Competitors are required to be clear from the shore 10 minutes before the start of their event. — Gun and Flag "H" 6. The Class Flag (5 minutes prior to the start) brings competitors into 2.45: 14 ft. Dinghy Prep. Signal — Start Herons the Starter’s hand and subject to the rules. 7. Yachts manoeuvering before the start are required to do so to leeward — Gun and Flag "U" of the starting line and to avoid interference with yachts about to start, or 2.50: 14 ft. Dinghy Start — Gun yachts on course. STARTING LINE Between 2 white buoys moored out from the Starter’s Stand. The position is subject to alteration for different breeze directions. N.B.— All classes must pass outside the Starting Line on second laps while other classes are starting. FINISHING LINE All races will finish between two white buoys in line with the Starter’s Stand.

COURSES Course 1: (International , International 5-0-5, 12 sq. metre ) — YELLOW. Start: 1 red — 3 red — 7 red — 1 red — 3 red — 7 red — 1 red — 3 red — 7 red — Finish. All marks to starboard. Distance: Approximately 9.4 miles. Course 2: (International Finn, Gwen 12, Vee Jay and 14 ft. Dinghy) — WHITE. Start: 1 red (starboard) — 5 yellow (port) — 2 yellow (port) — 8 yellow (port) — 5 yellow (port) — 2 yellow (port) — 7 red (starboard) — Finish. Distance: Approximately 7.8 miles. Course 3: (Heron and Moth) — BLUE. Start: 1 red — 3 red — 7 red — 1 red — 3 red — 7 red — Finish. All marks to starboard. Distance: Approximately 6.3 miles. REVERSE COURSE On display of Code Flag “R ,” the course will be sailed in complete reverse.

HANDICAPS All classes will start on flying starts; handicaps will be adjusted and results will be announced after completion of the events. CONTROL The decision of the Regatta Committee on all matters concerning the conduct of the racing will be final. RESPONSIBILITY All participants of this Regatta do so at their own risk and responsibility. All owners and skippers are expected to have the craft and gear in seaworthy condition. DECLARATION All skippers who have raced in accordance with the prescribed rules and regulations must sign a Rule Compliance Declaration within 1 H O U R of finishing each race at the Club-house. DISTRESS Competing skippers are reminded that it is their duty to attend another crew in distress, whether in the same race or otherwise, if a rescue launch is not in the vicinity, or able to render assistance. Rules - The races shall be sailed under the current rules of the TT y TR.U. as modified by the R.Y.A. except as modified herein.

Identification - Each yacht shall carry the appropriate numbering and identification of its class clearly visible on its sails. Divisions - The racing on Saturday and Sunday morning will be started in three divisions as follows: ' i (a) 16 ft. (nominal) and over;

(b) over 111 6" and under 16 ft. nominal; (c) 11' 6 ” and under. Should the skipper of any boat wish to race outside its division he may do so on application to the racing committee. The Sunday afternoon race will be for the combined fleet from a handicap start.

Starting Times - The starting times for the individual races shall be:

Saturday 8.3.63 - (Scratch start) Division (c) 2.05 p.m. (b) 2.10 p.m.

(a) 2.15 p.m. Sunday 9.3*63 - (Scratch start) Division (c) 10.30 a.m.

(b) 10.35 a.m. (a) 10.40 a.m. Combined fleet handicap start

Afternoon race - 1.0 p.m. Handicaps - The handicaps for Saturday and Sunday morning races will be decided by the Sailing Committee.

The Sunday afternoon handicaps will be based on the first two races. 6. Starting Procedure (a) Scratch Baces

(i) A preparatory signal "P" will be hoisted and the course number shown 10 minutes prior to the start of the first division. (ii) Five minutes, before the start of each division, the flag for that division will be hoisted.

(iii)The fall of that division flag will signal the start of that division. (b) Handicap Races

(i) The preparatory signal "P" will be hoisted and the course number shown 10 minutes, prior to the start of the limit boat.

(ii) Five minutes before the start of the limit boat, the number of minutes to the start of the scratch boat will be shown on a board and the flag "P" will be dropped.

(iii) The numbers on the board will be changed each minute. The number shown on the board will indicate the handicap of the boats who are within 1 minute of starting. The dropping of the board and change of the number will indicate the start"of the boats on the handicap last shown on the board. (iv) Boats will be called by loud hailer 1 minute before their start. This call will coincide with the raising of the handicap number on the board for these boats.

