Randolph Anderson Collection on the Wayne, Stites, and Anderson Family ... Biographical Information Richard Wayne (1741-1811) was a Savannah, Georgia, merchant and planter. He was born in Yorkshire, England, and moved to Charleston, South Carolina in 1759, where he married Eliza Clifford. He moved with his family to Savannah in 1789. James Moore Wayne (1790-1867), son of Richard Wayne, was a prominent lawyer in Savannah. He was Mayor of Savannah, Judge of Superior Court, Member of Congress, and President of the Georgia Historical Society for many years. In 1835, he was appointed an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, a position he held until his death. Richard Montgomery Stites (1777-1813) married Mary Wayne, daughter of Richard Wayne, 1801. Stites was born in New Jersey but moved to Savannah with his mother, Sarah Dennis Stites, who married as her second husband John Young Noel. R.M. Stites was a prominent lawyer in Savannah and one of the early captains of the Chatham Artillery. George Wayne Anderson (1796-1872) married Eliza Clifford Stites (1805-1865), daughter of R.M. Stites. He was a successful Savannah banker, serving for 40 years as President of the Planters' Bank of Savannah. He declined the position of Secretary of the Treasury under the administration President Andrew Jackson. George Wayne Anderson's son, Edward Clifford Anderson (1839-1876) was called Edward C. Anderson, Jr., to distinguish him from his uncle, Edward C. Anderson (1815-1883). E.C. Anderson, Jr. graduated from the University of Virginia in 1860 with a Bachelor's degree in Law. That same year he married Jane Margaret Randolph of Virginia, a great-granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson. E.C. Anderson, Jr. served with the Confederate Army in the Civil War, rising to the rank of Col. of the 7th Georgia Cavalry. He died in the Savannah yellow fever epidemic of 1876. Jefferson Randolph Anderson (1861-1950) was the son of Edward Clifford Anderson, Jr. He was educated at the University of Virginia and at the University of Gottingen, Germany, and graduated in 1885 with the degree of Bachelor of Laws. J. Randolph Anderson was a prominent Savannah Lawyer, served in the Georgia Senate, was chairman of the commission for erecting the Oglethorpe Monument in Savannah, President of the Georgia Historical Society, an active member of the Georgia Hussars, and participated in many other cultural, civic, and social activities in Savannah. In 1895, he married Anne Page Wilder, granddaughter of Thomas Butler King. Scope and Content Note This collection consists of papers collected by J. Randolph Anderson concerning the Wayne, Stites, and Anderson family. The papers are arranged by family surname, with a combined folio section at the end of the collection. The papers relating to the Waynes begin with the Richard Wayne and Richard Wayne, Jr. papers, 1756-1817. These consist of a sales book, papers of estates for which Richard Wayne the elder was the administrator or executor, and miscellaneous papers. Included in the Richard Wayne papers are - Page 4 - Finding Aid to the J. Randolph Anderson Collection on the Wayne, Stites, and Anderson Family ... documents concerning the Georgia Company, one of the Yazoo companies. Richard Wayne was a charter member and these are his copies. The James Moore Wayne and Richard Montgomery Stites papers, 1763-1865, consist of correspondence, personal accounts, and legal accounts. The personal papers of R.M. Stites, 1763-1820, consist of family correspondence, papers pertaining to real estate interests, personal accounts, a few plantation (Oryza) accounts, slave sales, letter books, account books, ledger, legal papers, and documents relating to societies and social clubs. Legal cases of R.M. Stites, J.M. Wayne, and other Savannah lawyers consist of hundreds of legal cases, arranged alphabetically by name of either the plaintiff or the defendant. Admiralty cases are listed at the end. The Anderson family papers include Anderson family correspondence, 1814-1957, which consists of letters between friends and family. The E.C. Anderson, Jr. papers, 1759-1887, consist of E.C.A., Jr.'s business, Civil War, and estate papers. The Jefferson Randolph Anderson papers, 1893-1960, include original speeches and writing by J.R.A., business papers, legal papers, political papers, and papers relating to the Episcopal Church. Genealogy, researched mostly by J.R.A., consists of information relating to the