Foreword:

St Lachtains, Church of , is an early Christian settlement believed to have been founded by St Lachtain in the early 7th century. The doorway of the present church was build around 1150. The church was substantially rebuilt in 1730. A more recent renovation of the church was completed in 2012. The church is surrounded by a walled graveyard. The memorials were recently compiled by the Freshford Gaveyard Recording Group and published in 2014. The earlier recording (1970) by M.M. Phelan and M. Buggy is given in this document and the tomb numbers of the 2014 recording are given in brackets in the column headed Tomb No. (Mary T. Brennan).

Original Foreword, 1970: The Old Cemetery in a badly kept condition was quite an onerous task as many monuments were covered with ivy, briars, etc., some lying face downward on the ground and are therefore unrecorded. Others were broken and falling forward making the task of recording more difficult. Some clergymen are buried here but all of those mentioned in Canon Carrigan's Vol. II could not be found. About four Altar Tombs could not be read and could possibly be those of Rev. Richard Laracy, Rev. P. Marum and Very Rev. William Hart as recorded by Carrigan. Many old tombs are here, the oldest being 1697 and other graves are in use up to the present day (1970). In the Old Cemetery about 135 were recorded, but there are more quite unreadable and inaccessible due to the bad condition of this cemetery. Garden of Remembrance: On left side of entrance to the church there is a small gate leading to a little cemetery called “The Garden of Remembrance”. It contains only eight graves all except one being 20th century. The “Garden of Remembrance” is beautifully kept as is also the inside of the church.
