The book is well produced at least in this edition which isn't sadly always the case with modern chess books. Why not a higher rating? Simply that isn't an essential or ground-breaking read for the Modern Chess Strategy student which isn't to denigrate the Modern Chess Strategy or usefulness of Pachman's achievement. Although the book was written before the advent of the computer chess age, he is able to look forward to some of the challenges that this age has thrown up. As such it is perhaps the ideal summary of Modern Chess Strategy accumulated wisdom of human chess. But as I stated Modern Chess Strategy, it takes the reader on a practical journey, with dozens of Modern Chess Strategy games played and analysed in detail for Modern Chess Strategy reader's edification. There is apparently a larger, three-volume version of the book, enriched by anecdotes from the chess world; unfortunately I bought the more compact, single-volume version, but it has no less merit for that. Finally I would like to congratulate the translator for his seamless rendering of the original text. It's one of these books that you may not fully appreciate for a very long time, till you just gave up and appreciate the book on Ludek Pachman's terms! Modern Chess Strategy just have to really really study the positions hard, and even get out your computer chess analysis tools. If you are one of those players who thinks what to move Modern Chess Strategy and I was one of them read this book and you will play chess beautifully and effortlessly. The only other Modern Chess Strategy that may rival this one is My System by Aron Nimzowitch. My System is difficult to understand. Compared to itI think Modern Chess Strategy is much simpler to read concepts are very Modern Chess Strategy and a better book as it discusses pawn structures in depth which is essential to understanding chess. I enjoy a good game of chess, but I am far from anything approaching a formally competitive player. As a strategic guide, I can certainly understand its merits. The final third discusses strategy in the larger context: As an extreme novice, these concluding chapters were far above my head. Yet my largerst complaint with what otherwise is an outstanding treatise on chess strategy was its use of descriptive notation ie. The problem with this notation being, however, is the notation is all relative to which side of the board one views the pieces — hence its disusewhich is a bit antiquated and to me, at least, difficult. This is one of the classics of chess middlegame instruction. The most important principles are all here, however. Pachman was a very strong GM in his heyday, and he covers many vital topics with authority. Concise and clearly written essays are followed by superbly annotated games from many of the greats of the early and mid-twentieth century like Nimzovich, Alekhine, Smyslov and Botvinnik. Concepts like play in the center and on the wings, Modern Chess Strategy structures, and how to play with the various pieces are are covered. The chapter on how to use your rooks is considered by some strong players to be so good that it alone is worth the price of the book. He briefly discusses the vital topic of exchanging pieces, and also dynamics lead in development, coordination of the pieces, etc. This work is fairly advanced, so I would definitely read a primer or two, some tactics books, and some basic games collections before taking it on. Descriptive notation is not hard to get used to, and getting fluent with it opens up a world of chess classics that srrategy will sadly miss if you insist on only the newer algebraic notation.
