Hollingsworth 2009 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION POLITICAL PIETY: EVANGELICALS AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND GEORGIA The study of southern evangelicals during the late colonial and revolutionary eras of American history has focused primarily on the social antagonisms that separated evangelicals from southern elites and has concluded that the rapid growth of post-war evangelicalism came as a result of evangelical acquiescence to southern gentry mores. Most study of southern evangelicals has concentrated on the upper South missing important developments in the Deep South which contradict historical assumptions of Separate triumph and the subsequent subversion of radical evangelicalism by evangelical leaders eager for societal acceptance. Evangelicals were not a monolithic movement. Key doctrines, primarily the need for conversion, united them, but the social range of evangelical groups included outcast Separate Baptists to elite members of Charleston and Savannah society. Because evangelicals have been viewed as outside the mainstream of southern society, evangelical contributions to the revolutionary cause have gone mostly unnoticed. This work seeks to illuminate the contributions of evangelicals to the American Revolution by examining the roles of evangelicals in the Imperial Crisis and in the war itself. Evangelical leaders were strong proponents of American rights. Far from being outcasts, many evangelicals enjoyed positions of prominence in southern society and several served in the governments of South Carolina and Georgia. Almost all evangelicals in this region supported the American cause and were viewed by many elite revolutionaries as indispensable to solidifying the unity necessary to fight Great Britain. Evangelicals and Anglican elites worked together to cement support for provincial government and bring about the disestablishment of the Anglican Church. Evangelicals also served an important role in winning the American Revolution in the South. Evangelicals, particularly New Light Presbyterians and Regular Baptists, formed a major portion of the militia that rose to bedevil Lord Cornwallis‟s attempts to implement British strategic goals. His failure in South Carolina led to his ultimate downfall at Yorktown. In the final chapter, this work examines the proud, if divided, republicanism of southern evangelicals, highlights their political activity, and explores the beginning of the evangelical ascent to religious dominance in the Deep South. Not many books were reprinted more frequently during the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century than the Hymns and Spiritual Songs of Isaac Watts. Few books became more familiar, and certainly but few played a greater part in the history of our American Presbyterianism, both in its worship and in its strifes. But with all this familiarity and multiplica tion of editions, the early history, textual and bibliographical, of the hymns has remained practically unknown. This is ac counted for by the fact that by the time interest in such studies began to be awakened, the early editions of the book itself had disappeared from sight. As long ago as 1854, Peter Cunningham, when editing the Life of Watts in Johnson's Lives of the Poets, stated that "a first edition of his Hymns, 1707, is rarer than a first edition of the Pilgrim's Progress, of which it is said only one copy is known." The second edition is not less rare. The Rev. James Mearns, assistant editor of Julian's Dictionary of Hymnology, stated (The Guardian, London, January 29, 1902) that he had never seen or heard of a copy. They moved across the Atlantic to Tset up their religious Utopia in the New World. Spiritual exaltation and earnestness sustained them amid the perils and pains of establishing homes and churches in the New England wilderness. Clergymen were their leaders. On the Sabbath, the minister, in gown and bands, preached to his flock beneath a tree or under some rude shelter. On other days, in more practical attire, he guided and shared the varied labors incident to the foundation of the new settlement. The younger generation and the later comers, however, had more worldliness mingled with their aims, but re- ligion continued a dominant factor in the expanding colonial life. Perhaps the common man felt personal enthusiasm for religion less than he did necessary regard for provisions of the law, yet as he wandered into un- occupied parts of the colony, he was not leaving the watch and ward of the church.     1 ROOTS AND ROUTES The journey embarked upon by Black Loyalists destined for the Baha- mas was not marked by a rupture from their past experiences in colonial America, but rather reflected a continuity shaped by conditions of en- slavement and their entry into a British colony as persons of color. Like West African victims of the transatlantic slave trade, Black Loyalists arriv- ing in the Bahamas did not come as a tabula rasa, but rather brought with them various ideas aboutproof religion, land, politics, and even freedom. Thus, upon arrival in the Bahamas the lessons of the Revolutionary War were appropriated and reinterpreted by Black Loyalist men and women in a va- riety of ways, often with varying consequences. Such complex transmuta- tions within the Bahamas invite an analytical approach that examines the roots of such thought as it emerged out of the social and political world of colonial British North America. A brief examination of leading Black Loyalists in the Bahamas demon- strates that the world they lived in was indelibly shaped by the world they left behind. Prince Williams’ remarkable story began in colonial Georgia where he was born free, but was later “cheated out of his freedom and sold to an American.”1 Although his slave owner is never mentioned by name, Williams’ account reveals that he was forced to serve “this man” when “the British troops came to Georgia.” Taking advantage of the chaos of the American Revolution, Williams, in an act of self-assertion, escaped to the British side in order to claim freedom as a Black Loyalist.

