Russell School of Biological Sciences, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand ABSTRACT ARTICLE HISTORY We describe the history of Slipper Island (Whakahau) off Received 13 May 2017 northeastern New Zealand and report on a survey of the Accepted 19 June 2017 terrestrial fauna undertaken in December 2016. Results from this KEYWORDS survey are compared with the last comprehensive survey in Ants; birds; ecological August 1973. The terrestrial habitat of the island is predominantly management; island; kiore; farmland and has changed little in extent over the past 50 years. The Floristic Status of the Aldermen Islands Compared with Other Offshore Islands of the Auckland Province
61 THE FLORISTIC STATUS OF THE ALDERMEN ISLANDS COMPARED WITH OTHER OFFSHORE ISLANDS OF THE AUCKLAND PROVINCE by D.J. Court* SUMMARY Data shows that the Aldermen Islands possess a reduced indigenous flora compared to that of other offshore islands. The Aldermen have few weeds, but these are more significant because of the reduced flora. A list of adventive weed species is given showing those most frequently found on offshore islands of the Auckland Province. DISCUSSION To obtain any valid comparison of island floras it is necessary to take into account the following influencing factors: (a) Distance from the mainland. (b) Direction of prevailing winds. (c) History of any modification of the vegetation. (d) Area suitable and available for development of "coastal forest". Data for 10 islands or small groups of islands (including the Aldermen Islands) has been collated. Only those islands of the Auckland Province between 70 and 200 hectares in area have been included (Table 1). Large islands such as Mayor, Little Barrier and Hen Island have therefore been excluded from this study. Small rock stacks, such as Old Man Rock and Sail Rock (Atkinson, 1962, 1972) are also excluded. The apparently low proportion of adventive weed species on the Aldermen Islands prompted a comparison based on numbers of weed species in relation to distance offshore (Figs 1 and 2), i.e. were there fewer weed species on islands a greater distance offshore? This was found to be so to a slight extent only, as Cuvier and Burgess Islands have been thoroughly disturbed by grazing stock. All the islands considered have been burned over to a greater or lesser extent by the Maori, except West Island of the Three Kings Group. -

COLEOPTERA FROM GREAT BARRIER ISLAND AND MAYOR ISLAND By J. C. WATT GREAT BARRIER ISLAND FAMILY ELATERIDAE (Click beedes) During the Field Club camp of mid-November 1954, SUB-FAMILY ELATERINAE sixty-tw'o species and sub-species were collected, chiefly * Corymbites olivascens Wh. One specimen from Hebe, by 'beating' flowering shrubs over a ground sheet; bark, Mt H.; one specimen from Manuka, Pt F. rotten logs and leafmould were not examined. Collecting C. agriotoides Sh. One specimen from Hebe, Mt H. Was confined to Port Fitzroy, the western side of Mt ? C. canaliculutus Br. One specimen on ground, Pt F. Hobson, Okiwi and Whangapoua Beach. These areas Lomemus pilicornis Sh. Five specimens from Hebe, Mt H. may be divided into four main types of habitat: Betarmonoides gracilipes Sh. One specimen, as above. (1) Manuka scrubland at Port Fitzroy and Okiwi and FAMILY TENEBRIONIDAE Kanuka forest at Port Fitzroy. (2) Sandhills at Whangapoua Beach. SUB-FAMILY HELAEINAE (3) Coastal Taraire forest at the north end of Whanga• * Cilibe humeralis Bates. One specimen under rock, poua Beach. Whang. (4) Regenerating Kauri forest on Mt Hobson. SUB-FAMILY TENEBRIONINAE * Lorelus pubescens Br. Three specimens from base of SPECIES LIST: fallen Nikau sheath, one specimen from Hebe, Mt H. September Waiheke High School 2017 Term 3 Week 28 Newsletter Kia ora kotou The school has had a busy time with our students being involved with the Aims Games, UNISS Netball and Senior Girls’ Soccer tournament. The Year 13 group have been busy applying for courses for next year which include Business, Business Man- agement, Engineering, Sport and Recreation, Health Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Environmental Science and Sustainability, Armed Forces (Navy and Army), Event Management and Tourism, Architecture and Physio- therapy. Of a cohort of 54 students, 31 students are intending to go on to do tertiary study next year at Auck- land University, AUT, Victoria, Otago or Canterbury. Ten further students are taking a GAP year and some of these will work in 2018 to afford further education or to save up and travel. Three students are intending to join the Armed Forces (Army and Navy) and a further 5 students are intending to look for apprenticeships in Build- ing & Construction and Primary Industries and the remainder will work full time and one may possibly study overseas. Recently I have spoken to several parents about their concerns about a published article from an Auckland based magazine and how it reflected badly on Waiheke High School. Waiheke High School has a responsive curriculum that fits well with the intended pathways of all students. Last year our results for NCEA were again very good and our participation based overall results for Waiheke High School NCEA 2016 were: Level 1 = 93.5%, Level 2 = 94.5%, Level 3 88.0% and UE = 51.1%. -

Council Agenda - 26-08-20 Page 99 Project Number: 2-69411.00 Hauraki Rail Trail Enhancement Strategy • Identify and develop local township recreational loop opportunities to encourage short trips and wider regional loop routes for longer excursions. • Promote facilities that will make the Trail more comfortable for a range of users (e.g. rest areas, lookout points able to accommodate stops without blocking the trail, shelters that provide protection from the elements, drinking water sources); • Develop rest area, picnic and other leisure facilities to help the Trail achieve its full potential in terms of environmental, economic, and public health benefits; • Promote the design of physical elements that give the network and each of the five Sections a distinct identity through context sensitive design; • Utilise sculptural art, digital platforms, interpretive signage and planting to reflect each section’s own specific visual identity; • Develop a design suite of coordinated physical elements, materials, finishes and colours that are compatible with the surrounding landscape context; • Ensure physical design elements and objects relate to one another and the scale of their setting; • Ensure amenity areas co-locate a set of facilities (such as toilets and seats and shelters), interpretive information, and signage; • Consider the placement of emergency collection points (e.g. by helicopter or vehicle) and identify these for users and emergency services; and • Ensure design elements are simple, timeless, easily replicated, and minimise visual clutter. The design of signage and furniture should be standardised and installed as a consistent design suite across the Trail network. Small design modifications and tweaks can be made to the suite for each Section using unique graphics on signage, different colours, patterns and motifs that identifies the unique character for individual Sections along the Trail.
