DOUBLING OVER 50 BOARDS Illinois State's season and career double-doubles: ISU outrebounded Youngstown State, 50-29, (Nov. 29) marking ISU's first 50- performance since PLAYER 2014-15 CAREER collecting 50 rebounds against Bradley on Jan. 30, 2010. The Redbirds now rank second in the Missouri DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell 1 1 Valley Conference with a +6.6 rebounding margin. Deontae Hawkins 1 1 Reggie Lynch 1 1 HAWKINS NAMED MVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK THE DUNK TANK For the second-consecutive week, the Illinois State men's basketball team earned the Missouri Valley Dunks thrown down by Illinois State players: Conference Newcomer of the Week accolade, with Redbird freshman forward Deontae Hawkins receiving Reggie Lynch 10 the honor, as announced by the league office Dec. 1. Hawkins averaged a double-double, scoring 12.5 DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell 6 points and a team-best 10.0 rebounds per game against Seton Hall (Nov. 24) and Youngstown State (Nov. MiKyle McIntosh 4 29). The Dayton, Ohio native netted a career-best 18 points, while grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds for Deontae Hawkins 1 the game's only double-double in the Redbirds' overtime victory over YSU. It marked the first time since John Jones 1 2012 that a Redbird collected 15 or more rebounds. Daishon Knight 1 HUNTER HITS HIGH THE SUPER SUBS The first players off the Illinois State bench: Senior guard Bobby Hunter earned a career-high 23 points off the bench while netting a career-best MiKyle McIntosh 6 seven field goals on 7-for-14 (50 percent) shooting against BIG EAST foe Seton Hall in the championship Bobby Hunter 3 game of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam (Nov. 24) before scoring 20 points against Youngstown John Jones 2 State. He also scored a career-high four three-pointers while shooting 4-for-7 (57.1 percent) from beyond Justin McCloud 1 the arc. Hunter made 5-of-6 free throws, dished out three assists and grabbed two rebounds in a season- Will Ransom 1 high 30 minutes. Tony Wills 1 RUNNERS-UP IN PARADISE After falling behind by as many as 21 points, Illinois State fought back to pull within four, but Seton Hall held on for an 84-80 victory in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam championship game (Nov. 24). The Redbirds finished as the runners-up in the eight-team field, and junior guard DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 15.3 points and 5.0 rebounds during the Redbirds' three tournament games. ISU's trip to the Caribbean was a homecoming of sorts for Akoon-Purcell whose father, Paul, grew up in St. Thomas before eventually moving to the U.S.

AKOON-PURCELL NETS NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK After scoring double figures in each of his first three games as a Redbird, Illinois State junior guard DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league office Nov. 24. Akoon-Purcell averaged a team best 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals to lead ISU to a 2-0 record while making his first two career-starts in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. He went on to start and reach double-figures again against Seton Hall (Nov. 24), Youngstown State (Nov. 29) and VCU (Dec. 2).

GETTING DEFENSIVE Illinois State's success against Old Dominion (Nov. 23) can be largely attributed to the Redbirds' defensive effort. ISU held a Monarch squad which had been averaging 69.7 points per game to just 45 points, marking the first time since Jan. 5, 2014, that the Redbirds held their opponent below 50 points. ISU forced seven steals, plus two blocks and 13 turnovers, as Illinois State limited Old Dominion to 34 percent shooting from the field, 10-percentage points below average.

100 FOR LYNCH Sophomore center Reggie Lynch’s block of Richard Ross’ shot at the 11:44 mark of the ISU versus Old Dominion game (Nov. 23) was Lynch's 100th career-block. He became just the eighth Redbird to ever record 100 or more blocks. As a freshman last season, Lynch was the most efficient shot-blocker in the nation. He played 20.3 minutes per game but averaged 5.6 blocks per 40 minutes. Lynch’s 96 total blocks last season not only led the league but also set the Missouri Valley Conference freshman single-season blocks record, previously established by Creighton's Benoit Benjamin in 1982-83. RETURNING EXPERIENCE Four starters and six letter-winners return for the 2014-15 Illinois State men’s basketball team which boasts a substantial increase in experience compared to last year’s squad. Whereas the 2013-14 Redbirds (the least-experienced team in the nation) returned just 8.0 percent of their scoring and 9.4 percent of their rebounding, the 2014-15 team returns 67.6 percent of its scoring and 66.2 percent of its rebounding.

GAINING HEIGHT Not only are the 2014-15 Redbirds more experienced, but they’re also taller. Whereas the average height in 2013-14 was 6-foot-3, the average height in 2014-15 has increased an entire inch to 6-foot-4. The Redbirds, who were often forced to play with a four-guard lineup last season, have added three forwards to their active roster. MiKyle McIntosh, Deontae Hawkins and Will Ransom join returning big-men John Jones and Reggie Lynch, while New Mexico transfer forward Nick Banyard will miss the upcoming season. Walk-on James Stawarz also adds size as a 6-foot-8 center.

PICKED FIFTH The Illinois State men's basketball team received 287 points and was projected to finish fifth – with one first place vote – in the 2014-15 Missouri Valley Conference standings according to the league's preseason poll, as compiled from votes by MVC sports information directors, media and coaches. This is the fourth time that Illinois State has been picked to finish fifth in the Valley preseason poll, with the other three fifth-place selections occurring in 1988-89, 1990-91 and 2007-08. Since the MVC Preseason Poll began in 1985-86, the Redbirds have surpassed their preseason ranking in the final MVC standings 12 times.
