  • Lepidoptera of Albany Hill, Alameda Co., California
LEPIDOPTERA OF ALBANY HILL, ALAMEDA CO., CALIFORNIA Jerry A. Powell Essig Museum of Entomology University of California, Berkeley and Robert L. Langston Kensington, CA November 1999; edited 2009 The following list summarizes observations of Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) at Albany Hill, Alameda Co., California, during 1995-1999. Data originate from about 75 daytime and crepuscular visits of 0.5 to 3.5 hrs, in all months of the year. All of the butterfly species and some of the moths were recorded by RLL, most of the moth species and their larval host plants by JAP. A total of 145 species is recorded (30 butterflies, 115 moths), a modest number considering the extent and diversity of the flora. However, many of the potential larval host plants may be present in too small patches to support populations of larger moths or butterflies. Nonetheless, we were surprised that colonies of some of the species survive in a small area that has been surrounded by urban development for many decades, including some rare ones in the East Bay region, as annotated below. Moreover, the inventory is incomplete. A more comprehensive census would be accomplished by trapping moths attracted to ultraviolet lights. In a habitat of this size, however, such survey would attract an unknown proportion of species from surrounding areas. Larval collections are indicated by date-based JAP lot numbers (e.g. 95C37 = 1995, March, 37th collection). Larval foods of most of the other species are documented in other populations. Host plants are recorded at Albany Hill for 75 species (65% of the moths, 52% of the total); the rest were observed as adults only.

Review of butterfly, moth and other natural history sightings 2019 January January started dry and settled but mostly cloudy with high pressure dominant, and it remained generally dry and often mild during the first half of the month. The second half became markedly cooler with overnight frosts and the last week saw a little precipitation, some which was occasionally wintry. With the mild weather continuing from December 2018 there were a small number of migrant moths noted in January, comprising a Dark Sword-grass at Seabrook on the 5th, a Silver Y there on the 13th and 2 Plutella xylostella (Diamond-back Moths) there on the 15th, whilst a very unseasonal Dark Arches at Hythe on the 4th may have been of immigrant origin. Dark Sword-grass at Seabrook (Paul Howe) Dark Arches at Hythe (Ian Roberts) More typical species involved Epiphyas postvittana (Light Brown Apple Moth), Satellite, Mottled Umber, Winter Moth, Chestnut, Spring Usher and Early Moth. Early Moth at Seabrook (Paul Howe) Spring Usher at Seabrook (Paul Howe) The only butterfly noted was a Red Admiral at Nickolls Quarry on the 1st but the mild weather encouraged single Buff-tailed Bumblebees to appear at Seabrook on the 7th and Mill Point on the 8th, whilst a Minotaur Beetle was attracted to light at Seabrook on the 6th. A Common Seal and two Grey Seals were noted regularly off Folkestone, whilst at Hare was seen near Botolph’s Bridge on the 1st and a Mink was noted there on the 17th. February After a cold start to the month it was generally mild from the 5th onwards.

