[email protected] 2 Abstract. The author reflects on his scientific and professional career as it developed over 40 years. Partly as an autobiographical sketch, he describes three phases, each guided by a specific paradigm: individual differences, narrative, and dialogical. Looking back at the different phases, the author emphasizes the non-linear nature of his development in which the preceding phases continued in the next ones resulting in complex combinations of old and new elements. Key words: dialogical self, self-confrontation, valuation theory, traits, psychotherapy. 3 One of the fascinating consequences of looking back at one’s career is the discovery of regularities that were not or could not be seen during earlier periods of development. I made my career in psychology, starting my university study in 1960 at the University of Nijmegen and finished it, at least formally, as professor emeritus at the same university in 2002. Looking back, I notice several conspicuous moments or periods in which I felt a strong uneasiness (“Unbehagen” as the Germans would call it) with my own work in psychology. This periodic dissatisfaction did not refer so much to the specific content or quality of my work, but rather to its underlying paradigmatic assumptions.
