Preface Interest in the work of Mikhail Bakhtin among Western scholars has been particularly and increasingly evident since the 1980s. His ideas about dialogism have been and continue to be a source of inspiration for various approaches across scientific fields because they are versatile, multidimensional and open. Bakhtin’s original concepts have widened both theoretical and empirical approaches in a wide range of scientific fields. These include most notably anthropology, art, education, economy, gender studies, history, linguistics, literature, medicine, technology, pedagogy, philosophy, political science, psychoanalysis, psychology, rhetoric, religion, semiotics, sociology, speech pathology, and theatre. This conference focused on the core of Bakhtin’s theory, which concerns dialogue and dialogicality. The conference themes reflected his notion that the “I” and the “self”, the “you” and the “other” are embedded in each other so that each affects the other and as a whole they create a centrifugal force around which communication and life circle. -

Without a doubt, Cobra is Zorn’s most popular and well-known composition and one that has enjoyed remarkable success and innumerable performances all over the world since its premiere in late 1984 at the New York City club, Roulette. Some noteworthy performances of Cobra include those played by a group of jazz journalists and critics, an all-women performance, and a hip-hop ver- sion as well!1 At the same time, Cobra is routinely played by students in colleges and universities all over the world, ensuring that the work will continue to grow and evolve in the years to come. -

MARK’S MUSIC NOTES FOR DECEMBER 2011… The Black Keys follow up their excellent 2010 album Brothers with the upbeat El Camino, another great album that commercial radio will probably ignore just like it did with Brothers. In a day and age where CD sales are on the decline, record labels continue to re-issue classic titles with proven track records in new incarnations that include unreleased material, re-mastered sound, and often lavish box sets. Though not yet included in Music Notes, Pink Floyd and Queen both had their entire catalogs re-vamped this year, and they sound great. Jethro Tull’s classic Aqualung album has been expanded, re-mixed and re-mastered with the level of care and quality that should be the standard for all re-issues. The Rolling Stones have already released expanded remasters and box sets on Exile On Main Street and Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out, and now their top selling album, Some Girls has received the same treatment. Be Bop Deluxe is a 1970’s band that most readers will be unfamiliar with. They never had any mainstream success in the U.S., but the band had several great albums, and their entire studio catalog has recently been remastered and compiled into a concise box set. The Black Keys – El Camino Vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and Drummer Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, have said that they have been listening to a lot of Rolling Stones lately, and they set out to record a more direct rock and roll album than their last album, Brothers was. -

Open Systems in Dialogue OPEN SYSTEMS 2005 Festival for avant-garde music, performance and sound art 17 - 20 November 2005 · Bochum I Dortmund I Essen I Herne New approaches, new goals, extension of the artistic space: From 17 – 20 November 2005 interdisciplinary integration of musical encounters will set the tone in the German cities Bochum, Dortmund, Essen and Herne. OPEN SYSTEMS, the festival for avant-garde music, performance and sound art in Germany’s Ruhr-area, promotes encounters between artists from different fields with the aim of developing and realizing ideas in a creative environment. Amongst the highlights of the fifteen concerts are performances by ARTO LINDSAY, the ARDITTI QUARTET, the pioneers of net music THE HUB, Tortoise guitarist JEFF PARKER, as well as world premières of works by the blind composer MOONDOG. Dance performances, video installations, lectures, the club lounge and a school project round off the programme. OPEN SYSTEMS stands for stylistic enrichment as well as exciting musical encounters. Collaboration with NOVEMBER MUSIC, the Belgian-Dutch festival for currently happening music, which contributes to five of the concerts on the programme, the Luxemburg Society for Contemporary Music (LGNM) and the WDR Studio Acoustic Art will intensify international networking of artists. The sounds of ideas forming , Volume 3 Alan Dunn, 22 July 2020 presents precious but not precious UP-RE-CYCLING This is the recycle tip at Clatterbridge. In February 2020, we’re dropping off some stuff when Brigitte shouts “if you get to the plastic section sharpish, someone’s throwing out a pile of records.” I leg it round and within seconds, eyes and brain honed from years in dank backrooms and charity shops, I smell good stuff. I lean inside, grabbing a pile of vinyl and sticking it up my top. There’s compilations with Blondie, Boomtown Rats and Devo and a couple of odd 2001: A Space Odyssey and Close Encounters soundtracks. This story is about vinyl but not as a precious and passive hands-off medium but about using it to generate and form ideas, abusing it to paginate a digital sketchbook and continuing to be astonished by its magic. We re-enter the story, the story of the sounds of ideas forming, after the COVER (VERSIONS) exhibition in collaboration with Aidan Winterburn that brings together the ideas from July 2018 – December 2019. Staged at Leeds Beckett University, it presents the greatest hits of the first 18 months and some extracts from that first text that Aidan responds to (https://tinyurl.com/y4tza6jq), with me in turn responding back, via some ‘OUR PRICE’ style stickers with quotes/stats. For the exhibition, the mock-up sleeves fabricated by Tom Rodgers look stunning, turning the digital detournements into believable double-sided artefacts. -

Through these explorations, the band has created what Journal Wired called "a genre of music unto itself, eclectically derivative in a bold way and spectacularly innovative in the old-fashioned sense of genuine originality." Guitarist/composer Mike Johnson's music combines lyricism with intense and sophisticated rhythmic and harmonic ideas. The band grew out of the basement recording experiments of Johnson and bassist/drummer Bob Drake in the early eighties. In 1982 they formed an ensemble for live performance. They released their first LP, "..a thinking plague," in 1984 on their own Endemic label. They produced and engineered the record themselves, and used minimal funds borrowed from friends or scraped together amongst themselves to press it. Each album cover was hand painted by Bob Drake. Intent on making more powerful recordings and dissatisfied with the chemistry of that first lineup, Johnson and Drake disbanded the group. They began recording new songs and began working with a singer/songwriter named Suzanne Lewis. In 1987 their second album, "Moonsongs," was released by Dead Man's Curve in London. The record was described as "stunning" by Option. In early 1989 reed player Mark Harris joined the group, making clarinet, saxes and flute permanent features of the sound.