Attention to the hoisting and lowering of signals will be given by the firing of a gun.

7• Starting lone - The starting line•will be shown on the Club House Notice Board 1 hour before each race. 8. Recalls - Recalls will be by loud hailer.

9. Courses - The course shall be in the form of an equilateral triangle of approximately 3 miles per lap.

Course A will be sailed in a clockwise direction.

Course B " " " " an anti-clockwise direction. The buoys can clearly be seen from the hill behind the Club House. There are no promlnant landmarks for identification, but the buoys can be located at approximately 60° and 120° from the Club House. The outer two buoys will be 44 gallon drums painted red. The Club House buoy will the international yellow and red code flag 0.

10. Finishing line - The finishing line shall "be between course buoy with the code flag 0 and the Club House flagpole. 11. Time limit - The time limit for each race shall Toe 3 hours from the start of that individual race. 12. Shortening: of Course - Should it become apparent_after 2-4 hours that the course cannot be completed in time the committee may shorten any or all of the courses.

1 3 . Postponement and Abandonment - Postponement of 15 minutes will be signalled by answering pennant (Red and White Vertical Stripe). Cancellation by code letter N (Blue & White checkered).

14 . Starting Instructions - Will be posted in the Club House at 10.0 a.m. each race day. 15. Protests - Protests are to be made in accordance with R.Y.A. Rule '68""and lodged within 2 hours of completion of the race with the Regatta Committee. The protest must be accompanied by a fee of ten shillings (10/-) which, should the Committee consider the protest frivolous, will be forfeited. A protest flag must be flown in the main rigging at the earliest opportunity, and flown until the finish of the race. The Regatta Committee wishes to stress the necessity for an_ honourable and sportmanslike observance of the racing^rules which require a yacht involved in an incident either to retire from the race, or protest, should he consider he was in the right. Protests will be heard at the earliest convenience following the expiration of the time limit for lodging protests. Those concerned will be advised of the time and place by the Chairman of the Protest Committee. 16. Safety - As the water may be cold and the expanse of the lake Targe all competitors are required to wear safety jackets.

If in trouble stay with your boat. Competing skippers are reminded that it is their duty to attend another crew in distress whether in the same race or otherwise if the rescue launch is not in the vicinity or is unable to assist. 17. Flags Used -

A limited number of billets may be available for any visitors who have failed to arrange accommodation. 5. Provisions

The Ladies Committee will have steak, bread, tea, coffee, soft drinks, etc., available in their tent. Their specialties for barbecue cooking are - Breakfast - 2 sausages 2 eggs roll 4/- (with coffee) Lunqh ) steak and roll 4/- ) - tomato 6d. Dinner ) egg 6d. (with coffee) Cooked frankfurts and rolls will be available between times at 1/6a. each.

The nearest petrol point is at Collector, which is nearly 5 miles towards Goulbum. 8. Parking

Boarts shall be clear of the beach 10 minutes before their individual start. Starting Line - The starting line will be makred with two yellow buoys up to 200 yards from the first rounding ( if possible in a downwind position from the first mark). These will be moored near the starters raft or boat.

Starting Procedure

(a) The preparatory signal UP" will be hoisted TEN minutes prior to the first race. (b) Five minutes before the stf’.rt of each class the class flag, four pennants £nd the class course will be displayed.

(c) The starting pennants shall be dropped at 1 minute intervals and the fall of the class flag shall indicate the start of the race. -2-

(d) Attention will be drawn to the' ten minute wa A ' n g , and the start of eadh race by the firing of a gun. Except in the case of a recall the starting gun of each race shall be the 5 minute waring gun of each subsequent race.

(6) Recalls - Should any part of a yacht be across the starting line when the signal is given she must return and restart to the satisfaction of the starter. The method of individual recalls shall be by single gun shotand loud hailer.

In the event of mass recall two gun shots and loud hailer will be used.

(7) Courses - The courses to be sailed will be signaled from the starter. The letter of the course to be sailed will be shown on a board.

In the event of the shortening being signalled yachts shall finish between the committee boat and a yellow mark dropped on course crossing in the direction from the last rounding mark. Shortening of course shall be signalled by letter HS” and gun fire and close flag, (11) Postponement or Abandonment

« Owing to the lack of water in Lake Burley Griffin, the Regatta will be held at Lake G-oerge. This is on the east side of the main Sydney - Canberra road about 23 miles from Canberra. There will be a notice on the gate.

