DEMAND No.15 POLICY NOTE 2019-2020 DEPARTMENT of ENVIRONMENT the Sustainable Management of the Environment and Natural Resources
DEMAND No.15 POLICY NOTE 2019-2020 DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT The sustainable management of the environment and natural resources is vital for economic growth and human wellbeing. When managed well, renewable natural resources, watersheds, productive landscapes and seascapes can provide the foundation for sustained inclusive growth, food security and poverty reduction. Keeping the objectives of environmental conservation and abatement of pollution, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development, the Government of Tamil Nadu is implementing various environmental schemes. Climate change have wide-ranging effects on the environment and on socio-economic and related sectors, including water resources, agriculture and food security, human health, terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity and coastal zones. Changes in rainfall pattern are likely to lead severe water shortages and flooding, melting of glaciers can cause flooding and soil erosion and rising temperatures will cause shift in crop growing seasons which affects food security and changes in the distribution of disease vectors putting more people at risk from diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. Temperature increase will severely raise the extinction rate of many habitats and species, particularly coral reefs, forest ecosystems and mountain habitats. Increasing sea levels will cause greater risk of storm surge, inundation and wave damage to coastlines and areas with low lying deltas. A rise in extreme events will have effects on health and lives as well as associated environmental and economic impacts. There are two main policy responses to climate change viz mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation addresses the root causes by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while adaptation seeks to lower the risks posed by the consequences of climatic changes. -
Need to Set up AIIMS at Perundurai in Erode District of Tamil Nadu
an> Title: Need to set up AIIMS at Perundurai in Erode district of Tamil Nadu. SHRIMATI V. SATHYABAMA (TIRUPPUR): The Union Government had announced in its last Budget that AIIMS will be established in Tamil Nadu. The former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had immediately identified 5 suitable locations in Tamil Nadu including Perundurai in Erode District. The Central team had inspected the proposed locations in April last year. But the Union Government has yet to announce the location for the establishment of AIIMS in Tamil Nadu. The Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu had already urged the Hon'ble Prime Minister to ensure establishment of AIIMS Hospital in Tamil Nadu without any delay. The IRT- Perundurai Medical College and Hospital, Perundurai is located in a lush green landscape of 327 acres which is 20 Kms west of Erode Coimbatore Highway. The existing site inspected is easily approachable as it lies on the National Highway No. 47, connecting Coimbatore, Salem and Perundurai towns and is well connected with both train and bus services which provides better accessibility for patients. The AIIMS Hospital, if constructed at Perundurai, will provide medical care to around 2 crore people not only in the western districts of Tamil Nadu but also to the poor people in the adjoining States of Kerala and Karnataka. With the rising demand for medical care, there is a huge expectation for the establishment of AIIMS like Medical and Research Institution in Perundurai to provide best medical facilities and services to the people of this Kongu region. Therefore, I urge the Union Government to expedite the announcement of setting up of AIIMS at Perundurai in Erode district in Tamil Nadu and to ensure that the construction and establishment of AIIMS is initiated without any further delay. -

KARUNAKARAN # Department of Chemistry, Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai-638 052, Tamilnadu. #Department of Chemistry, Sona College of Technology, Salem - 5, Tamilnadu. India. [email protected] Received 5 February 2007; Accepted 4 March 2007 Abstract: Ground water samples collected from different localities in and around Gobichettipalayam town, Erode District, Tamil Nadu were analyzed for their physico- chemical characteristics. This analysis result was compared with the WHO & ICMR standards of drinking water quality parameters with the following water quality parameters namely pH , Electrical conductivity, - - 2- + + CN , Cl , SO 4 , Na , K , Ca & Mg in CaCO 3 equivalents , phenolphthalein alkalinity, hydroxide alkalinity, carbonate alkalinity, bicarbonate alkalinity, total alkalinity, total dissolved solids, total solids, total suspended solids, calcium, magnesium, total hardness, dissolved oxygen, fluoride etc ., The usefulness of these parameters in predicting ground water quality characteristics were discussed. Thus an attempt has been made to find the quality of ground water in and around Gobichettipalayam town, suitable for drinking purposes or not. Keywords: Physico- chemical characteristics, Drinking water quality parameters, Ground water. Introduction The quality of ground water depends on various chemical constituents and their concentration, which are mostly derived from the geological data of the particular region. Ground water occurs in weathered portion, along the joints and fractures of the rocks. In fact, industrial waste and the municipal solid waste have emerged as one of the leading cause of pollution of surface and ground water.
