    Journal of Jewish Languages 8 (2020) 5–6 brill.com/jjl Contact between Textual Hebrew/Aramaic and Diaspora Jewish Languages: Introduction to the Thematic Special Issue of the Journal of Jewish Languages Sarah Bunin Benor and Ofra Tirosh-Becker Co-Editors-in-Chief, Journal of Jewish Languages When we started this journal eight years ago, we envisioned that it would feature articles on many Jewish languages, written by scholars around the world. Indeed, issues 1–7 included articles on 17 different Jewish languages, as well as a few articles about multiple languages. The authors of these arti- cles reside in 12 countries: 63% in Israel, 19% in the US, 17% in Europe, and 1% in East Asia. This thematic issue continues this diverse orientation with articles by scholars around the world about Jewish English, Judeo-Italian, Judeo-Spanish, and Yiddish, as well as one comparative analysis of Yiddish and Judezmo (Judeo-Spanish). In addition, this issue includes a review essay about Judeo-Arabic and a review of a dictionary of the Hebrew-Aramaic component of multiple Jewish languages. Another aspiration of ours was that the Journal of Jewish Languages would further our understanding of phenomena that many Jewish languages share. Previous articles have explored the influence of Jewish languages on Modern Hebrew, especially in our thematic double issue edited by Edit Doron, z”l, entitled “Language Contact and the Development of Modern Hebrew” (3.1–2 (2015): 3–348). The current double issue explores the influence of Hebrew and Aramaic on Jewish languages, a phenomenon common in most Jewish communities throughout history.

    Historical Memory and History in the Memoirs of Iraqi Jews* Mark R. Cohen Memoirs, History, and Historical Memory Following their departure en masse from their homeland in the middle years of the twentieth century, Jews from Iraq produced a small library of memoirs, in English, French, Hebrew, and Arabic. These works reveal much about the place of Arab Jews in that Muslim society, their role in public life, their relations with Muslims, their involvement in Arab culture, the crises that led to their departure from a country in which they had lived for centuries, and, finally, their life in the lands of their dispersion. The memoirs are complemented by some documentary films. The written sources have aroused the interest of historians and scholars of literature, though not much attention has been paid to them as artifacts of historical memory.1 That is the subject of the present essay. Goldstein-Sabbah The Levant of the early twentieth century was a place of rapid political, social, and cultural transformation. This era ushered in a new, for lack of a more precise term, “modern” era for the region characterized, in part, by a burgeoning middle class and an increase in intercommunal dialogue that resulted from new forms of public space.1 The dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the combining of three former Ottoman provinces—Baghdad, Basra, and Mosul— into a new Iraqi state led to numerous challenges in unifying an ethnically and religiously diverse population and caused decades of political instability. However the British mandate and early years of the Iraqi state are also viewed as a time of religious pluralism and an attempt to build an inclusive secular state2 with the city of Baghdad as its political, cultural, and economic center. In Baghdad, as in many other Middle Eastern cities, the modern era meant the creation of new public spaces, such as chambers of commerce, modern companies, hotels, and cinemas to name a few examples.3 One type of area not often associated with public space are schools run under the auspices of religious communities. However, in Baghdad, schools run by religious authori- ties were a key factor in forging the new national identity; they often served as public spaces and as public symbols for religious communities to demonstrate their belonging to the nation. In Baghdad the first modern schools teaching secular subjects were estab- lished under the authority of religious communities.

    Tightrope Walkers: Jacqueline Shohet Kahanoff and Naïm Kattan as “Translated Men” Danielle Drori The Brooklyn Institute for Social Research abstract: This article examines essays and memoirs by two multilingual writers, Jacqueline Shohet Kahanoff and Naïm Kattan, who relied on different forms of trans- lation to build their literary careers during the second half of the twentieth century. It analyzes their biographical works from the perspective of “world literature studies” and the ties between literary translation, decolonization, and nation formation. Drawing on Pascale Casanova’s concept of “translated men,” the article compares Kahanoff’s and Kattan’s cases to argue that their linguistic choices reflected their political ambiv- alences, yet have never barred their readers, editors, and translators from seeing them as “belonging” to specific canons. on translated men ranslation can be as effective in effacing cultural difference as it can be in bridg- ing it. As scholars from various fields have shown, different forms of translation played a meaningful role in the long and multifaceted history of colonialism, imperialism, and Tmodern nationalism.1 In some cases, enterprises of textual exchange complemented, or simply followed, the colonization and annexation of peoples and geographical areas.     Psalms 119 & the Hebrew Aleph Bet - Part 19 The nineteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is called “Qof” (pronounced kof) and has the sound of “k” or “q” as in “queen”. It appears in the following three forms: Writing the Letter: Qof This letter looks like the English “P”, except that the curved part doesn’t connect with the stem. The aleph bet is what modern Hebrew calls the alphabet (22 letters that Yahweh used to speak the universe into existence). But Biblically, Aleph Tav are the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each individual letter is called an Oat. Oat = sign. It is saying something (giving a Spiritual Message). Qof is the letter which symbolizes the Bride of Christ. It signifies that which is made holy and is set apart for holy use. “It is written, Be ye HOLY, for I AM HOLY,” 1 Peter 1:16. “Holy, Holy, Holy, is Yahweh of hosts, Who was and Is, and is to come!” (Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8). Qof is the first letter of the word Qodesh, meaning, “HOLINESS.” “Worship Yahweh in the beauty of HOLINESS,” Psalm 29:2. “For Yahweh hath chosen Zion; He hath desired it for His habitation. This is My Rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it. I will abundantly bless her provision: I will satisfy her poor with bread. I will also clothe her priests with Salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy,” Psalm 132:13-16.     Lost Homelands, Imaginary Returns – The Exilic Literature Of Iranian And Iraqi Jews Ella Shohat – Ills.: Joseph Sassoon Semah When I first contemplated my participation in the“Moments of Silence” conference, I wondered to what extent the question of the Arab Jew /Middle Eastern Jew merits a discussion in the context of the Iran- Iraq War. After all, the war took place in an era when the majority of Jews had already departed from both countries, and it would seem of little relevance to their displaced lives. Yet, apart from the war’s direct impact on the lives of some Jews, a number of texts have engaged the war, addressing it from within the authors’ exilic geographies where the war was hardly visible. And, precisely because these texts were written in contexts of official silencing of the Iran-Iraq War, their engagement of the war is quite striking. For displaced authors in the United States, France, and Israel, the Iran-Iraq War became a kind of a return vehicle to lost homelands, allowing them to vicariously be part of the events of a simultaneously intimate and distant geography. Thus, despite their physical absence from Iraq and Iran, authors such as Nissim Rejwan, Sami Michael, Shimon Ballas, and Roya Hakakian actively participate in the multilingual spaces of Iranian and Iraqi exilic literature. Here I will focus on the textual role of war in the representation of multi-faceted identities, themselves shaped by the historical aftermath of wars, encapsulated in memoirs and novels about Iraq and Iran, and written in languages that document new stops and passages in the authors’ itineraries of belonging.

He is an innocent who goes through his own awakening as he cannot hold onto the conviction behind the play on home, family, and connection that his family emphasizes as The Dove Flyer try to hold onto their homeland and the home of seventy generations of his family. Gad as Kabi gives a very strong performance as Kabi searches for answers and guidance along the way.