DEPTH OF WATER

A shallow rocky patch by the shore just north of the Clubhouse is shown on the sketch plan.

Depths in the middle of the lake do not exceed 10 to 12 feet. There

is therefor-e risk to masts of any boats capsizing.

RULES

The races will be sailed under the current Rules of the Yachting

Association of New South Vales, except a.s modified by these instructions.

Between the mast of the Committee vessel and a buoy bearing a Red flag.

A buoy bearing a Yellow flag will be moored near the Committee vessel. In

crossing the line to start and sailing toy/ards the first mark boats may not pass between this buoy and the Committee vessel; this mark is not part of the

starting line,

STARTING PROCEDURE

Warning Signal. A Red and ¥hite chequered flag will be displayed on

the Committee vessel and a gun fired ten minutes before the start of

the first race. The course letter applicable will be displayed on a

board,

race number will be displayed on a board and a gun will be fired.

Three minutes before the start of each race three flags will be

hoisted. These will be lowered in turn at one minute intervals.

and a fresh preparatory signal will be made at the recall signal.

FINISHING LINE

Between the buoy nearest the Clubhouse bearing the flag applicable to the

course and the flag pole opposite the Clubhouse.

SHORTENING COURSE

A decision to shorten the course will be signalled by flying the code

flag ’S’ (blue square on white background) on the flag pole opposite the

Clubhouse and firing a gun when the first boat affected is approaching the

finishing line. Thereafter all boats shall complete that lap and cross the finishing line.

TIME LIMIT

The time limit will be three hours from the starting signal for that

race. No race will count unless the course or shortened course is

completed by the leading boat of the class within the above time. PROTESTS

Protests must be lodged in accordance with Rule 68 with the Officer of

the Day within one hour of the finish of the protesting boat. A fee of

10/- must accompany the protest.

PRIZEGIVING

Prizes will be presented at the Lake George Clubhouse as soon as

possible after the conclusion of the racing on Sunday, 8th March.

RIGGING AND PARKING AREA

Competitors are asked to obey the instructions of the marshals on where

they may rig their boats and park their cars and trailers. Boats may be

left overnight in this area, but the Club can take no responsibility for

their safety,

HEALTH

Competitors are warned that Lake George water should not be drunk and

that if they have any open wounds they should be careful not to allow Lake

George water to get on them. If it does, the wound should be immediately

dressed with iodine. A supply of this and other First Aid equipment can

be obtained from one of the race officials. V

NOTICE OF RACE

OPENING OF LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN - 17th and 18th OCTOBER, 1964

In conjunction with tha ooening ceremony of Lake Burley Griffin on 17th October, 1964, at which the Prime Minister, Sir Robert G. Menzies, will officiate, the Canberra Yacht Club and the Y.M.C.A. Sailing Club will hold an opening of the season regatta.

The regatta will be under the control of the Lake Burley Griffin Joint Sailing Committee.

Entries are invited from boats of the following classes which are registered with the appropriate Association -

International 505 Y«W. Heron International OK Dinghy 14 Foot National Moth Sea Fly National Gwen Twelve Open Class

Classes in which less than 8 entries are received may be included in the open class.

The races will be conducted under the racing rules of the Yachting Association of as modified by the sailing instructions.

The regatta programme will be -

Saturday, 17th October -

2.00 p.m. - sail past in central basin 2.55 p.m. - demonstration races of 1 or 2 laps by each class 8.00 p.m. - informal get together in CYC club h o u s e

Sunday, 18th October -

11.00 a.m. - class racing on west lake 3.00 p.m. - presentation of trophies at CYC club house

Entrance fee will be 5/- per boat for S u n d a y racing.

Trophies will be awarded as follows -

Saturday - token trophies only Sunday - First - trophy to value of £10 per 12 starters and <£6 for 8 starters. Placings - from entry fees Perpetual trophies (2) - to the value (with pennants). of £40 each will be offered by N.C.D.C. for annual competi­ tion by visiting and local clubs on a points basis.

Background

A ceremony for the inauguration of Lake Burley Griffin by the Prime Minister of Australia will be held at Regatta Point in the Central Basin at 2,15 p.m„ Saturday 17th, Racing will commence off Regatta Point at approximately 2.55 p»m.

To avoid haphazzard entry of competitors into the area and to provide a background to the inauguration ceremony it has been decided to enter Central Basin in the form of a sail past.

