  • Idaho Air Services Study

    Idaho Air Services Study

Idaho Air Passenger Demand Study Introduction Introduction to the Report Commercial airline service is very important to Idaho’s economy. Not only do businesses located in the State rely on the commercial airline industry to support day-to-day activities, but Idaho’s tourist industry is heavily reliant on commercial airline service. There is no national standard for what constitutes good or even acceptable airline service; such standards vary considerably by community. However, convenient access to the national air transportation system is a top priority for many businesses and tourists across the U.S. It is important that Idaho’s major population, business, and tourism centers have commercial airline service to meet their needs. All areas in Idaho have some inherent need or demand for commercial airline service. The volume of this demand is determined by factors such as population, employment, income, and tourism. Where each community’s demand for commercial airline service is actually served is a more complex equation. In the deregulated airline environment, it is not uncommon to find travelers who leave the market area of their local commercial service airport to drive two to three hours to a more distant, larger competing airport. The airport that travelers choose for their commercial airline trips is influenced by a myriad of factors. With the help of the Internet, which is rapidly becoming the number one method for airline ticket purchases, travelers can compare fares, airlines, and schedules among several competing airports. With airline deregulation, some travelers from smaller commercial airport markets around the U.S. have abandoned air travel from their local airport in favor of beginning their trips from larger, more distant airports.

Informational Handout: King County International Airport-Boeing Field Seattle, Washington

Informational Handout: King County International Airport-Boeing Field Seattle, Washington Published Visual Flight Rules (VFR) routes for arrivals and departures. Project Background The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) cancelled two existing VFR routes for aircraft landing and departing King County International Airport-Boeing Field (KBFI) and replaced them with newly defined routes (retaining some of the existing names). The term “routes” can best be described in this instance as a “set of pre-coordinated instructions” that is given to VFR pilots. The routes enhance safety by increasing separation between arrival and departure flows into KBFI, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (KSEA), and Renton Municipal Airport (KRNT). Purpose of Changes There have been Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) events involving VFR aircraft arriving and departing KBFI, and these routes are intended to reduce TCAS events and enhance safety. TCAS monitors the airspace around an aircraft for other aircraft equipped with proper equipment, independent of air traffic control, and warns pilots of the presence of other properly equipped aircraft in the immediate area. Project Description The project results in a change to past operating procedures by publishing several existing routes for VFR aircraft to use when arriving and departing from either runway configuration at KBFI. KBFI Airport Traffic Control Tower (BFI ATCT) now has the ability to assign published routes rather than issuing tailored instructions. The new VFR routes provide better predictability, enhance safety, and improve the segregation of aircraft arriving and departing KBFI. What Changed The new VFR routes follow pre-existing air traffic flight tracks that are assigned by BFI ATCT and no new areas will experience new air traffic overflights.

  • IDA Currently Has 3 Scheduled Airli

IDA Currently Has 3 Scheduled Airli

General Information on Airline Service Development at the Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA) IDA currently has 3 scheduled airlines (United, Delta and Allegiant) with Direct flights to Salt Lake City, Utah; Denver, Colorado; Las Vegas, Nevada; Phoenix/Mesa Arizona and seasonal summer service to Minneapolis-St. Paul, Oakland and Los Angeles California. In addition, Air Charter companies on the field offer direct flights to Boise and other destinations on demand. The airport is a landlord for the airlines and has very little say in where airlines fly, the ticket prices they charge or the level of customer service they may or may not provide. We do stay in close contact with all the airlines, attend their conferences and meet with their headquarter offices to offer suggestions and insight into our market and to market our airport and community in effort to attract new routes. We also partner with a very competent and successful air service development consultant to assist us in this effort. However, in the end Airlines make their decisions based on profitability and they are ultimately in control. Air service is directly tied to the economy and how many people are flying. Air service is also driven by the amount of utilization of existing flights and individual airline business models. All these factors combine to reflect a continuous volatile airline industry. After safety and security, Air Service Development is a high priority for the Airport. We strive to be responsive to the community travel needs in both business and leisure routes. Our mission is to first maintain our existing airlines and routes (in the recent economy, many regional airports have lost air service).

Volunteers rolled the runway, painted the outhouse and Runup T, replaced the windsocks, and took care of other routine maintenance. Scott Snelson, the ranger for the Spotted Bear district, met the group and updated everyone on the improvements already made to the airport. He also shared some options for the future with money coming from federal funding sources. The most recent improvements were clearing trees on the approach ends of the runways and removing the road crossing at the approach end of Runway 32. The next scheduled Forest Service work session will be July 17 at Schafer Meadows. Thank you to all pilots and enthusiasts who came to help maintain this amazing resource. Pierce County Public Works and Utilities Brian J. Ziegler, P.E. 2702 South 42nd Street, Suite 201 Director Tacoma, Washington 98409-7322 [email protected] piercecountywa.org/pwu TO: Dan Roach, Chair Pierce County Council FROM: Deb Wallace, Airport and Ferry Administrator DATE: October 28, 2014 SUBJECT: Airport Security The purpose of this briefing paper is to provide an update to Council on the status of security upgrades at Pierce County's airports. Current Situation: The Pierce County Airport and Ferry division is in the process of upgrading gate access, fencing, and security lighting at both airports. In 2015 the division will implement an Airport Watch program to increase the safety and security at each facility. The improvements are being made due to incidents which have occurred at the airports over the last several years and at the request of airport tenants. Currently both airports are fenced with restricted access gates to enhance security, although there are gaps in the fencing allowing unauthorized pedestrian entry. These gaps will be addressed in early 2015. An electronic gate is being added to the north gate at Tacoma Narrows Airport (TIW) and the south gate is being outfitted with a mechanism to allow its use by those who are hearing impaired. Once that improvement is completed, 24 hour security will be implemented at TIW. Thun Field currently operates with 24 hour gate security. Prior to implementation, the airport commissions at each airport discussed airport security measures during the preceding year and staff coordinated the implementation of the security measures with airport tenants.
