In order to accommodate the subsequently higher demand for food and related strain on resources, careful consideration of diet choice will be essential. This research evaluates the impact on greenhouse gas emissions from three different diets: vegan, vegetarian, and meat-based. This research is important is because greenhouse gas emissions from food are estimated at around 17% of total emissions. This study measures and evaluates all the steps in the food supply chain related to food production under conditions as they exist in the United States, using the Houston, Texas area as a base for the study. -

However, little is known about the consumer preferences of meat alternatives, which will ultimately dictate their effectiveness in shifting demand away from conventional animal-based meat products. This thesis attempts to address this gap by assessing consumer preferences for four sources of protein – conventional meat, plant-based meat, cell-based meat, and chickpeas – in India, a rapidly developing country that has been consistently witnessing an increase in demand for animal-based protein. The sheer size of India’s population makes its existing and future consumption trends of global import. Using a discrete choice experiment (n = 394) that was conducted via a face-to-face survey in the city of Mumbai and analyzed by a latent class model, four heterogeneous segments in the market are identified. -

They pay for schools, parks, police and the military. But that’s not all they can do. High taxes on cigarettes have saved many lives – not only the lives of people who are discouraged from smoking as much as they would if cigarettes were cheap, but also the lives of others who spend less time passively inhaling smoke. No reasonable person would want to abolish the tax on cigarettes. Unless, perhaps, they were proposing banning cigarettes altogether – as New York City is doing with transfats served by restaurants. A tax on sodas containing sugar has also been under consideration, by Governor Paterson among others. In view of our obesity epidemic, and the extra burden it places on our health care system – not to mention the problems it causes on a crowded New York subway when your neighbor can’t fit into a single seat – it’s a reasonable proposal. But in all these moves against tobacco, transfats and sodas, we’ve been ignoring the cow in the room. That’s right, cow. We don’t eat elephants. But the reasons for a tax on beef and other meats are stronger than those for discouraging consumption of cigarettes, transfats or sugary drinks. -

The forecast recession and “long ascent” of global economic recovery after COVID-19 will require a strong commitment and decisive action from financial markets. While the global economic downturn has been a time of significant stress for all investors, the willingness of international governments to couple stimulus programs with sustainability objectives offers a clear opportunity for responsible investors to play a leading role in the recovery. Regulatory pressure will be a key driver for responsible investment practices in 2021, with significant initiatives in the European Union coming into force, and governments in Asia making strong commitments to Net Zero targets. While the term ESG is broadly accepted in responsible investment markets, the range of issues that responsible investors are called upon to consider daily continues to expand. The topics covered in this paper are framed in three broad conceptual groupings: Planetary Boundaries, Inclusion and Stewardship. ISS ESG has identified 10 of the key global trends that we believe responsible investors will be focusing on through 2021, both in terms of impacts on portfolio risk/returns, and in terms of time spent managing policies and stakeholder relationships. Section 1.3 looks at the current state, and emerging trends, in diets around the world, and Section 1.4 highlights the many historical occasions when diets have radically changed through technological innovation or deliberate intervention from government and industry. Section 1.5 acknowledges the sensitivities of this topic, and offers some reflections on how we might navigate public and political consent. We don’t have all the answers here but give a series of recommendations for building public support and developing effective policy. -

Narrative analysis moves the focus from individual meanings towards the larger, societal narratives and in turn how these narratives influence people’s lives. Articles were analysed using the concept of small stories, based on previous work by Michael Bamberg. -

However, data are scarce regarding the effects of nationwide meat reduction campaigns. We described and analyzed the correlates of a national campaign in France (called “Green Monday”, GM) promoting the weekly substitution of meat and fish by other nutrients. Two cross-sectional online surveys were compared: a National Comparison sample (NC) of the French general population and a self-selected sample of participants who registered for the Green Monday campaign. A follow-up study was carried out in the GM sample, in which participants were asked during 15 weeks whether or not they had substituted meat and fish. There were 2005 participants aged 18–95 (47.7% females) in the NC sample and 24,507 participants aged 18–95 (77.5% females) in the GM sample. One month after the beginning of the campaign, 51.2% of the respondents reported they had heard about Green Monday in the NC sample, and 10.5% indicated they had already started to apply Green Monday. -

SCHNEIDER* Agricultural law can be defined as the study of the network of laws and policies that apply to the production, marketing, and sale of agricultural products, i.e., the food we eat, the natural fibers we wear, and increasingly, the bio-fuels that run our vehicles.1 American agricultural policy has evolved from its early focus on agricultural development and expansion to its current focus on economic and political support for the agricultural sector.2 Agricultural law as a dis- cipline has tracked this policy, with agricultural law scholars debating the origins and the validity of the special treatment of agriculture under the law. This article reviews these debates and calls for a reconsideration of agricultural law and policy to address the unique aspects of agricultural production, the fragility of the environment, and the fundamental need for healthy food. -

Unhealthy Developing World Food Markets May 2013 Problem Statement and Key Messages Low income populations (i.e., those living on $2-13 USD/day) in developing countries are disproportionally vulnerable to what is affordable, accessible and aspirational, and are increasingly incorporating available “unhealthy foods” (high in fat, sugar, salt, and calories with little nutritional value) into their diets. While changing food markets may bring potential benefits including improved food safety, security, and product diversity, overconsumption of these unhealthy foods leads to a burden of health and financial impacts, including obesity, hypertension, diabetes, loss of productivity and absenteeism for these low income individuals, their families and the broader societies in which they live.