Sail Past

Time: 2,0 p 0m«, Starting Point: At Committee Boat West Basin, Warning: Signaled by red and white check flag 10 minutes before start. Preparatory: The class flag of the first class will be signalled 5 minutes before the start of the sail past. Start: By loud hailer.

The order of Classes will be - Finn O.K. Moth Gwen 12 Sea Fly 14 ft. Y.W. Heron General (Open) (Open) 505

The flag for the H»r4?t class to start will be broken out with the starting of the preceding class.

Boats will start at 15 second intervals in the order required by the group leader.

It should be appreciated that this is not a race and some endeavour should be made to keep station.

Course: Start at Committee Boat, through centre span of Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, to Buoy A to starboard then disperse towards Kings Avenue Bridge. A general dispersal over the whole of central basin is desired.

General: There will be a distinguished gathering at Regatta Point and the sailing will be in the public eye as well as on news reel and television. Your co-operation by boing in V/est Basin at 1.50 p.m. within hailing distance of the Committee Boat so that you may proceed to Central Basin in your class would be greatly appreciated. Racing instructions, courses and programmes will be available from CYC Clubhouse from 10.00 a.m. on Friday, 16th October.

Canberra Yachtsmen are requested to obtain these on Friday.

Visiting Yachtsmen other than Herons and Seaflys should report to CYC Clubhouse on arrival. Heron and Seafly skippers will receive sailing instructions at launching site. Launching Sites -

6, Starting Procedure

(i) Warning Signal. A red and white checked flag (Code u) will be displayed on the Committee Vessel and gun fired 10 minutes before start of first race. The course number applicable will be displayed on a board.

Note: The gun on Saturday will be fired from Regatta Point and will coincide with the Prime Minister declaring the Lake open. The time could vary slightly either way from the scheduled 2,45 p.m, (ii) Preparatory Signal. Five minutes before the start of each race the class flag will be broken out and a gun fired. This and all subsequent signals will begin from the Committee Boat;

There will be no handicaps for the Saturday demonstra­ tion races. Token trophies will be awarded to winners. SUNDAY RACES - 505, Finn and Heron Classes will be Scratch races.

Other classes will have handicaps. Handicap if not shown on the programme will be established on a secret lap result. 7

TROPHIES -

In addition to Class Trophies the National Capital Development Commission have presented two trophies for perpetual competition? one for visiting clubs, one for local clubs.

Points will be awarded to Clubs on results, start and finish, of all boats in all classes; the Sunday races only to count. CANBERRA YACHT CLUB RACE INSTRUCTIONS - 1965/66 RULES. Races will be sailed under the current rules of the Yacht­ ing Association of New South Wales, except as modified by these instructions. The above rules shall apply between all boats racing or intending to race from the Warning Signal for the first race until the boat has finished her race and cleared the finish— Ing line or has retired.

STARTING LINE. The starting line is the extension of a line through two posts on the point west of Lotus Bay. Two marks will be placed at the outer and inner limits of this line and boats must pass between these two marks. These two marks are not part of the starting line. KEEPING CLEAR OF THE LINE. Boats intending to compete in any race while not actually engaged in starting shall keep clear of both the starting line and of all competitors who are about to start or who have started. STARTING PROCEDURE' ■

All starts will be scratch starts, except where stated in this programme. Warning Signal. Ten minutes before the start of the first race code flag U will be broken out on the mast on shore near the start­ ing line and a gun fired. The course letter applicable will be displayed on a board.

Preparatory Signal. Five minutes before the beginning of each race the class flag will be broken out and a gun fired. Start. The class flag will be lowered and a gun fired. Simultan­ eously the class flag of the next race will be broken out for which it will serve as the preparatory signal. Recall. Rpcalls will be indicated by the firing of a gun followed by loud hailer. Recall numbers will correspond with competitors' sail numbers.

General Recall. The firing of two guns together with the flying of the first substitute. In the event of a general recall there will be no subsequent warning signal and the new preparatory signal will be the first substitute. All following starts will be delayed five minutes.

FINISHING LINE. The finishing line will be the same as the start­ ing line. It will be crossed in the opposite direction from the starting line.

