Parker-McGee Charles Gore and the Theology of Priesthood Abstract The following dissertation is an investigation into the constitutive elements of a theology of priesthood to be found within the work of Charles Gore. Looking at Gore’s thought over a whole range of theological areas, this dissertation advances Gore’s theology of priesthood and develops his rich theological legacy with fresh insight into what he suggests the ordained priesthood may be called to be and do. As such it uncovers how the theology of priesthood is tied into Gore’s entire theological vision, connecting to his accounts of the Church, the sacraments and the incarnation. I also thank Sarah, Jasmine and Thomas for their support and patience. 4 Charles Gore and the Theology of Priesthood Introduction a) An Outline of this Dissertation and its Aspirations. The following dissertation is an investigation into the constitutive elements of a theology of priesthood to be found within the work of one of the most enduring authorities on the subject: Charles Gore. Charles Gore is commonly held to be one of the most significant theological thinkers of the turn of the twentieth century. He offers insights into all of the common themes of theological thought, and in so doing shows a remarkable intellect and an impressive dedication to the historical well of thinking from within the Christian tradition. According to Peter Waddell, ‘Gore is a model of how to write theologically. His was a big mind, ranging freely over all the central theological themes and with a seamless vision of how theology, Christology, ecclesiology, sacraments, Scripture, ethics and politics all flowed into each other. Christians should read Gore today to see what a coherent vision looks like, and how being soaked in the ancient traditions of the Church fits one to interpret and engage modern society, culture and politics.’1 This is some commendation and one I wholeheartedly support. From this standpoint, this dissertation looks to focus most intently upon one aspect of Gore’s theological thought, the theology of priesthood. It is my opinion that any investigation into incarnational theology, ecclesiology or theology of priesthood will be far richer as a result of exploring what Gore 1 Peter Waddell, Charles Gore: Radical Anglican (London: Canterbury Press, 2014), p. xxxv 5 has to offer the discussion of these fields. Many theological investigations into Christology, ecclesiology and theology of priesthood make note of Gore’s contributions to these areas of theological thought.2 There are also a number of investigations that offer a more precise focus upon Gore’s life and the wide scope of his theology.3 This research project will draw upon a wide selection of these works. Nevertheless, it is my understanding that there has not to date been any extended investigation that has aspired to drawing a more complete theological understanding of Gore’s theology of priesthood that has also included within it reflections on how that theology of priesthood relates to other aspects of his theological thought, such as the incarnation and the sacraments. Therefore, in the chapters that follow I am going to explore Gore’s thought regarding the theology of priesthood, and I will for the first time show how the theology of priesthood is tied in to his whole theological vision, connecting to his accounts of the Church, the sacraments and the incarnation. This dissertation provides an original exegesis of Gore’s work from this perspective, illuminating both his theology of priesthood and the other topics connected to it. Looking at Gore’s thought over a whole range of theological areas, I hope to further advance Gore’s theology of priesthood, developing Gore’s rich theological legacy with fresh insight into what he suggests the ordained priesthood may be called to be and do. It should be noted that this investigation is chiefly concerned with uncovering the constituent factors of Gore’s wider theology of the priesthood and as such is an original exegesis of his work. It is not chiefly concerned with my own independent historical or theological work on the theology of priesthood, which would prove a distraction from this dissertation’s main purpose. Only if I consider it to be advantageous to the uncovering and explaining of Gore’s thinking will this work include wider theological or historical claims.4 On the whole, however, this study will not get too heavily side-tracked into any controversy that might be presently debated regarding any particular area of Gore’s thought or his historical perspective. In order to convey Gore’s theology of priesthood most completely, I will divide Gore’s thinking into three significant chapters and a concluding chapter. The first chapter will focus upon Gore’s work on the incarnation and will do so with a special focus towards its consequent factors for a theology of priesthood.