Andersons, the Randolphs, the Jeffersons, and other related families. Memorabilia consists of articles and clippings pertaining to J.R.A., the Anderson family, the Randolph family, and scrapbooks devoted to J.R.A.'s political career. The collection also contains oversize items that relate mostly to the Anderson family. The E.C. Anderson, Jr. Civil War papers (folio), 1862-1864, consist of documents relating to his service with the 24th Battalion of Georgia Cavalry. Confederate Bond Issues (folio), 1861-1864, consist of Confederate bonds of varied value. maps and list of town, garden, and farm lots and their grantees, City of Savannah; and J. Randolph Anderson memorabilia (folio) consist of maps and surveys of Savannah and diplomas awarded to J.R.A. The last items are eight newspapers in loose folio folders, most of which date from 1861-1862. Boxes 8-18 contain the legal cases of R.M. Stites, J.M. Wayne, and other Savannah attorneys. These legal cases are in alphabetical order. The greatest portion of them are Stites' cases. In many instances it was not possible to determine the attorney; only those names that are specified on the documents are listed, the names following the alphabetical listings. Unless otherwise specified, cases after January 15, 1813, the date of Stites' death, are attributed to Wayne. Among the other attorneys are Jeremiah Cuyler, William Davies, Charles Harris, Venobles Bond, George Woodruff, John Kell, and J.M. Berrien. Persons or companies involved in suits are listed by name of plaintiff or defendant. Some of the folders contain information on interesting facets of Savannah's history, such as George Faries for building the first Baptist Church; Joseph Hill for the contract for building a tall bridge over the Savannah River. At the end of each letter of the alphabet there is a folder in which there is only one or more papers relating to a case. Materials in the miscellaneous folders may relate to the listed cases. Admiralty cases are listed separately. Also included in the collection are visual materials, arranged in the following order: miscellaneous drawings and images found in the Anderson family papers; photos relating to J. Randolph Anderson's genealogical research concerning the Randolphs, the Stites, and the Anderson; photos of J. Randolph Anderson, including photos of him in the uniform of the 3rd Battalion, Georgia Volunteers and at the unveiling of the Oglethorpe Monument; Anderson and Randolph family photos; photo albums featuring pictures of famous Civil War figures (mostly Confederate) and unknown family members; and folio- sized photos of J. Randolph Anderson (alone and in YMCA or Episcopal Convention group shots) and the Oglethorpe Monument. - Page 5 - Finding Aid to the J. Randolph Anderson Collection on

  • 2011 Annual Report of the Georgia Historical Society Fiscal Year 2011
Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2011 Annual Report of the Georgia Historical Society Fiscal Year 2011 INTRODUCTION W. Todd Groce, PhD President and Chief Executive Officer Fiscal Year 2011 (July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011) was a banner one for the Georgia Historical Society. Due to the launch of a capital and capacity building campaign the institution enjoyed its most prosperous year in nearly 175 years of continuous operation. As evidence of this, GHS raised a record $5 million for educational programming, archival services, capital projects and endowment. The endowment continued to rebound, and at the end of the fiscal year reached $6.54 million, close to its pre-recession level. Total assets grew from $7,382,181 in FY10 to $13,476,604 at the end of FY11, an increase of 82.5 percent. This healthy bottom line was due in part to careful financial management, dynamic board leadership, a recovering stock market, and the creation of two new endowment funds: the Dr. Henry Sauls Fund, established by a gift of $25,000 from John and Laura Wallace; and the Allan Gaynor Fund, established by an initial bequest of $300,000 from Alan Gaynor, a long-time supporter of GHS. The primary reason, however, for the significant increase in the Society’s net assets was the acquisition in June 2011 of the property at 104 West Gaston Street in Savannah for development as the Jepson House Education Center. Named in honor of philanthropists and higher education champions Robert and Alice Jepson, this is the first physical expansion of the Georgia Historical Society in forty years.