SHORTENING COURSES. Shortening courses shall be indicated by the display of numerals. These numerals will not be in the form of flags, but will be painted on boards and the appropriate number will be hung on the sea wall close to the finishing line. Nu­ meral 1 shall be displayed if the race is to be ended after one lap. Numerical 11 shall be displayed if the race is to be ended after two laps. POSTPONEMENT. Answering Pendant means "the scheduled time of the start of all races is postponed fifteen minutes". This post­ ponement can be extended indefinitely at fifteen minute intervals by dipping and re-hoisting the signal. CANCELLATION OR ABANDONMENT. The flying of code flag N signifies 'thaT”aIF races are cancell ed or abandoned. -2- TIME LIMIT. The time limit shall be three hours from the start­ ing signal for that race. No race will count unless the course, or shortened course, is completed by the leading boat of that olass within that time.

PROTESTS. These must be lodged in accordance with rule 6R with the Officer of the Day within one hour of the finish of the protesting boat. A fee of 10/— must accompany the protest. DECLARATIONS. A declaration under Rule 14 is not required. CLASS RACES

Handicaps will be allotted initially by the Class Association, Handicaps will be adjusted automatically according to the results of the races. Any owner who wishes to hove his handicap revised may apply in writing, with the support of another helmsman in his class, by 6 p.m. on 1st November, 1st January and 1st March respectively.

Handicaps will be in even minutes. Handicaps will be reduced by three minutes for a win, two minutes for a second place and one minute for third place. If a scratch boat receives a place that boat remains scratch but all other handicaps of boats which started in that race are increased accordingly, ENTRIES. A fee of 2/6 will be charged for each race and must be paid in advance. Alternatively, a seasonal fee of 30/- may be paid at the beginning of the season for all races other than special races or regattas, but before each race competitors must inform the Officer of the Day that he proposes to start. *'■ *

-3- FOIHTS. Points will be awarded on the following basis; 1 point for starting 1 " " finishing 8 " " first place 7 " " second place 6 " " third place and so on until - 1 point for eighth. No points for lower places, other than for starting and finishing. -Points are allotted to boats irrespective of owner or helmsman. BUOYANCY

Owners are reminded of the need to ensure that their buoyancy is effective. REGATTA INFORMATION SHEET.

Canberra Yacht Club welcomes all competitors and visitors to its 3rd Canberra Day Regatta, the first such Regatta to be held on Lake Barley Griffin. We wish you pleasant sailing and a happy week-end. 2. Launching Sites; Sufficient space is available for all boats to rig in the environments of Lotus Bay. To assist launching, however, competitors are asked to remove cars and trailers well away from the beaches. 3. The rigging areas in Lotus Bay have been zoned as follows:

West Beach (adjacent to starting position) International Flying Dutchman, National Gwen 12, Seafly, General Division. Central Beach International 505? International Finn, International O.K. Dinghy. East Beach National Moth, Yachting World Heron.

4. Other rigging areas are available at Acton and Yarralumla Bay and local competitors may prefer to use these areas. 5. Facilities: Snacks and refreshments will be available at the Clubhouse, also dinner on Saturday evening. 6. Temporary toilet facilities will be located at Lotus Bay between West and Central Beaches. 7. Entertainment: An informal dance and social evening will be held at the Clubhouse on Saturday evening. 6 • Starting Procedure (i) Warning Signal. Code Flag U (red and white check) will be displayed on the Committee Vessel and gun fired 10 minutes before start of the first race; the course letter applicable will be displayed on a board.

(ij-) Preparatory Signal. Five minutes before the start of each race the class flag will be broken out and. a gun fired. (iii) Start. The class flag will be lowered and a gun fired. Simultaneously the class flag of the next race will be broken out. This will serve as the preparatory signal for that race. (iv) Recall. By loud hailer.

(v) General Recall. The firing of a gun together with flying of the 1st substitute (pendant, yellow with blue border). There will be no subsequent warning signal and the first substitute will be the new preparatory signal. All subsequent starts will be delayed 5 minutes.

7. Time Limit

Three hours from starting signal for each race.

8 . Shortening Course

Two orange balls hoisted on a mast on shore near the Finishing Line signifies that all classes will sail two laps only. One orange ball signifies that all classes will sail one lap only. In either case all classes should cross the Finishing Line without rounding buoy Z, G or W.

9. Postponement - Answering pendant (red and white stripes) for 15 minutes postponement.

1 0 . Cancellation - Code flag N ("blue and white check) together with class flag of cancelled event.

1 1 . Protests must be lodged in accordance with Rule 68 of the R.Y.A. Rules with the Officer of the Day within one hour of the finishing of the protesting yacht. A deposit of 10/- shall accompany each protest.

