CU Connections Issue: October 13, 2011 Published on CU Connections (https://connections.cu.edu) Researchers question national quality measure for childhood asthma[1] Researchers studying the first national quality measure for hospitalized children found that no matter how strictly a health care institution followed the criteria, it had no actual impact on patient outcomes. The scientists examined 30 hospitals with 37,267 children admitted for asthma from 2008 to 2010 and discovered that the quality of discharge planning made no difference to the rate of return to the hospital for another asthma attack in seven, 30 or 90 days. “Our research concluded that there is no relationship between compliance with this measure and readmission rates for asthma patients,” said study co-author Marion Sills, M.D., MPH and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine[2]. The findings are published in the Oct. 5 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Asthma is the leading cause of admissions in children’s hospitals. To help provide the best care, the Joint Commission, a nonprofit that accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations programs nationwide, adopted three core process measures for evaluating how hospitals treat childhood asthma. The Children’s Asthma Care (CAC) measures include giving asthma relievers upon admission, providing systemic corticosteroids and creating a home management plan of care when they are discharged. Hospitals’ compliance with the first two measures was high and did not vary enough for researchers to study the impact on outcomes. By studying hospitals’ compliance with the third measure – devising a home health management plan – researchers concluded that it had no effect on hospital readmissions or return emergency department visits for asthma. -

Maybe you've come across an inspirational spot for an outdoor lunch break, or an intriguing exhibit you wouldn't have known about if you hadn't stumbled upon it. Maybe it's advice on the best time of day to find a parking spot, or the name of an unsung barista who makes getting a cup of coffee truly entertaining. CU Connections Issue: April 4, 2013 Published on CU Connections (https://connections.cu.edu) Five questions for Susan Szpyrka[1] [2] It wasn’t part of any university strategic plan, but more of an organic effort, with experts from all parts of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs community coming together to increase food options on campus while turning dining ventures into economic and educational opportunities. Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Susan Szpyrka’s responsibilities cover a variety of areas, including food services and the Office of Sustainability. Her goal is to help develop strategies that will take the institution from the place it occupies today to where it needs to be in 2020 to accommodate student growth, remain attractive to students, and provide support and services to faculty who are delivering the core mission: education and research opportunities. In 2008, Szpyrka, with the help of a team of university members and student input, began an effort to refurbish an underused and underperforming social and food-service area. The plans soon snowballed to involve other dining areas, a greenhouse for fresh produce, and future projects that include a new coffee house. Recently, Szpyrka served as executive producer for a movie, “Fooducation: A Revolution of Food & Eating at UCCS” to draw attention to the way the university grows, serves and manages food. Video of Y3-eghuHW2Q 1. How did the “revolution” begin? We had an area that was a game room with four pool tables, a snack shop that looked like a concession stand and some games. It was a lot of space that the students weren’t using, and, as a food service establishment, it was not pulling its weight financially.
