Scott Sosebee, Committee Member Dr. Dianne Dentice, Committee Member Dr. Richard Berry, D.M.A. Dean of the Graduate School ABSTRACT More than 2.7 million Americans served in the military during the Vietnam era and roughly 40,000 of them as helicopter pilots in Vietnam, yet scholars are still trying to understand the Vietnam experience. There is little doubt that the war played an influential role in the lives of that generation. Yet, many Vietnam veterans refrained from talking about their service, making it difficult to study and understand their experiences within the existing historical narrative. Using the life history of Warrant Officer James Scott, Hayley Hasik argues that Vietnam veterans—particularly helicopter pilots—are an underrepresented group that, through oral history, can provide an alternative narrative to enhance our understanding of the war and its aftereffects. Gathering primary sources and understanding how the individual fits—as an individual—into the larger historical narrative provides Vietnam veterans with a “voice” and helps give validity and meaning to the abstract. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS As any graduate student can attest, the completion of a thesis or capstone project involves countless hours of research, writing, and editing, as well as a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. The following pages contain the history of a man who started as a mere acquaintance and overtime became a friend. That is what countless hours of interviews and questions can do. This project started nearly four years ago and, although extensively documented within these pages, it hardly feels complete. But that is the nature of oral history—the never-ending history. A countless number of people helped make this project possible. Trump signed into law S. 305, the “Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017,” which declared March 29, National Vietnam War Veterans Day. This act passed nearly fifty-three years after the Gulf of Tonkin “incident,” forty-nine years after the Tet Offensive, forty-four years after United States troops withdrew from Vietnam, and forty-two years after the fall of Saigon. Yet, this particular law does nothing more than “encourage the display of the flag of the United States on National Vietnam War Veterans Day.”1 No discussions about the war and its aftermath are to take place. No efforts are made to seek out veterans so as to understand better their experiences and thoughts about the war that, for many

This w as preparation for constructing a character which we would work on perform ing for the following three sessions. At the final class we did a one hour Zen walk across the theatre stage. For the first half-hour of the walk we shed all our acquired gender characteristics; for t he second half we took on our character's gender traits. The only constraint on selecting a character was that it be som e version of the opposite gender.

This primer of new queer classics includes more than two dozen LGBT-themed features and short films, including important early works by directors Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant, and Gregg Araki, and experimental filmmakers Peggy Ahwesh, Luther Price, and Isaac Julien. New Queer Cinema was first named and defined 20 years ago in a brief but influential article in Sight & Sound by critic B. Ruby Rich, who noted a confluence of gay-oriented films among the most acclaimed entries in the Sundance, Toronto, and New Directors/New Films festivals of 1991 and 1992. Rich called it ―Homo Pomo,‖ a self-aware style defined by ―appropriation and pastiche, irony, as well as a reworking of history with social constructionism very much in mind . irreverent, energetic, alternately minimalist and excessive.‖ The most prominent of the films Rich catalogued were Tom Kalin’s Leopold and Loeb story Swoon (the subject of a 20th anniversary BAMcinématek tribute on September 13) and Haynes’ Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Poison (1991—Oct 12), an unpolished but complex triptych of unrelated, stylistically diverse, Jean Genet-inspired stories.

Boyle, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Debra Moddelmog, Advisor Professor John Hellmann Advisor Professor Linda Mizejewski Department of English ABSTRACT This dissertation argues that the Vietnam War and social movements of the time altered the way Americans conceive of masculinity, an alteration represented in some narratives of the War. Decades after the conclusion of American involvement in Vietnam, this revision of the social gender script is still evident in narratives that are not always directly concerned with the War. This new discourse of masculinities appears in narratives not only fictional, but also in memoirs, films, and recruiting advertisements, suggesting that what Lauren Berlant calls the “National Symbolic,” or the framework through which Americans constitute themselves as Americans, has adjusted along the following lines. First, the era made it imperative to imagine a plurality of masculinities, determining that a single model of masculine gender to which men should aspire might not be desirable and probably never was possible. This explains, among other things, the disenchantment repeatedly expressed by soldiers in the narratives with the John Wayne-model of masculinity displayed in so many World War II movies, and the subsequent need to devise new forms of masculinity that would suit the particularities of the Vietnam War. In pluralizing masculinity, the narratives propose that gender is performative, amorphous, and historically contingent, often concluding that masculinities may not be reserved only for males, but that females also may choose to enact masculinity.