    Alec Vidler On Christian Faith and Secular Despair Born in Rye, Sussex, son of a shipping businessman, Alec Vidler ( 1899‐1991)was educated at Sutton Valence School, Kent, read theology at Selwyn College, Cambridge (B.A. 1921),then trained for the Anglican ministry at Wells Theological College. He disliked Wells and transferred to the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, Cambridge, an Anglo‐Catholic community of celibates, and was ordained priest in 1923. He retained a life‐time affection for the celibate monkish life, never marrying but having a wide range of friends, including Malcolm Muggeridge, who was at Selwyn with him. Muggeridge’s father was a prominent Labourite and Vidler imbibed leftist sympathies in that circle. His first curacy was in Newcastle, working in the slums. He soon came to love his work with working class parishioners and was reluctantly transferred to St Aidan’s Birmingham, where he became involved in a celebrated stoush with the bishop E. W. Barnes, himself a controversialist of note. Vidler’s Anglo‐ Catholic approach to ritual clashed with Barnes’s evangelicalism. Vidler began a prolific career of publication in the 1920s and 30s. In 1931 he joined friends like Wilfred Ward at the Oratory House in Cambridge, steeping himself in religious history and theology, including that of Reinhold Niebuhr and “liberal Catholicism”. In 1939 Vidler became warden of St Deiniol’s Library, Hawarden (founded by a legacy from Gladstone) and also editor of the leading Anglican journal Theology, which he ran until 1964, exerting considerable progressive influence across those years. He also facilitated a number of religious think‐tanks in these, and later, years.

    A Brief History of Christ Church MEDIEVAL PERIOD Christ Church was founded in 1546, and there had been a college here since 1525, but prior to the Dissolution of the monasteries, the site was occupied by a priory dedicated to the memory of St Frideswide, the patron saint of both university and city. St Frideswide, a noble Saxon lady, founded a nunnery for herself as head and for twelve more noble virgin ladies sometime towards the end of the seventh century. She was, however, pursued by Algar, prince of Leicester, for her hand in marriage. She refused his frequent approaches which became more and more desperate. Frideswide and her ladies, forewarned miraculously of yet another attempt by Algar, fled up river to hide. She stayed away some years, settling at Binsey, where she performed healing miracles. On returning to Oxford, Frideswide found that Algar was as persistent as ever, laying siege to the town in order to capture his bride. Frideswide called down blindness on Algar who eventually repented of his ways, and left Frideswide to her devotions. Frideswide died in about 737, and was canonised in 1480. Long before this, though, pilgrims came to her shrine in the priory church which was now populated by Augustinian canons. Nothing remains of Frideswide’s nunnery, and little - just a few stones - of the Saxon church but the cathedral and the buildings around the cloister are the oldest on the site. Her story is pictured in cartoon form by Burne-Jones in one of the windows in the cathedral. One of the gifts made to the priory was the meadow between Christ Church and the Thames and Cherwell rivers; Lady Montacute gave the land to maintain her chantry which lay in the Lady Chapel close to St Frideswide’s shrine.

  • The Earliest Life of St Dunstan
    The Earliest Life of St Dunstan Michael Winterbottom Dunstan, the most important of the tenth-century reformers of the English church, was bom near Glastonbury in Somerset. In 940 he became abbot of the local monastery. After exile under King Eadwig, he was favoured by King Edgar, and was successively bishop of Worcester and of London, be­ fore becoming archbishop of Canterbury in 960. He died in 988. Much of the material concerning him is collected by William Stubbs in his Memorials o f Saint Dunstan (Rolls Series 63 [1874]). It includes a series of Lives, the ear­ liest of which is the topic of the present article (Stubbs, 3-52). This is dedi­ cated to a slightly later archbishop, Ælfric, who held office from 995 to 1005. The author describes himself as ‘omnium extimus sacerdotum B. uilisque Saxonum indigena’. It has been cogently argued by Michael Lapidge1 that ‘B.’ was an Englishman, trained at Glastonbury, who was in Dunstan’s retinue until moving to Liège around 960 and eventually dying there. It is certainly true that the author tells us little or nothing of the events of Dunstan’s archbishopric: a topic to which I shall return in the second part of this paper.   • ABSTRACT in the Early Nineteenth Century, the Church
    ABSTRACT In the early nineteenth century, the Church of England faced a crisis of self- understanding as a result of political and social changes occurring in Britain. The church was forced to determine what it meant to be the established church of the nation in light of these new circumstances. In the 1830s, a revival took place within the Church of England which prompted a renewal of the theology and practice of the church, including the Eucharist. This revival, known as the Oxford Movement, breathed new life into the High Church party. A heightened emphasis was placed on the sacramental life and on the Eucharist as the focus of worship. Adherents of the Oxford Movement developed a Eucharistic theology which promoted a closer connection between the elements and Christ’s presence in the Eucharist than did the earlier Anglican tradition. One of the exponents of this Eucharistic theology was Robert Isaac Wilberforce (1802- 1857). The second son of anti-slavery crusader William Wilberforce, Robert was raised in a family of prominent Anglican Evangelicals. At the University of Oxford he came under the influence of his tutor, John Keble, who was one of the four leaders of the Oxford Movement during its heyday. The Gorham case, whose focus was ostensibly the question of baptismal regeneration, turned into a debate on the state’s control over the established church.