TEAMS RACES FOR KEEDLE TROPHY - 4TH APRIL, 1965.

1• The Keedle Trophy was presented for annual competition between the C.Y.C. and Y.M.S.C. for teams racing. This year the arrangements are in the hands of the C.Y.C. 2. The Commodore and members of the C.Y.C. ask that Y.M. members will feel free to use C.Y.C. facilities during the day and expecially that they and their friends will conclude the day by forgathering with them in the clubhouse. Rule s 3* Normal club race instructions will apply as supplemented by these instructions.

4* The special R.Y.A. rules on team racing will apply, viz.- (a) A yacht may not luff or bear away from her proper course in order to.manoeuvre against a yacht sailing another leg of the course - this rule is also extended to include any yacht in another event on any leg of the course. (b) Right-cf-way may be waived by team mates, provided that by so doing an opponent is not baulked; but if contact occurs and neither of the two team mates retires immediately, the higher—scoring team mate shall automatically be disqualified. 7 * ^ general class race will also be held for boats not included in the teams races and 'ill start immediately after. Entries must be lodged but there will be no entry fee. This race will be run in one or more divisions as appropriate which will be notified beforehand by the usual flag signals. (It will not count for point scores.) Scoring 8 . Point scores will be awarded as follows (a) The first yacht to finish shall score 3^ points more than the number of yachts in the race, the second yacht 2 more than the number of yachts in the race, the third yacht 1 more than the number of yachts in the race and so on. (b) In the event of a breach of the rules, a yacht retiring within a reasonable time thereafter shall score 3 points, but a yacht which does not so retire and which is subsequently disqualified on account of that breach shall score no points.

(c) A yacht concGrnGd in a broach of the rules on or shortly before crossing the finishing line shall be considered to have retired within a reasonable time if her retirement is notified to the committee as soon as is reasonably practicable.

(d) The retirement of a yacht (whether or not in reasonable time) shall not deprive that yacht of her normal right of protest against other competitors on the score of a breach of the rules.

(e) Any yacht having to retire on bona fide grounds other than a breach of the rules shall be awarded 4 points. Example; in a contest of six yachts -

.The 1st yacht in each race shall receive 9i points. 2nd 8 3rd 7 4th 6 5 th 5 6th - 4, 91 . A race shall be won by the team gaining the highest number of points.

The Keedle Trophy will be won by the club winning the most races.^ In the event of a tie, the trophy will be awarded to the club with the highest point score. Team Colours 11. Each boat competing shall wear distinguishing team colours from each side stay as follows;-

RACE INSTRUCTIONS - 1965/66 RULES. Races will be sailed under the current rules of the Yacht­ ing Association of New South Wales, except as modified by these instructions. The above rules shall apply between all boats racing or intending to race from the Warning Signal for the first race until the boat has finished her race and cleared the finish­ ing line or has retired.

STARTING LINE. The starting line is the extension of a line through, two posts on the point west of Lotus Bay. Two marks will be placed at the outer and inner limits of this line and boats must pass between these two marks. These two marks are not part of the starting line.

KEEPING CLEAR OF THE LINE. Boats intending to compete in any race while not actually engaged in starting shall keep clear of both the starting line and of all competitors who are about to start or who have started.

STARTING PROCEDURE

All starts will be scratch starts, except where stated in this programme.

Warning Signal. Ten minutes before the start of the first race code flag IT will be broken out on the mast on shore near the start­ ing line and a gun fired. The course letter applicable will be displayed on a board.

Preparatory Signal. Five minutes before the beginning of each race -the ^laas flag will he broken out and a gun fired. Start. The class flag will be lowered and a gun fired. Simultan­ eously the class flag of the next race will be broken out for which it will serve as the preparatory signal. Recall. Recalls will be indicated by the firing of a gun followed by loud hailer. Recall numbers will correspond with competitors’ sail numbers.

Ge ne r al E 0 c al 1. The firing of two. guns together with the flying of the first substitute. In the event of a general recall there will be no subsequent warning signal and the new preparatory signal will be the first substitute. All following starts will be delayed five minutes. _„

FINISHING LINE.The finishing line will be the same as the start- ing line. It will be crossed in the opposite direction from the starting line.

