OUR CORE VALUES Respect, Compassion, Justice, Excellence, Stewardship Dear Friend of Providence, Every year we feel blessed to have your support and commitment, and 2013 was no exception. Because of your generosity and dedication, Providence in Oregon took many important steps forward in our ongoing journey of providing excellent, compassionate service to our patients and communities. We hope you enjoy and are inspired by the stories in this annual report – all of which you helped make possible. Whether it’s a nursing center resident enjoying greater mobility, a mother who knows her child is well cared for while she receives medical treatment, family members who feel blessed knowing their loved one is receiving excellent care near the end of life, a father whose sudden stroke is quickly assessed and treated close to home, or a young woman who faces breast cancer with new hope and possibility … all of these stories, and many more, exist because you care. “Thank you” seems inadequate, but it is heartfelt. Providence literally couldn’t be Providence without your faith, enthusiasm, support, talents and energy. Thank you wholeheartedly on behalf of all those we serve. The center’s spiritual care team includes Father Aelred Yockey, two chaplains and many volunteers. Father Aelred, who travels from Mt. Angel Abbey to say Mass six days a week, offers sacraments to residents who can’t attend Mass. He also prays with, consoles and sings individually to them. We can provide this service because of the generosity of Felix and Maryellen Dilger. Each year earnings from the Felix and Maryellen Dilger Pastoral Care Endowment offset the cost of having a priest working at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center. ■ Buying specialized equipment Donors play a significant role in helping residents heal at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center by helping buy equipment that the center couldn’t otherwise afford. Donors helped purchase a walking jacket that, when attached to a ceiling lift, allows wheelchair-bound patients to stand up and walk. Other purchases include a wheelchair designed to fit the specific needs of patients and residents. This gives them more freedom of movement, allows better participation in their rehabilitation, and provides mobility for eating meals in the dining room and attending activities. ■ Providing a fresh new look and feel Father Aelred Yockey, a member of Providence Benedictine The nursing center has a new and greatly refreshed look, thanks to a five-month, Nursing Center’s spiritual care team, prays with resident Edith Kapka. $1.5 million renovation. The work included new floors, paint, signage and assorted minor remodeling. Foundation donors paid for renovations to a shower room, dining room floor, chapel, kitchen floor and nursing station. The nursing station remodel transformed one unit’s common area into a more usable, comfortable and accessible area for staff, residents and their families. Many studies show that interaction with nature helps patients heal faster with less need for pain medications and less depression. One patient said, “I was devastated when I learned I would need to go from the hospital to a nursing home, but your garden has saved my life. I don’t know what I would do without it.” Resident Josephine Bielenberg and Ethan Emch, from Providence Benedictine’s Child Development Center, help release ladybugs in the Providence Benedictine therapy garden.
