Many youngsters across India have been pursuing performing arts out of the passion to continue our Ctraditions. But unfortunately, the support they receive from the Government, Corporate and public bodies is negligible. Nothing comes for free in the world and a lot of them have been cutting corners and spending their time and money in pursuit of performing arts with no aid. Learning the art form and performing it requires money. Makeup, costumes, accessories, travelling and other miscellaneous things related to performing arts are expensive. Yet, they don't give up and push themselves forward for the good of continuing the tradition. It has been taking a toll on them. When you compare a performing artiste to a sportsperson, the latter has sponsorships from various corporate companies, public sector and even the Government bodies. Many of the sports personnel end up with a job thanks to the sports quota. But it is not the same with artistes, despite their many sacrifices. A lot of families who root for Indian art and culture have been financially struggling and some stories have been heartbreaking. Who will come to their rescue? Who will give them employment? Who will address Cultural Unemployment? The Government? The Public Sector? Corporate Companies? The art fraternity has been waiting for an answer. Jai Hind! The Exhibition was based on the unique collection of proscribed literature in its possession. Each new person, educated, city-bred, global, is trying to infuse new energy and light into this form. Many have succeeded tremendously (as in the case of Malavika Sarukkai) in giving it a new dimension, while others (Alarmel Valli) have retained its classical roots and gone back in time to bring back gems of bygone era (Sangam poetry, etc.). Some have used group works (Leela Samson) to create anew and some have gone beyond the solo structure and infused it with group dynamics (B. Bhanumati). What we see are not new banis but new bodies and groups being created. Bani / बानी is now a reference point. Only few retain and guard it without alloying or diluting. While each one comes with certain historical reference point called bani/training, they have all tried to create anew. Partly due to demands of each season and what new work each capable star dancer can present and partly because of sponsors clamoring for new wine in old bottles or vice versa! But Bharatanatyam remains quintessentially the same. Its structure can be marginally changed but form is same. Bent at knee 1 legs are bent at knee legs because that’s what the style’s structure demands (called araimandi / अरैमंडी). One may make the fan of costume longer so one has to sit less! But the basic position still remains that else it can’t qualify to be called Bharatanatyam.

ELANGOVAN Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government have any plan to increase the cultural Centres abroad from the present 14; (b) if so, the details thereof; (c) the details of their role in the promotion of India`s cultural Heritage; (d) the details of the programmes conducted last year by the ICCR within and outside India and the scholars/artists who visited abroad during the last three years till dated; and (e) the details of the future events on anvil and the tentative itinerary of such events that will promote and propagate Indian Heritage abroad? Answer MINISTER OF STATE FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS (SHRI AJIT KUMAR PANJA) (a) Yes Sir, (b) The Government has decided to open a Cultural Centre in Washington (USA). There are in addition several other proposals from various Indian Missions abroad which are currently under examination. (c) The activities of the 14 Indian Cultural Centres currently in existence reflects the needs of the local population. Their activities include the organisation of talks, lectures, exhibitions of visual arts, essay competitions, performances of dance & music, staging of plays, screening of Indian films, publication of news bulletins etc. Additionally, in most of the Cultural Centres classes in various aspects of Indian culture such as music, dance, Hindi language and yoga are being conducted. The Centres also maintain libraries, reading rooms and audio-video facilities for visitors. Apart from organising their own activities, the Indian Cultural Centres provide support to the respective Indian Missions for coordinating various cultural activities.T hese Centres develop and maintain contacts with local citizens particularly students, teachers, academicians, opinion makers and cultural personalities to project a holistic picture of India`s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
