Greek Island Odyssey Holiday Report 2013 Day 1: Saturday 20th April As our plane came in to land at Rhodes airport the wildlife spotting began! We had a good view of a female Marsh Harrier and Little Egret over the nearby river. Then, on the drive to the hotel, we saw a Wood Sandpiper on the same river by the road bridge. Upon our arrival in the medieval old town Andy and Denise made a quick foray into the moat and town and found Starred Agamas, Oertzen’s Rock Lizards, a Dahl’s Whip Snake and Large Wall Brown butterflies. It was late evening by then and so we sat at a local taverna for our first traditional Greek mezedes meal and discussed plans for the week ahead over a civilized glass of wine. Day 2: Sunday 21st April After a hearty breakfast at the hotel we set off on our first Anatolian Worm Lizard full day of exploration. Our first stop was the archaeological park at Monte Smith. After parking the car and with lots of butterflies flying around us, it was hard to know just what to look at first. Andy diverted our attention, announcing that he had found an Anatolian Worm Lizard, a strange creature looking more like a worm than a lizard and which is found in Turkey and Greece. On Rhodes it is recorded only in the northern parts of the island. Lesser Fiery Copper We then moved on to watch the butterflies. The first two we identified were male and female Lesser Fiery Coppers, soon followed by Eastern Bath White, and Clouded yellow. -

Bivar de Sousa 2 Keywords: Lepidoptera, Cape Verde Islands, distribution, new data ABSTRACT Butterflies of the superfamilies Hesperioidea and Papilionoidea collected in the Cape Verde Islands and deposited in the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, Lisbon, Portugal, were studied. Some novelties are reported at the insular level and one Palearctic species of Nymphalidae is reported for the first time in the islands. The identification of the only species of Colias (Pieridae) present in the Cape Verde Islands and its biogeographical affinities are discussed. RESUMO Este artigo apresenta resultados de um estudo de amostras de lepidópteros das superfamílias Hesperioidea e Papilionoidea, provenientes de ilhas de Cabo Verde e em depósito no Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, Lisboa, Portugal. Read Full License Page 1/26 Abstract The effects of cattle grazing on biodiversity in Mediterranean woodlands are yet unknown. To assess these effects on diurnal butteries, we conducted daytime surveys in the Mt. Meron nature reserve (northern Israel) in two habitats over two different years. In each habitat we chose one site that was grazed by cattle and, as a control, a similar but ungrazed site. Belt transects (5m wide), divided for 100m replications, were surveyed ve times on ridges in 2015 (11 replications, 538 butteries, 25 species), and nine times in valleys in 2016 (12 replications, 3,944 butteries, 38 species). In both habitats, species similarity index between sites was high. Richness was higher in the ridge control and evenness was higher in the valley grazed site. In both habitats total abundance was ca. twofold higher in the control, and the abundance of woody aliated butteries was threefold higher in the control, probably due to overgrazing, which affects butteries’ breeding niches. For batha polyphagous and oligophagous buttery species, abundance was similar between the sites, and for a few of those, associated with increaser plants, it was even higher in the grazed sites. -

Dardona**, Mohammed.A.Albayoumi * * Msc Microbiology ** Msc Limnology Abstract- Butterflies and moths were studied in regions of Wadi Gaza, extending from Salahe El-deen bridge west to Wadi Abo- Qatron near Wadi Gaza village to the east. The research is based on studying the diversity of butterflies and moths in terms of taxa diversity, Genera compositions, and family abundance. In terms of family abundance, the survey showed that all recorded butterflies are belonging to five main families (Pieridae, Hesperiidae, Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae). The recorded moths are also belonging to five families (Arctiidae, Crambidae, Geometridae, Noctuidae, Sphingidae). In terms of species and genera compositions and diversity, the survey revealed that butterflies are more abundant concerning diversity and richness than moths. The five families of butterflies are consisting of (19 genera) and (25 species) while the five families of moths are consisting of only (10 genera) and (11species).The butterflies represented (69 %) of recorded species in the area of study while the moths were represented in (31 %) of the findings. The most abundant family of butterflies is Pieridae with (36%) of all recorded butterflies, followed by Lycaenidae (32%). As for moths, the abundant families are Noctuidae, Geometridae, and Crambidae were each family was represented by (3 species), and they form (82%) of recorded moths. In this study all genera, in both moths and butterflies are represented only by one specie except six genera of butterflies and one genus of moths as each one is represented with two species, these six genera of butterflies are zizeeria,Vanessa, Colias, Pieris, Carcharodus, and Pointa and that genues of moths is Stemorrhages. -

ABSTRACT The present study was conducted to survey the insect species associated with the thistle plant, Cynara sp. at El-Baida area, El-Gabal El-Akhdar, Libya during the period from September 2001 through August 2003. Obtained results revealed the presence of 27 insect species belong to 19 families and seven orders associated with Cynara sp. Order Coleoptera was represented by nine species; Agapanthia anularis L. and A. cardui L. (Family Cerambycidae), Cassida sp. and Phyllotreta sp. (Family Chrysomelidae), Coccinella septempunctata L. and C. novemnotata L. (Family Coccinellidae), Larinus sp. and Lixus sp. (Family Curculionidae) and Potosia morio F. (Family Scarabaeidae). Order Diptera was represented by two species; Acanthiophilus helianthi Rossi and Chaetorellia carthami Stack (Family Tephritidae). Order Hemiptera was represented by three species, Anthocoris sp. (Family Anthocoridae), Spilostethus pandurus Scop. (Family Lygaeidae) and Dolycoris baccarum L. (Family Pentatomidae). Order Homoptera was represented by three species, Aphis compositae Theobald and A. craccivora Koch (Family Aphididae), and Empoasca sp. (Family Cicadellidae). Order Hymenoptera was represented by three species; Andrena sp. and Apis mellifera L. (Family Apidae), and Megachile sp. (Family Megachilidae). In order to understand patterns of abundances of migratory Lepidoptera in southernmost Europe and contrast this with those of sedentary species, we studied butterflies surveyed along transects during three spring migration seasons at the Rock of Gibraltar. Overall, 2508 butterflies belonging to 19 species were recorded. Of these, the four most numerous species accounted for almost 88% of all individuals recorded. These were the migratory Clouded Yellow Colias croceus, Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta and Painted Lady Vanessa cardui, and the sedentary Common Blue Polyommatus icarus. There was a significant correlation between abundance of P. icarus and C. croceus. Furthermore, abundances of C.
