With increasing frequency, news reports seem to show that tension and misunderstanding between world religions is mushrooming out of control. People of various faiths can't seem to live side by side peacefully. Here in the United States, pop singer Madonna touts Kabbalah, a spiritual movement rooted in Jewish mysticism. Actor Richard Gere espouses Zen Buddhism and has declared himself a disciple of the Dalai Lama. Our own neighborhoods are full of religious diversity. But does that mean we all "get along?" And do we truly understand the differences between Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism? In his book, The Religions Next Door, Dr. Marvin Olasky provides insights into the beliefs of four growing religions in America and educate readers about the danger of believing that all religions hold different variations of the same tenets. Olasky is often called the father of compassionate conservatism and was an informal advisor to George W. Bush during his presidential campaign.

Before we let Monsignor Albacete introduce our guests, we would like to explain very briefly what motivated us to organize tonight's discussion. Obviously, nowadays there is no lack of debate about the presidential elections. As should be expected, much of this debate focuses on the most current developments regarding the candidates, their policy proposals, shifts in the electorate, political alliances etc. All these are very interesting topics, of course, and are abundantly covered by the media. We felt, however, that it might be interesting to take a step back and try to ask some more general questions that are less frequently discussed, perhaps because they are harder to bring into focus and because they require more systematic reflection than is allowed by the regular news cycle. Given that politics is an important form of cultural expression, we would like to ask: What does the 2008 campaign say, if anything, about our culture? What do the candidates reveal, if anything, about our collective self-awareness and the way it is changing? Another way to ask essentially the same question is: What are the ideals that move people in America in 2008? Historically, great political movements have cultural and philosophical roots that go much deeper than politics in a strict sense.

MARVIN OLASKY Dr. Olasky earned an A.B. from Yale University in 1971 and a Ph.D. in American Culture from the University of Michigan in 1976. He is the author of 18 books, including The Tragedy of American Compassion, which Philanthropy magazine called one of “eight books that changed America.” He is currently editor-in-chief of World magazine and holder of the Distinguished Chair in Journalism and Public Policy at Patrick Henry College. He has been a foster parent, a PTA president, a cross-country bicycle rider, a newspaper reporter, an informal advisor to George W. Bush, and a Little League assistant coach. He has also been married for 35 years, has four sons, and is an elder of the Presbyterian Church in America. In this short interview, Dr. Olasky expands on ideas of welfare, compassion and community, which will be the subject of his talk on March 9. Etymology is useful here: "Compassion" comes from "com" (with) and "pati" (suffering). A person who is compassionate to another suffers with that person: Compassion is far more than passing out a check, which government can do well, or feeling sorry for a person. Compassion requires spending lots of time with those in need. Individual government employees can be compassionate, but many government social workers acknowledge that rules and time pressure makes them treat people more as numbers than individual human beings.

    ABSTRACT GETTING HISTORY RIGHT: CONSERVATISM AND THE POWER OF THE PAST IN THE LONG CULTURE WARS (1992-2010) by Adam Bruno This paper explores the power of history in the rhetoric of conservative politicians, historians and media figures during the Long American Culture Wars (1992-2010). Throughout these years, the content of historical rhetoric remained generally consistent and emphasized four essential ideas: the 1960s as a moment of national declension, a national history of neoliberalism, the Christian tradition in America, and general opposition to multiculturalism. Throughout these 18 years, conservative rhetoric grew progressively more hostile in three distinct sub-eras, “The Contract With America” era (1992-2000), the “With Us or Against Us” era (2002-2006), and the “Tea Party” era (2007-2010). The rhetoric of conservative figures demonstrated this paper’s central argument – that history was an essential tool for conservative elites to defend their policies and values, while simultaneously attacking those of their liberal opponents. Christians, Chair Professor Robert McChesney Professor John Nerone Assistant Professor Jonathan Ebel ii ABSTRACT The Spirit of Networks examines the implications of new media for the future of American religious politics. I argue that we are at a critical juncture in both media and religion, similar to the early days of radio broadcasting. The outcome of that earlier juncture involved an increase in media commercialization and the proliferation of conservative evangelical broadcasters—developments which paved the way for the emergence of the Religious Right. Today, technological and generational shifts have the potential to alter the course of American religious politics. Younger people are more wary of political partisanship and religious hypocrisy, and are more likely to use new technologies as tools of political engagement. These shifts have led some journalists and researchers to pronounce the death of the Religious Right and the emergence of a new Religious Left. The research presented here assesses the potential outcome of this critical juncture by examining the impact of new media technologies on public discourse at the intersection of religion and politics. Through qualitative analysis of newspaper articles, cable news transcripts, and blog commentaries, I demonstrate how new media tend to generate debates about the authenticity and sincerity of public figures.
