Sail Area 761 Displacement 17,500 Friendship Sloop Society We Say It In Friendship Welcome to the fifteenth annual homecoming of the Friendship Sloop PRESIDENT Society! Dr. Henry O. White (owner of Sarah Mead) The fifteenth is traditionally the crystal anniversary, and in recognition of this the Maine Legislature spent a good part of the spring debating VICE PRESIDENT Jack Cronin (owner of 1'annis) about returnable beer bottles. Our members are deeply moved. This program booklet gives you information about the sloops, the SECRETARY races, and related events. You will also find in it the names and purposes of Betty Roberts — Friendship, Maine the good folks who support our society with their paid announcements. Tell them you met them here. Be ye kind one to another! TREASURER Ernst Wiegleb (owner of Chrisxy) ASSISTANT TREASURER Carlton Simmons — Friendship. Maine HISTORIAN Carlton Simmons — Friendship, Maine HONORARY PRESIDENT Bernard MacKenzie (owner of Voyager) Commercialized? A gentleman who is perhaps correct expresses regret that sloop days have become "commercialized." Be informed, please, HONORARY MEMBERS that the Friendship Sloop Society is a non-profit corporation, and its only Howard Chapelle, Cyrus Hamlin, William Danforth, John Gould, interest in accumulating money is to swell the principal of the Beatrice Herald Jones, Albert Roberts, Betty Roberts, Lincoln Ridgeway Pendleton Memorial Scholarship Fund — to aid Friendship seniors in their educations. The Society transfers money from its working account to this fund each year. Otherwise, the only commercial projects of the Society are the gift shop which is clearly labeled as a scholarship benefit, 1975 Committees and the sale of hot peanuts. Peanut proceeds also go to the scholarship fund. Otherwise, the "commercial" aspects of Sloop Days are unofficial. This is neither to praise nor to blame, but simply to state the fact. • Historical Portsmouth Number List
Historical Portsmouth Number List The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is provided to enable clubs to allow boats of different classes to race against each other fairly. The RYA actively encourages clubs to adjust handicaps where classes are either under or over performing compared to the number being used. The Portsmouth Yardstick list combines the Portsmouth numbers with class configuration and the total number of races returned to the RYA in the annual return. This additional data has been provided to help clubs achieve the stated aims of the Portsmouth Yardstick system and make adjustments to Portsmouth Numbers where necessary. Clubs using the PN list should be aware that the list is based on the average performance of each boat across a variety of clubs and locations. The numbers in the PN list may not reflect the peak performance of each boat. Historical numbers are listed below and have been collated from the RYA's archive of PN lists. It should be remembered that the Portsmouth Yardstick number list has been through a number of changes and the numbers listed below have had conversion factors applied where needed. It should also be remembered that whilst all efforts are taken for PN's not to drift, relative performance of older boats may be quite different to modern classes. The numbers are given as a starting point to help clubs arrive at a fair number and if these numbers are used then they should be reviewed regularly. Users of the PY scheme are reminded that all Portsmouth Numbers published by the RYA should be regarded as a guide only.

Welcome Welcome to the eighth annual Friendship Sloop Days. During the spring of 1961, plans were hastily made for a race that was to be a homecoming for Friendship Sloops. Little did we realize that we were grabbing a bear by the tail. With our eighth regatta coming up shortly, we know what enthusiasm and love there is for these boats. Our first year was a one1 day, one race affair, but so many sloops travelled so many miles to join in tht. fun, it was decided in order to make it worthwhile for them to travel so far, three days should be set aside for racing. This has worked out well, and everyone seems happy with the arrangement. Thanks to a competent Race Committee, the race itself has been one of our lesser problems. Accommodating the crowds of people who want to see these boats from shore or watch them race from other boats has been quite an undertaking for a small fishing village of 800 people. Such problems as feed- ing up to 5,000 people, and parking their cars seemed insurmountable, but thanks to the veracity of "many handsJmake light work," the impossible was easily accomplished. Outdoor meals were served, banquets prepared, park- ing lots set up, a taxi service arranged,; and innumerable other facilities pro- Dedication — vided to help make things run smoothly; The aspect of all this that strikes most people first, is the fact that no individuals profit from any of this. Many of SID PRIOR : For many years our Town Committee Chairman. Sid the organizations of the town benefit, however.

JANUARY, 1972 *EM$YLVANIA the^ Keystone State's Official 2^ nglerFfSHiNG BOATiNC Single Copy Ice Fisi pne's flere Again page 6 VIEWPOINT 7* by ROBERT J. BIELO Executive Director FAREWELL In past years 1 have used the January "Viewpoint" to present a few New Year's Resolutions. This year when the January ANGLER goes to press 1 will no longer be the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fish Com mission, thus this will be my last "Viewpoint" column. Looking back briefly I recall that my early days at the Linesville Hatchery convinced me that the work of the Fish Culturist is a combination of hard physical labor, the endurance of extremes of heat and cold and a "Mother's" constant concern over the complex needs of the delicate stock being nurtured. Service as a Waterways Patrolman opened my eyes to pollution and the terrible toll untreated wastes of all kinds were taking of our price less water resources. During this period 1 also had a chance to discover that while a few folks deliberately violated the laws established to protect our fisheries resources, most people willingly observed the laws and were genuinely interested in our fish and wildlife. Later as a Fishery Biologist this interest of growing numbers of Pennsylvanians in the sound management of our natural resources became much more evident, although just ten years ago public concern of outdoors affairs was but a fraction of what it is today. Items of prime concern then involved the many actions of man leading to siltation of our streams and to the seemingly endless schemes to channel all waterways, obliterating most na tural habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms.

  • List of Friendship Sloops
DEDICATION is dedicated to the town of Friendship. His dedication to the town is what brought about the sloop races. Other men had the idea but it was Herald who brought it to fruition. None of the existing organizations or committees in the town wanted to tackle such a tremendous undertaking, so almost single-handedly, Herald set up a new organization to promote this tremendous idea. Thus the Friendship Sloop Society was born. The first year was difficult. It was not easy to solicit help because people thought it couldn't be done. With great determination and dedica- tion, Herald set to work, writing letters and news releases; setting up committees and organizing work groups; arranging for parking and police DEDICATION — help — a million and one things to be done, and Herald saw to it Herald Jones — without whom this whole thing would they were done and done well. never have started. \ more appropriate word would be difficult to find!
