Always in light of promoting downtown Montreal, the business development corporation (SDC) works daily to make it an appealing place to live, work and be entertained. Amongst other things, the year 2015 has been marked by its numerous construction endeavours. Many construction projects announced in previous years finally took place. A huge thank you to our promoters who chose to come Carlos Ferreira and invest in the downtown area and make of it a place of President continuous renewal. It is always a delicate thing to name some of these accomplishments for fear of forgetting others of equal value. Most certainly, however, the work done in the railway terminal district and just south of the Bell Centre is worth mentioning. This entire sector that had been dilapidated and nearly abandoned for decades is now redeveloping at stellar speed. This past year has also been marked by public works and the refection of infrastructures. We hope that this will soon be done in order to show the true face of Montreal’s downtown district. The representation of the SDC before competent authorities have multiplied in 2015 and we continue to work André Poulin like this, constantly reminding them that their work can Executive director be conducted with more respect towards merchants, their clients and the entire body of downtown commuters. 4 SDC CENTRE-VILLE History and evolution Economic lever Created in 1999, Destination centre-ville Downtown Montreal’s numerous restau- is a non-profit organization. OUR MISSION : To be committed to the develop- ment, improvement and promo- tion of downtown Montreal. 5 Medium-term outlook Many projects to come in this vibrant borough: Work on Sainte Catherine : Work on Sainte-Catherine street is scheduled to begin in 2017. The aim is to make the street more merchant-centric, innovative, attractive and pleasant. Parking : To improve downtown Montreal’s parking by offering more parking spaces is one of several objectives for Destination centre-ville. We are giving this a lot of energy as we try to find solutions to this issue that affects workers, residents, clients, business suppliers and occasion travelers. A urban promenade : A river-mountain promenade, called Promenade Fleuve-Montagne will see the light just on time for Montreal’s 375th anniversary. Starting from the river and making its way up Beaver Hall, Sainte-Catherine, McGill College, Sherbrooke and McTavish streets before reaching the Mount Royal. 6 VISIBLE ACTIONS ON THE GROUND Out with the gloom, in with the bloom Each year, we not only enliven downtown streets with thousands of flowers that we set up on lamp posts and at the street level, but we also create urban gardens by parking lots. Herbs, berries and other edible produce grow amidst the business district. Downtown lights and glimmer The holiday season is a magical moment and it is important for the city to reflect this spirit. This is why, each year from November to March, Destination centre- ville sets up a total of 715 light decorations throughout major downtown arteries (Sherbrooke, de Maisonneuve, de la Montagne, Crescent, Sainte-Catherine, Robert-Bourassa and René-Lévesque). In addition, light garlands are set up in trees around four churches: Marie- Reine-du-Monde Cathedral, The Church of St-Andrew and St-Paul, St James the Apostle Anglican Church and St-George’s Anglican Church. 7 Clean streets seven days a week Our cleaning brigade, made up of 30 to 40 staff members depending on the season, ensures that the downtown Montreal streets are cleaned seven days a week.
