As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG’s and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame. As co-writer of (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and In The Midnight Hour, Cropper is in line for immortality. Born on October 21, 1941 on a farm near Dora, Missouri, Steve Cropper moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. In Missouri he had been exposed to a wealth of country music and little else. In his adopted home, his thirsty ears amply drank of the fountain of Gospel, R & B and nascent Rock and Roll that thundered over the airwaves of both black and white Memphis radio. Bit by the music bug, Cropper acquired his first mail order guitar at the age of 14. Personal guitar heroes included Tal Farlow, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Chet Atkins, Lowman Pauling of the Five Royales and Billy Butler of the Bill Doggett band.

Live from the Artists Den #207 “Booker T. and the Drive-By Truckers” Recorded April 23, 2009, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, LA Booker T. Jones is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame keyboardist for Booker T. & the MG’s, which played on dozens of R&B classics for Stax Records. He released his first solo album in two decades in April 2009 – Potato Hole , featuring Neil Young and southern rockers the Drive- By Truckers (one of the most respected musical acts today – both as an independent group and as a backing band), which The New York Times hailed as “more pithy and forceful than ever.” Of Bettye LaVette , The New York Times said, “Classic soul singing doesn’t get any better.” The 19 th -century Patrick F. Taylor Library at The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, University of New Orleans, is currently closed to the public while being restored to its original grandeur. But its doors were opened to a select few on a warm April night for a concert as unique as the setting: Booker T. and the Drive-by Truckers with special guest Bettye LaVette. Under the sculpted oak beams of the library’s vaulted ceiling, rich soul music kept the crowd on its feet late into the night. Song List *All songs feature the Drive-By Truckers “Green Onions” with Booker T. “Potato Hole” with Booker T. “I Still Want to Be Your Baby (Take Me Like I Am)” with Bettye LaVette “Jealousy” with Bettye LaVette “I Guess We Shouldn’t Talk About That Now” with Bettye LaVette “Pound It Out” with Booker T.

  • Testimony of Booker T. Jones Recording Artist, Songwriter
Testimony of Booker T. Jones Recording Artist, Songwriter, Producer on "Music Policy Issues: A Perspective from Those Who Make It" before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary January 26, 2018 Chairman Goodlatte, Ranking Member Nadler, and members of the committee. Thank you for allowing me to testify before you today, along with my esteemed fellow creators and my friend Neil Portnow. My name is Booker T. Jones and I’m an artist, songwriter and producer who has worked professionally in music for nearly 60 years. That seems like a long time, and on some days it certainly feels that way. But many aspects of our music laws date back to an even earlier time – literally from the player piano era. So I am gratified that this Committee is making the effort to update music licensing laws for the 21st century. In my career, I’ve been privileged to record some of the most iconic R&B and Soul records that defined the genre, working with artists like Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Sam & Dave, and of course my own band Booker T. & the MG’s, which included legendary guitarist Steve Cropper. Our instrumental single “Green Onions” was one of the biggest hits of 1962. It received a GRAMMY Hall of Fame Award in 1999 and was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2012. That track has been called “iconic,” “ground-breaking,” even, “classic.” But some music services have a less dignified name for it: “Pre-72.” That’s right, because of a quirk in the law, many of our most timeless treasures, including “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay,” “Soul Man,” and “Time Is Tight,” are dismissed and disrespected as not meriting compensation to the featured artists, non-featured artists, and producers.

  • Great Instrumental
I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). I also listened to my Dad’s 78s, and my favorite song of those was Raymond Scott’s Powerhouse from 1937 (which was often heard in Warner Bros. cartoons). and to records that my friends had, and that their parents had - artists such as: (This is not meant to be a complete or definitive list of the music of these artists, or a definitive list of instrumental artists – rather it is just a list of many of the instrumental songs I heard and loved when I was growing up - therefore this list just goes up to the early 1970s): Floyd Cramer (Last Date and On the Rebound and Let’s Go and Hot Pepper and Flip Flop & Bob and The First Hurt and Fancy Pants and Shrum and All Keyed Up and San Antonio Rose and [These Are] The Young Years and What’d I Say and Java and How High the Moon), The Ventures (Walk Don't Run and Walk Don’t Run ‘64 and Perfidia and Ram-Bunk-Shush and Diamond Head and The Cruel Sea and Hawaii Five-O and Oh Pretty Woman and Go and Pedal Pusher and Tall Cool One and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue), Booker T.

  • Masters Thesis
Hammond Technique and Methods: Music Written for the Hammond Organ JESSE WHITELEY A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2013 © JESSE WHITELEY, 2013 Abstract The following thesis is made up of four original compositions written between February and September of 2012, with emphasis on the Hammond Organ in the context of jazz and rhythm and blues ensembles. The pieces of music were designed to feature the organ as the lead instrument in order to highlight various playing techniques that are specific to the Hammond Organ within these genres. In addition to my own music and an explanation and analysis of my work, the writing will provide a historical overview of organists I have chosen to highlight as influences to provide a framework for each piece of music. In order to aid this discussion of what has been an under-theorized instrument and performance tradition, I have sought out active contemporary organists to discuss their creative practices on the Hammond, as well as their insight into the notable organists of the past. Finally, of particular interest to me in this thesis is the emphasis on the Hammond Organ as an electric instrument, and the unique musical textures that are possible through the exploitation of the multiple controls that are integral to the instrument's construction. An audio recording of each piece accompanies the scores that are included. ii Acknowledgements A big thanks to my supervisor Rob Bowman for being the perfect person to work on this project with, for his good advice, resources, and above all - enthusiasm, which has charged me up in the writing of this, multiple times.