SHORTENING COURSES. Shortening courses shall be indicated by the display of numerals. These numerals will not be in the form of flags, but will be painted on boards and the appropriate number will be hung on the sea wall close to the finishing line. Nu­ meral 1 shall be displayed if the race is to be ended after one lap. Numerical 11 shall be displayed if the race is to be ended after two laps. ■—

POSTPONEMENT. Answering Pendant means "the scheduled time of the start of all races is postponed fifteen minutes". This post­ ponement can be extended indefinitely at fifteen minute intervals by dipping and re-hoisting the signal.

CANCELLATION OR ABANDONMENT. The flying of code flag N signifies that all races are cancell ed or-abandoned. TIME LIMIT. The time limit shall be three hours from the start- ing signal for that race. No race will count unless the course, or shortened course, is completed by the leading boat of that class within that time.

PROTESTS. These must be lodged in accordance with rule 6R with the Officer of the Day within one hour of the finish of the protesting boat. A fee of 10/— must accompany the protest, DLCLARATIONS. A declaration under Rule 14 is not required. CLASS RACES

Handicaps will be allotted initially by the Class Association. Handicaps will be adjusted automatically nccording to the results of the races. Any owner who wishes to have his handicap revised may apply in writing, with the support of another helmsman in his class, by 6 p.m. on 1st November, 1st January and 1st March respectively.

Handicaps will be in even minutes. Handicaps will be reduced by three minutes for a win, two minutes for a second place and one’ minute for third place. If a scratch boat receives a place that boat remains scratch but all other handicaps of boats which started in that race are increased accordingly. ---- ■HiJlTRIES. _A fee of 2/6 will be charged for each race and must be paid in advance. Alternatively, a seasonal fee of 30/- may be paid at the beginning of the season for all races other than special races or regattas, but before each race competitors must inform the Officer of the Day that he proposes to start. JOINTS. Points will be awarded on the following basis: point for starting finishing first place second place third place and so on until - 1 point for eighth. No points for lower places, other than for starting and finishing. Points are allotted to boats irrespective of owner or helmsman. BUOYANCY

A buoy bearing code flag "O" will be moored near the Committee vessel. Boats crossing the starting line may not pass between this buoy bearing the code flag "0" and the Committee vessel? it does not, however, form part of the line.

4. Finishing Line

Between a buoy bearing a code "0" flag moored off Lotus Bay and a flag pole carrying the respective class flags on the shore off Lotus Bay.

The start will normally be in the vicinty of Lotus Bay. In the case of winds from the easterly quarter, starts will be in the vicinity of Springbank Island and the first leg of the course will be to buoys Z, G or W for respective classes. These buoys shall be rounded to port for Course A and starboard for Course B. Subsequent buoys shall be rounded for courses as set out above.

6. Starting Procedure

(i) Warning Signal. Code flag U (red and white check) will be displayed on the Committee Vessel and gun fired 10 minutes before start of the first race; the course applicable will be displayed on a board.

(ii) Preparatory Signal, Five minutes before the start of each race the class flag will be broken out and a gun fired.

(iii) Start. The class flag will be lowered and a gun fired. Simultaneously the class flag of the next race will be broken out. This will serve as the preparatory signal for that race.

(iv) Recall. Recalls v/ill be indicated by the firing of ONE gun followed by loud hailing. Recall numbers will correspond with competitors' sail numbers.

(v) General Recall. The firing of TWO guns together with flying of the 1st substitute (pendant, yellow with blue border). There will be no subsequent warning signal and the first substitute will be the new preparatory signal. All subsequent starts will be delayed five minutes.

7. Time Limit

Three hours from starting signal for each race.

8. Shortening Course

Shortened courses shall be indicated by the display of numerals. These numerals shall not be in the form of flags, but will be painted on a board and the appropriate number will be displayed on the sea wall adjacent to the Finishing Line. Numeral 1 shall be displayed if the race is to be ended after one lap and Numeral II shall be displayed if the race is to be ended after two laps. Attention to the shortening of course shall be drawn by the firing of a gun. Thellast lap of the shortened course shall read as does the last lap set out in course instructions.

9. Postponement - Answering pendant (red and white stripes) for 15 minutes postponement.

11. Protests

Protests must be lodged in accordance with Rule 68 of the RYA RULES with the Officer of the Day within one hour of the finishing of the protesting yacht. A deposit of 10/- ($1) shall accompany each protests.

