Semantisierung von Form- elementen kennt, und dass die Fornaldarsaga trotz ihrer Phantastik solche Seman- tisierung nicht oder kaum aufweist. Ohne die mittelalterlichen Texte über jüngere und unangemessene Kriterien und Kategorien beschreiben zu wollen, ließe sich also ein Differenzmerkmal darin erblicken, dass die Íslendingasaga strukturell der Fiktion und die Fornaldarsaga strukturell dem Tatsachenbericht zuzuordnen sind. Erst im Verlauf der Gattungsgeschichte tritt in der Fornaldarsaga der Aspekt der Unter- haltung in den Vordergrund. Mit alledem soll nicht gesagt sein, dass der moderne Begriff der 'Literatur' dem originären Kontext gerecht wird, auch nicht, dass die Intention der Redaktoren und Traditoren damit beschrieben wäre. Das strukturelle Differenzmerkmal ist dennoch nicht zu verkennen und es gälte auszuwerten, was das über die fiktionale Gestaltung von Geschehen im isländischen Mittelalter besagt. Krell Guidance: Mikael Males Master Thesis in Nordic Viking and Medieval Culture Summary The poetry of Bragi inn Gamli and Einarr Skúlason has been thoroughly studied by many Old Norse scholars, but never directly in comparison to one another. This paper will investigate the nuances of each author’s verse, specifically regarding the way in which they utilize kennings, and draw conclusions based upon their similarities and differences. Both Bragi and Einarr composed within the same language, geographical area, and poetic tradition; they used similar kenning types that evolve from pagan imagery; and each describes a precious weapon given to them by a ruler whom they praise via a traditional skaldic long style poem. However, they could not be more different. This is due to the fact that Einarr’s kennings are meant to show his scholastic prowess, and Bragi’s are meant to affect his audience and move his plot based verse forward. The poetry of Bragi Boddason makes use of pagan mythology, ekphrasis, nýgerving, ofljóst and metaphors in the form of kennings, just as the poetry of Einarr Skúlason does. And yet the poems differ so greatly. Bragi’s kennings are meant to affect his audience on an emotional level, whereas Einarr’s are meant to impress on a scholarly level.
