It is increasingly becoming a go-to country for European birders in Spring, and offers some of the most exciting birding in the Western Palearctic biogeographic region. Not only does it offer a chance to see Afro-European migration at its peak, but it also offers a plethora of exciting and special endemic and near-endemic species at its core. Add to this the fact that throughout the tour we have excellent accommodation and some of the best food available anywhere in the world (in my opinion), it all goes toward making Morocco a must-visit location for any birder branching out into the world. It is also currently by far the safest North African country to visit, with little crime and none of the problems that plague the rest of the region, and therefore presents a comfortable and safe opportunity to experience North Africa. This year’s tour followed our tried and tested route, starting in the manic city of Marrakesh at a serene hotel amongst the craziness, a quick departure to the idyllic Ourika Valley and the high snow-capped peaks of Oukameiden and the high Atlas Mountains, before descending to the stony desert around Boumalne Dades and the ochre-cast dunes of the Sahara at Erg Chebbi. -

Despite having a rich avifauna in Iran, limited number of studies have been conducted on lice fauna of wild birds in this region. This study was carried out to identify lice species of passerine birds in East of Iran. A total of 106 passerine birds of 37 species were captured. Their bodies were examined for lice infestation. Fifty two birds (49.05%) of 106 captured birds were infested. From high mountain passes with snow draped summits to stony, hamada deserts, sandy deserts, marshes, estuaries and rivers. We took advantage of many opportunities to immerse ourselves in the culture of the country. We visited souks, markets, small villages bustling with local commercial activities involving donkeys, carts, camels and we even saw a mud brick making plant and a city bakery in action. The very special desert birds thrilled us; Houbara Bustard, Desert Sparrow, Brown-necked Raven, sandgrouse, Cream- coloured Courser. Thick-billed Lark, Desert Lark and the inimitable Hoopoe Lark were all thoroughly enjoyed. We also studied scorpions, beetles, digger wasps, dragonflies, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians and endearing mammals such as Gundis, Barbary Ground Squirrels and Fat Sand Rats. The weather was idyllic. We enjoyed sunshine every day with no rain at all and calm conditions. -

Abstract The crested lark Galerida cristata inhabited almost exclusively open areas in the out- skirts of new settlements of Warsaw in the years 1980-2006. The highest density of the species (0.11 pairs/km2) in the entire city (494 km2) was recorded in 1986, and locally (a plot of 2.6 km2) – 5.7 pairs/km2 in 1980. Breeding period lasted from April 12th (the first egg) to July 31st (the last fledgeling) with broods most inten- sively initiated in May. There were usually 4-5 eggs per brood, rarely 3 (mean 4.36±0.60 sD). The mean number of eggs in the first brood was 4.47±0.64 eggs, in the first repeated brood – 4.17±0.98 eggs and in the second brood – 4.09±0.70 eggs. Most pairs (71%) performed the second brood. Reproductive success of the population of 17 pairs studied in 1980 was 3.47 fledgelings leaving the nest per nesting pair (nearly 40% of broods were destroyed). Breeding losses resulted mostly from human activity and intensive rainfalls. Population of G. cristata in Warsaw was characterized by a great dynamics. None of the 17 pairs living on the plot of 2.6 km2 in 1980 remained in 1987 due to the management of new settlements. -

Hope House, Old Bolingbroke, Spilsby, Lincolnshire, PE23 4EX, UK Introduction Kruger National Park in South Africa covers an area of 18,989 square kilometres, making it one of the largest game reserves in Africa. It has become a major tourist attraction, largely due to the biodiversity within the park which comprises Baobab sandveld, Mopane scrub, Lebombo knobthorn-marula bushveld, mixed acacia thicket, Combretum-silver clusterleaf woodland and riverine forest ecosystems. Kruger supports over 500 species of birds, almost 150 species of mammal (including all of the Big Five), over 100 species of reptile and almost 2000 plant species. Operation Wallacea and WEI have worked in partnership with SANparks to collect biodiversity monitoring data in Kruger. Between 4th July and 12th August 2009, teams of volunteers led by experienced guides conducted bird point counts across Kruger National Park, South Africa. Additionally point counts took place in Nzikazi concession of Kruger from 28th April until 12th August. The aim of this study is to use this dataset to explore patterns of bird diversity in the park and develop recommendations for monitoring birds in Kruger. In this study we use a high-quality field monitoring dataset for an assemblage of birds integrated in GIS with readily available environmental data derived from remote sensing in order to model and validate the distributions of 51 bird species in Kruger. -