  • Projektowany Rezerwat Przyrody „Olszak” W Górach Opawskich – Ważna Ostoja Entomofauny (Lepidoptera, Neuroptera) KOMUNIKA
Wiad. entomol. 29 Supl.: 111-114 Poznań 2010 KOMUNIKATY NAUKOWE COMMUNICATIONS Projektowany rezerwat przyrody „Olszak” w Górach Opawskich – ważna ostoja entomofauny (Lepidoptera, Neuroptera) A planned nature reserve ”Olszak” in the Opawskie Mountains – an important refuge of entomofauna (Lepidoptera, Neuroptera) Tomasz BLAIK Zakład Zoologii Bezkręgowców, Katedra Biosystematyki, Uniwersytet Opolski, Oleska 22, 45-052 Opole; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT: Southern slope of Mt. Olszak (453 m) in the Opawskie Mts. (Eastern Sudety Mts., SW Poland) is planned to be protected as an entomological-and-phytocenotic reserve. The main objectives of the protection are acidophilous oak forest and maple-linden slope forest being habitats of many rare species of moths and lacewings known from not numerous localities in Poland. Out of them, the populations of two unique in native lepidopteran fauna, saproxylic and phytosaprophagous species: Alabonia staintoniella (ZELL.) and Zanclognatha zelleralis (WCK.), are preserved here at their northernmost locality in Europe. KEY WORDS: Lepidoptera, Neuroptera, protection, nature reserve, Mt. Olszak, Sudety Mts. Owady Gór Opawskich należą do słabo zbadanych na tle innych obsza- rów górskich Polski. Zainteresowanie entomologów tym niewielkim pa- smem Sudetów Wschodnich wzrosło dopiero w połowie lat 90. zeszłego wie- ku. Obiektem badań były tu wybrane rodziny chrząszczy (Coleoptera) (KUŚ- KA 1998; MAZUR 2008) i szczególnie pluskwiaki różnoskrzydłe (Heteropte- ra) (LIS B., LIS J. A. 2002; HEBDA, LIS 2007), a w ostatnim dziesięcioleciu także motyle (Lepidoptera) i owady siatkoskrzydłe (Neuroptera), będące obecnie w końcowej fazie opracowania (dane własne autora). Dotychczaso- 112 T. BLAIK we badania nad dwoma ostatnimi grupami owadów wykazały znaczne bogac- two tutejszej fauny oraz obecność bardzo rzadko spotykanych w Polsce ga- tunków (BLAIK 2007, 2010; BLAIK, KOREK 2008).

Enns 69 a THE BAGWORM-MOTH FAUNA OF LINZ, DANUBE (UPPER AUSTRIA) (LEPIDOPTERA: PSYCHIDAE) SUMMARY All available data on bagworms (Psychidae, Lepidoptera) of the urban districts of Linz (Upper Austria) are presented. 22 species have been recorded, their habitats are summari zed critically in a map. Recent data on Psychids are rare, that is in the major part due to the little collecting activities of the recent past. Only few species, which live in warm-dry, little affected habitats, seems to be really endangered. An unusual high number of species, 13, has been recorded from the habitat .Llrfahrwänd". © Naturkdl. Das liegt nicht daran, daß sie so selten wären. Der Grund ist vielmehr ihre versteckte Lebensweise und die Unattraktivität für Schmetterlingsammler, da die Tiere unscheinbar und außerdem schwierig zu determinieren sind. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist eine Zusammenfassung aller Daten sowie eine stich probenartige Bestandsaufnahme von Psychiden in ausgesuchten Le bensräumen.

  • Moths of Poole Harbour Species List
Moths of Poole Harbour is a project of Birds of Poole Harbour Moths of Poole Harbour Species List Birds of Poole Harbour & Moths of Poole Harbour recording area The Moths of Poole Harbour Project The ‘Moths of Poole Harbour’ project (MoPH) was established in 2017 to gain knowledge of moth species occurring in Poole Harbour, Dorset, their distribution, abundance and to some extent, their habitat requirements. The study area uses the same boundaries as the Birds of Poole Harbour (BoPH) project. Abigail Gibbs and Chris Thain, previous Wardens on Brownsea Island for Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT), were invited by BoPH to undertake a study of moths in the Poole Harbour recording area. This is an area of some 175 square kilometres stretching from Corfe Castle in the south to Canford Heath in the north of the conurbation and west as far as Wareham. 4 moth traps were purchased for the project; 3 Mercury Vapour (MV) Robinson traps with 50m extension cables and one Actinic, Ultra-violet (UV) portable Heath trap running from a rechargeable battery. This was the capability that was deployed on most of the ensuing 327 nights of trapping. Locations were selected using a number of criteria: Habitat, accessibility, existing knowledge (previously well-recorded sites were generally not included), potential for repeat visits, site security and potential for public engagement. Field work commenced from late July 2017 and continued until October. Generally, in the years 2018 – 2020 trapping field work began in March/ April and ran on until late October or early November, stopping at the first frost.