It survived bouts of despair, depression, and disillusionment, a pervasive sense that it was never going to be finished. But here it is—late, but finished. Patrick N. Allitt, Ph.D. Professor of History, Emory University Patrick Allitt is Professor of History at Emory University. He was born and raised in England, attending schools in his Midlands hometown of Derby. An undergraduate at Oxford University, he graduated with history honors in 1977. After a year of travel, he studied for the doctorate in American History at the University of California, Berkeley, gaining the degree in 1986. Married to a Michigan native in 1984, Professor Allitt was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Divinity School for the study and teaching of American religious history and spent the years 1985 to 1988 in Massachusetts. Next, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where for the last twelve years he has been a member of Emory University’s history department, except for one year (1992–1993) when he was a Fellow of the Center for the Study of American Religion at Princeton University. Professor Allitt is the author of Catholic Intellectuals and Conservative Politics in America 1950-1985 (1993), Catholic Converts: British and American Intellectuals Turn to Rome (1997), and Major Problems in American Religious History (2000) and is now writing a book on American religious history since 1945, to be titled The Godly People.

Trollinger, Ph.D. Committee Member ii ABSTRACT CHANGED, SET APART, AND EQUAL: A STUDY OF ORDINATION IN THE BAPTIST CONTEXT Name: Malone, Jonathan Anthony University of Dayton Advisor: Dr. Dennis Doyle The American Baptist denomination is often characterized as an ecclesiological grass-roots organization. The theology of such a denomination is practiced organically by the people and is seldom articulated by the academy. Thus one cannot find a well articulated theological understanding of what ordination means for the individual and the community in the Baptist context. A synthesis of Geertz’s thick description, Lindbeck’s approach to doctrine, and McClendon’s understandings of speech-acts and conviction will offer a methodology through which one can articulate a theology of ordination. In doing so, we will find that the “call” and a relationship with a congregation are essential for ordination to occur. Such a theology will suggest that one is changed through ordination, and this change is relational in nature. The Catholic concept of Sacramental Consciousness offers a way to articulate the community’s awareness of the pastor’s relational change while at the same time maintaining the egalitarian nature of a Baptist community.

YET, ANOTHER PRE-DARBY RAPTURE STATEMENT by Thomas Ice In the eight years that I have been working as Executive Director of the Pre-Trib Research Center, there have been three major discoveries of writings teaching some form of a pretribulational rapture. The most recent find has been brought forth from an unexpected source that I will reveal to you in this article. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Since many non-pretribulationists often formulate a historical argument against those teaching the pre-trib rapture, it is important to know that some did teach a rapture before the tribulation and distinct from the second coming. Rapture critic Gary DeMar says, “All attempts to find a pretrib Rapture any earlier than around 1830 do not stand up to historical scrutiny.”1 Of course, J. N. Darby himself first discovered pretribulationism from his own biblical studies during December 1826 and January 1827.2 But there are those who preceded Darby, as I have written about in the past.
