Through her company, SPLIT BRAIN SOUND, she designs sound and audio systems for theatrical productions, ranging from independent new works in black box studios to large-scale musicals in major venues. She writes original music for film, plays, dance, and multimedia installations, with an emphasis on orchestral, electronic, and vocal scores. She teaches workshops in sound design (Paprika Festival, AMY Project) and aims to make the discipine more accessible to women, gender minorities, and other underrepresented groups. She has been featured in conversation in the Canadian Theatre Review, nominated for awards for sound design (Pauline McGibbon, Robert Merritt), and won 3rd prize for her composition for string quartet at the International Media Sound Hamburg Young Talent Competition. Choi began her artistic career as a classical violinist, having performed as a soloist, orchestral musician, and chamber musician across North America in venues such as Koerner Hall, Byng Hall at Stanford, the National Arts Centre, and the Isabel Bader Centre in Kingston. Choi graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Music with the national gold medal in violin performance, and was a multiple winner at the Canadian Music Competitions and Ontario Music Festivals. Choi studied violin with Jonathan Crow (Toronto Symphony), Tibor Vaghy (Vaghy Quartet), and Jerry Csaba (NAC Orchestra). She has participated in artist residencies at the Banff Centre, National Arts Centre, Domaine Forget, Stanford University, and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. She has taught as a guest instructor at Sistema Toronto, the Heifetz Institute in Staunton, Virginia, Shad Valley International, and McGill University. Choi collaborates frequently with other artists to create new work, including WAKE with Aria Evans (with support from the Ontario Arts Council), and LOVE YOU WRONG TIME with Maddie Bautista (with support from the Canada Council, Soulpepper, Studio 180, and fu-GEN Theatre). Deanna was a member of fu-GEN Theatre's KITCHEN Interdisciplinary Artist residency in 2018. Choi's psychological research spanned from animal models in neuroplasticity to music cognition in Alzheimer’s patients, funded by numerous National Science and Engineering Research Council grants. She published her findings in peer-reviewed journals (Neural Plasticity, Frontiers in Psychology) and presented them at regional and national conferences, including a talk at TEDxQueen’s that combined live music, storytelling, and research. Choi applies principles of auditory and cross-modal perception to her artistic designs, and seeks to further bridge perceptual psychology, behavioural neuroscience, and performance..
