But there are good stories enough left, and it is hoped that some in the Red Fairy Book may have the attraction of being less familiar than many of the old friends. The tales have been translated, or, in the case of those from Madame d'Aulnoy's long stories, adapted, by Mrs. Hunt from the Norse, by Miss Minnie Wright from Madame d'Aulnoy, by Mrs. Lang and Miss Bruce from other French sources, by Miss May Sellar, Miss Farquharson, and Miss Blackley from the German, while the story of `Sigurd' is condensed by the Editor from Mr. William Morris's prose version of the `Volsunga Saga.' The Editor has to thank his friend, M. Charles Marelles, for permission to reproduce his versions of the `Pied Piper,' of `Drakestail,' and of `Little Golden Hood' from the French, and M. Henri Carnoy for the same privilege in regard to `The Six Sillies' from La Tradition. Lady Frances Balfour has kindly copied an old version of `Jack and the Beanstalk,' and Messrs. Smith and Elder have permitted the publication of two of Mr. Ralston's versions from the Russian. A. L. In the rare televised appearances outside of Slavic nations, Baba Yaga tends to show up in MOTW episodes. While some MOTW are contemporary inventions, many, like Baba Yaga, are mythological and fantastic creatures from folk narratives. Employing the concept of the folkloresque, we explore how contemporary audiovisual tropes gain integrity and traction by indexing traditional knowledge and belief systems. In the process, we examine key affordances of these forms involving the possibilities of wonder and the portability of tradition. Using digital humanities methods, we built a “monster typology” by scraping lists of folk creatures, mythological beasts, and other supernatural beings from online information sources, and we used topic modeling to investigate central concerns of MOTW series. Our findings indicate connections in these shows between crime, violence, family, and loss. The trope formulates wonder and families through folk narrative and monster forms and functions. We recognize Baba Yaga’s role as villain in these episodes and acknowledge that these series also shift between episodic and serial narrative arcs involving close relationships between characters and among viewers and fans. -

BIBLIOGRAPHY………………………………………………………60 iii Death Objectified, Life Affirmed: Mortality and Materialism in Russian Folktales Featuring Koschei the Deathless Koschei the Deathless, a stock villain of Russian folklore, is a powerful sorcerer who achieves immortality by physically hiding his death, which is treated as an object rather than an event. This project investigates the objectification of Koschei’s death as a product of cultural anxieties about the uncertainties of peasant life in the Late Tsarist period. The project has two parts, the first a literary analysis of the portrayal of Koschei the Deathless in early English translations of Russian folktales and their subsequent adaptations, and the second investigates how specific social factors (including literacy and mortality rates) may have influenced particular narrative attributes. -

Analysis of the Illustrations by Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin (1876-1942) to Russian Fairy Tales ABSTRACT The article analyzes the works performed by Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin, a Russian artist, whose artistic ascent took place at the turn of the 20th century while Russian intellectuals were actively engaged in identifying the specific features of Russian cultural identity. The article also provides a short description of the works by Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin in the context of visual arts theory and performance. The analysis of the artist’s works brings to light visual images of the Russian cultural identity that they contain and help to construct this identity in a specific way. Based on the philosophical, artistic, and culturological analysis of the two illustrations "Koschei the Deathless" (1901) and "Vasilisa the Beautiful at Baba Yaga’s Hut" (1899), the craftsman’s representative works on Russian fairy tales, an ethnocultural world view model was constructed in the works by Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin. The artistically displayed Russian cultural features visualized by the artist as "an emphasis on chthonic forces", "the quiet acceptance of death", "the coexistence of opposite forces, including life and death", "femininity", "the three-part structure of the world", "the relativity and transparency of boundaries", and "the forest as a model of the Russian world" have been specified. By resorting to folklore plots, the famous Russian artist Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin brought into light in his visual illustrations the archetypes that exert the greatest influence on the formation of ideas about the Russian world view, Russian people, and Russian cultural features.
