The Basics of Proofs Spring 2010
The Basics of Proofs Spring 2010 BYU Math Department Today's Topics 1)Using definitions, theorems and laws 2)Using a counter-example 3)Proof by Contradiction 4)Proof by Induction General Rule of Thumb When you see a problem, always ask the following questions: 1)What do they want? 2)What do I know? 3)How can I use what I know to get what they want? Using Definitions, Theorems, and Laws Proofs are very different from the traditional math problem. Often the problem won't tell you all the information you need. This is why it's important to know the definitions, theorems, and laws listed throughout the section, chapter, and book. Let's try an example First, you need some definitions. These may seem obvious, but pretend that you've never been taught this stuff before. 1 + 1 = 2 Prove: 2 + 3 = 5 1 + 1 + 3 = 5 Let's start by asking the basic questions 1) What do they want? 2) What do I know? 3) How can I use what I know to get what they want? Example 1, cont. What do they want? How do I use what I 1 + 1 + 3 = 5 know to get what they What do I know? want? 1 + 1 = 2 Since 1 + 1 = 2 2 + 3 = 5 Then 1 + 1 + 3 = 2 + 3 And we know that 2 + 3 = 5 Therefore => 1 + 1 + 3 = 5. QED Quick Gear Change! You shouldn't (and your professors won't!) use standard English to write out the steps of your proofs. We will use notation instead. -

ANY RESEMBLANCE a Play in Two Acts
ANY RESEMBLANCE a play in two acts Any Resemblance 2. SYNOPSIS Stanley Curson, a small time Hollywood actor, has hit a rough patch: he’s broke, his wife has left him, and he is emotionally unable to file his side of the divorce papers. Out of the blue, he gets a recurring role on a TV show and is pulled into the strange orbit of Amy Star, a flirtatious and charismatic celebrity who is (in splashy media style) going through her own marital woes. In no time, Stanley becomes Amy’s mentor, confidante, therapist, father figure, and possible new boyfriend, placing him at serious odds with Amy’s movie star husband, Chad Finch. As his ex-wife’s cat provides a hilarious commentary, Stanley bounces from one crazy Hollywood situation to another until he is cast aside like a scene on the cutting room floor. He finally files those damn papers and gets on with a life that benefits mightily from a Hollywood education. Any Resemblance 3. CAST OF CHARACTERS Stanley Curson, a frequently unemployed actor, about 44, who wry, analytical, self-deprecating, and ready for a change. Chad Finch, a self-absorbed movie star who is not the sharpest tool in the shed. This actor also plays Friend, Someone (Scenes 15 and 50), Security 2, Matt, Tronson Pike, Umpire, and Tow Lot Guy. Officer Kawasaki is with the LAPD. He is very conservative, politically. He needn’t have Asian features. This actor also plays, Client, Manager AKA Jim, Mike, Batter, Man at Play, and the Minister, an older man who is itching for fight. -

Holes in Time: the Autobiography of a Gangster Frank J. Costantino
Holes in Time: The Autobiography of a Gangster Frank J. Costantino © 1979 Library of Congress Catalog Number 79-89370 DEDICATION To Chaplain Max Jones who has the courage to put God first, and the salvation of lost souls as his primary goal. In the day of negative thinking about the role of the prison chaplain, Max Jones stands as a shining example of Christian faith at work behind prison walls. …and to all the staff and directors of Christian Prison Ministries and prison workers everywhere. …and to Dr. Richard Leoffler, Dr. Donald Brown, Curt Bock and Don Horton who believed in me from the very beginning. …and to my wife of 17 years, Cheryl, who went through the whole prison experience with me. FOREWARD Frank was a professional criminal. He deliberately decided to be a thief and a robber. With protection from the underworld, he preyed on the upper world. In eleven years he participated in robberies and thefts totaling eleven million dollars. All this he did with no qualms of conscience. He reasoned that bankers and businessmen stole with their pens. He stole with his guns. He saw no difference. On his first felony conviction he received a sentence of 22 years in prison. There he had plenty of time to think and to reason within himself. The inhumanity that he witnessed demanded that he find out what he wanted to be, a giver or a taker. He reached the conclusion that those who don’t care leave holes in time. His personal encounter with Christ in the office of Chaplain Max Jones settled all the issues. -

3 Love Is a Fallacy
#3 Love is a Fallacy By Max Shulman Cool was I and logical. Keen, calculating, perspicacious, acute, and astute--I was all of these. My brain was as powerful as a dynamo, as precise as a chemist's scales, as penetrating as a scalpel. And--think of it!--I was only eighteen. It is not often that one so young has such a giant intellect. Take, for example, Petey Bellows, my roommate at the university. Same age, same background, but dumb as an ok. A nice enough fellow, you understand, but nothing upstairs. Emotional type. Unstable. Impressionable. Worst of all, a faddist. Fads, I submit, are the very negation of reason. To be swept up in every new craze that comes along, to surrender yourself to idiocy just because everybody else is doing it--this, to me, is the acme of mindlessness. Not, however, to Petey. One afternoon I found Petey lying on his bed with an expression of such distress on his face that I immediately diagnosed appendicitis. "Don't move," I said. "Don't take a laxative. I'll get a doctor." "Raccoon," he mumbled thickly. "Raccoon?" I said, pausing in my flight. "I want a raccoon coat," he wailed. I perceived that his trouble was not physical, but mental. "Why do you want a raccoon coat?" "I should have known it," he cried, pounding his temples. "I should have known they'd come back when the Charleston came back. Like a fool I spent all my money for textbooks, and now I can't get a raccoon coat." "Can you mean," I said incredulously, "that people are actually wearing raccoon coats again?" "All the Big Men on Campus are wearing them. -

Meet Me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the Protest Song Tradition on the Recent Work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012)
Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Meet me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the protest song tradition on the recent work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012) Supervisor: Paper submitted in partial Dr. Debora Van Durme fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of “Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde: Nederlands- Engels” by Michiel Vaernewyck May 2014 Word of thanks The completion of this master dissertation would not have been possible without the help of several people that have accompanied me on this road. First of all, thank you to my loving parents for their support throughout the years. While my father encouraged me to listen to an obscure, dusty vinyl record called The River, he as well as my mother taught me the love for literature and music. Thanks for encouraging me to express myself through writing and my own music, which is a gift that money just cannot buy. Secondly, thanks to my great friends of the past few years at Ghent University, although they frequently – but not unfairly – questioned my profound passion for Bruce Springsteen. Also, thank you to my supervisor dr. Debora Van Durme who provided detailed and useful feedback to this dissertation and who had the faith to endorse this thesis topic. I hope faith will be rewarded. Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who proofread sections of this paper and I hope that they will also be inspired by what words and music can do. As always, much love to Helena, number one Croatian Bruce fan. Thanks to Phantom Dan and the Big Man, for inspiring me over and over again.
