Kids today are a new breed. The information technology revolution has transformed their lives and offers massive potential for their education and entertainment. Creativity, adaptability and emotional intelligence are the key skills they require. We need teachers who can nurture their voracious appetites for learning for this century. We need a responsive industry with innovative thinkers designing content, both for and with them. Kids are seeking projects that inspire, but they are a tough audience to capture. This essay describes examples from around the world of producers coming to grips with new technology and new ways of storytelling for children, building on their acute interest in learning from screen content. As the Australian Government is considering new television content regulations, this essay argues for a new approach to the development of wide-ranging innovative media projects for children’s entertainment and education. ‘Patricia Edgar has seen the landscape of children’s media change over the past 50 years. In this essay she strikes a remarkable balance of appreciation for history and clear-eyed and optimistic views of the changing nature of digital media and children’s use of those media today and in the future. How smart this is: she argues for early and consistent media education, creative and innovative production of gaming, educationally purposeful and commercially successful media products for youth, and attention to media productions that offer a variety of diverse stories, characters and formats. Moreover, she argues persuasively that youth need to be involved in these productions. These writers have been commissioned to write a 5-10 minute play inspired by their own experience or perception of their rural environment. The writers are: Callum Beardmore, Olivia Bradbury, Jacob Hodgkinson , Natasha Marshall , Little John Nee, Tom Wentworth, Yasmin Wilde and Kat Woods. The plays will be released digitally on Wed 15 July and Wed 29 July 2020 on both companies’ websites and YouTube channels. Wednesday 15 July Jacob Hodgkinson – Roots Natasha Marshall – Crop Circle Tom Wentworth – No Place Kat Woods – Flat Wednesday 29 July Callum Beardmore – Youth’s Folly Olivia Bradbury – Walking with Mum Little John Nee – 2k from Killaloonty Yasmin Wilde - Monica As part of this project, Pentabus did an open call for writers from The Marches - Shropshire, Herefordshire and Mid-Wales. The two writers commissioned as part of this open call were Callum Beardmore and Olivia Bradbury. Both Callum and Tom Wentworth are alumni of Pentabus’ Young Writers’ Programme which has been running for seven years. All the plays have been given script development support and then the writers have filmed themselves, or their context, at home performing their own play. There will be a live performed reading of the plays at Pentabus HQ when it is appropriate to schedule this. For groups who may find it more difficult or even impossible to access digital content, there is the offer of a caller service – live readings of the plays over the phone, allowing people with little or no online access to experience these plays. -

GREG DAVIES UNITES TOP COMICS FOR A BENEFIT GIG AT LONDON’S EVENTIM APOLLO IN RESPONSE TO THE REFUGEE CRISIS On Wednesday 11th November, top names from the comedy world are coming together to help raise funds for charities - ActionAid and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Stand Up in Action - the one off comedy benefit night at London’s Eventim Apollo, will see a host of stars perform in aid of the current overwhelming global refugee crisis - the largest since the Second World War. The evening, hosted by GREG DAVIES (The Inbetweeners, Man Down, Channel 4), will include performances from fellow comics JO BRAND (Getting On, BBC One, Bake Off, An Extra Slice, BBC Two), ROISIN CONATY (Man Down, Channel 4, Impractical Jokers, BBC Three), RUSSELL HOWARD (Russell Howard’s Good News, BBC Two), REGINALD D HUNTER (multiple Perrier nominee, Reginald D Hunter's Songs of the South, BBC Two), DARA O’BRIAIN (Mock The Week, BBC Two) and JACK WHITEHALL (Fresh Meat, Channel 4, Bad Education, BBC Three) to name a few. All proceeds from the gig will be equally split between ActionAid and UNHCR to provide much needed support and assistance to refugees. ActionAid works with some of the world’s poorest women and children. They have been working with Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon since 2013, supporting over 90,000 people in the region and providing them with essential items such as clothing, hygiene items, torches, first aid kits as well as longer term support working with refugees in local communities. With the increase of migration to Europe, the island of Lesbos is often the first stop in Europe for many. -