12. Retirement

... Retiring yachts are requested not to sail through the Finishing line and if possible, to lower their racing flag. The Committee would appreciate it if skippers of yachts which have retired could bring this to the attention of the Officer of the Day *

NOTICE OF RACE CANBERRA DAY REGATTA 1970 1. The Canberra Yacht Club v/ill conduct the 8th Annual Canberra Day Regatta on Lake Burley Griffin on 28th February and 1st March, 1970 and an invitation is extended to all yachtsmen to participate.

The Sailing Instructions for the Regatta are attached. The Canberra Yacht Club will be open at 10 a.m. on Saturday 4 March, ar'd at 9 a.m. on Sunday 5 March. Bar service will be available from 11 a.m.on Saturday and 10 a.m. on S u n d a y . The Club Caterer (Mr. Nick van Zomeran) will provide snacks in the Clubhouse from 12 noon on each day, continuing until after racing on Sun ay. Competitors are advised to place their orders for snacks at the Bar, prior to the race on Sunday, so that enacts will be available immediately after the race. Prices are as follows: Sandwiches 20c each Hamburgers 25c each Fies 20c each. On the evening of £ .turday 4 March there will be an Informal Dinner/Dance at the Club. A beffet dinner will be available from 7 p.m. at $2 par head. Prior booking is not necessary byt tickets may be archased from the Club Secretary during the day. Music will be provided for dancing. Visitors to the Cluo are asked to note that minimum dress in the Clubhouse includes shirt and footwear. Visitors are advised NOT to leave their valuables in the Change rooms. It is suggested that your locked car is a safer place. Yachts may be left on the lawns in the Club grounds on Saturday night at the owners risk. It is suggested that easily removeable items of equipment such as saiIs,expensive blocks etc., not be left in yachts. 8. Variations to Sailing Instructions The Sailing Committee may vary these Instructions by advice posted on the Sailing Notice Board in the Clubhouse up to one hour before the start of the race. 9. Late Entries "Beach" entries may be accepted up to ^ hour before the start of a race by the payment of an additional entry fee of 50 cents per race, (total of $1.50 per race).

STARTING LINE The starting line will be in West Basin and will be either: (a) between the aftermast of the Committee vessel and a buoy carrying Code Flag "O", or (b) between the mast in the Starter's enclosure on shore adjacent to the C.Y.C. and a buoy carrying Code Flag "0". A distance marker buoy carrying a red flag may be positioned adjacent to the Committee vessel or to the shoreward end of the line, as appropriate. This mark will not necessarily lie exactly on the starting line, but, after their preparatory signal has been made, competitors must NOT pass between it and the end of the line to which it is adjacent and must clear it when starting. Where possible, the first mark of the course will be to windward. The first leg of the course will be indicated by a number displayed on a botird on the Committee boat, or in the Starter’s enclosure, adjacent to the course letter (See Part C, Courses). STARTING PROCEDURE (a) All starts will be scratch starts (b) WARNING SIGNAL Ten minutes before the start of the first race code flag "U" will be displayed on the Starter's mast, and a gun may be fired. The course letter and the direction of the first leg of the course will be displayed on a board. (c) PREPARATORY SIGNAL Five minutes before the start of each race, the group flag will be displayed and a gun may be fired. (d) STiiRT The group flag will be lowered and a gun fired. Simultaneously the group flag of the next race will be displayed, and will serve as the preparatory signal.

(e) RECALLS (i) Recalls of individual yachts will be indicated by t he display of code flag "R" and a gun may be fired followed by hailing. Recall numbers will correspond to competitors' sail numbers. Code flag "R" will remain displayed until all recalled yachts have returned to the right side of the line or for a period of three minutes, whichever is the earlier. (ii) A general recall will be indicated by the flying of the First Substitute and a gun may be fired twice. The recalled Group shall then accept the start signal for the last scheduled event as its preparatory signal. If more than one Group has had _ general recall, they shall restart in the sequence as set out initially. 5 • SHORTENING COUF >E Shortened courses will be indicated by the display of code flag S and coloured shapea on the Eastern yard of the flag mast adjacent to the starters' caravan. 18. Conditions Competitors must be members of the International 505 Class. Change of crew is forbidden unless permitted by the Race Committee upon written application. Valid Measurement Certificates must be held for each com­ peting yacht. The committee reserves the right to measure or remeasure any boat, sails or spars at any time.

19. Alternative Penalties The 720 deg. turn penalty as provided in Rule 68.7, “ Alternative Penalties” , and Appendix 3, of the Yacht racing rules shall apply instead of disqualification for a Rule of part IV.
