Cost: FireShot Pro is $34.95. Users can register for a 30-day free trial, but many features will disappear upon its expiration.

How to Use: To begin, install the add-on to a browser and right click on pages or portions you’d like to capture and edit. Demo: http://screenshot-program.com/fireshot/demo.php

Features: • Provides a set of editing and annotation tools for both the free and fee versions. • Users can quickly modify captures and insert text and graphical annotations on the clipboard. • Offers several capture modes, including: entire web page; visible area; selection; browser window and contents; and all tabs. • Screenshots can be saved to disk (PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP), printed (NEW), copied to a clipboard, e- mailed or sent to external editor for further processing. • A free image hosting web-server is also provided.

Pros: • Provides a variety of screen-capture options: visible page, entire page, selection. • Enables users to send, save, or print creations. • Compatible with several browsers, including , IE, Chrome, SeaMonkey, and Thunderbird. • The multi-editor interfaces allows user to quickly switch between captures and transfer images or annotations amongst them. Cons: • According to user reviews, after the 30-day free trial expires, pop-ups become frequent and frustrating. • The workspace doesn’t allow for a scroll. To perform editing on a large scale, you would need to create several workspaces and then join them together in another location. • The unlimited “Undo” feature disappears when the 30-day trial expires, and is only available in FireShot Pro. • Reviewers noted a tendency to freeze.

Ratings: • CNET

Example: Use Fireshot to manipulate information from webpages, such as “graying out” some information, while highlighting and pointing to other data. Useful for training and documentation.

COOL TOOLS CAFÉ, SUNDAY JULY 24, 2011 SPONSORED BY CS SIS, 1:30 – 2:45 PM, AALL ANNUAL MEETING & CONFERENCE SACRAMENTO COUNTY PUBLIC LAW LIBRARY DEMO Picnik – online image editing program Available at: http://www.picnik.com/

Overview: Use Picnick for photo image editing online in your browser. No download of software is required. The site was developed in 2007 and joined the Google family of apps in 2010. Use this program to grab your photos from anywhere, make them into masterpieces, and share them on the Internet.

Cost: Picnik gives you a few examples of their editing and creating tools for free. Picnik Premium is the pay version which is $24.95 per year, or $2.08 per month. The full version is updated with new features and is free of advertising. Subscriptions may be annual, six months, or monthly.

How to use: To get started grab your photos from anywhere you save them: , , , , Myspace, Photobucket or on your computer. Use the editor to perfect your photos and get creative. The Picnik Help Center has a “Getting Started Guide” : http://www.google.com/support/picnik/?hl=en

Features: • Tools to make your photos perfect : crop, rotate, resize, auto-fix, sharpen, and more. • Or give your photos a whole new look: sepia, black and white, and color boost and more. • Create photo compositions: use designer fonts, stickers, frames and themed graphics. • Improve your photos: remove red eye, whiten teeth, zap blemishes and more. • Combine dozens of pictures into photo collages – fancy collages, photo shows, and widgets. • Share your projects on social media and other sites.

Pros: • Grab your photos from anywhere you save them: Facebook, Picasa, Twitter, Flickr, Myspace, Photobucket or your computer. Also use a webcam to take photos and upload to Picnik. • Web based so can work on photo projects anywhere you have internet access. • Lots of fun features to create personal digital photo projects. • Saves disc space so no software has to be downloaded. • Available in multiple languages including Spanish, French and more.

Cons: • Limitations for free users. Restricted to uploading only 10 photos for a photo show. Also, doesn’t save premium features tested in your file. Only can upload 5 photos at one time. • Frequent pop ups suggesting upgrading to the Premium fee-based version are annoying. • A monthly fee is charged for the premium features, rather than a one-time purchase. May be more affordable for an institutional purchase rather than an individual purchase.

Example 1. Photo collage of children using the add stickers feature.

Example 2. Photo collage of the Sacramento County Public Law Library using the themes feature.

COOL TOOLS CAFÉ, SUNDAY JULY 24, 2011 SPONSORED BY CS SIS, 1:30 – 2:45 PM, AALL ANNUAL MEETING & CONFERENCE SACRAMENTO COUNTY PUBLIC LAW LIBRARY DEMO Snag it – screen capture software Available at: http://www.techsmith.com/snagit/

Overview: Snag anything, on the fly. Grab your entire desktop, a region, a window, or a scrolling window—all with a single hotkey or click. Use mark up tools to draw attention with arrows or add text. Save it in your various file formats, paste into Microsoft Applications, embed in a screencast or publish to the web. Created in 1990 to capture and print “early” Windows screens, the current Version 10 was released in 2010.

Cost: Full version is $48.95 to download. Free version available for 30 days trial.

How to use: Snag it Learning Center videos available at: http://www.techsmith.com/learn/snagit/10/ Getting started Guide: http://download.techsmith.com/snagit/docs/gettingstarted/enu/10/Snagit-10-Getting-Started.pdf

Features: • Snagit captures any image from your computer screen – just like your print screen key…even long web pages. • Create and share high-quality screen captures for your presentations, documents and blogs. • Use the image editor to add text, arrows, and effects to turn it into a fun or professional image. • Insert hotspots in screen captures such as hyperlinks and mouse-over pop-ups. • Add keywords and flags to the captures to allow searching of images in the Snagit Editor Library. • Send images to specific programs or web destinations including blogs, productivity applications, and Microsoft Office applications.

Pros: • Easy to capture any portion of a computer screen or web page and paste into a file. • Captures an entire web page – not just the window being displayed – and saves it as a PDF file. • Snagit program was developed in 1990 and is likely to continue to be updated in the future. • Vendor provides lots of instructional videos and a “Getting Started Guide” on their website. • Search to find captures by keywords, flags or other information automatically generated during capture.

Cons • Fewer markup tools than some image editing programs, but it has the essentials. • The free version expires in 30 days so will need to purchase to continue to access your images. • Full version is a bit expensive at $48.95 per year.

Example 1. Capture of an ILS screen-shot, plus added arrows and text. Great for creating user documentation or for staff or patron training classes:

Cool Tools Cafe 2011 Tawnya K. Plumb Kate Fitz ([email protected]) Sacramento County Public Law Library www.saclaw.org Cool Tools Café Creating Animated Movies for Free (or Cheap)

http://goanimate.com

What is it? Online site to make animated movies. It’s easy to make basic videos, and surprisingly robust for a free (freemium) tool. The videos are fun to make and watch. What to use it for? The videos can introduce or demonstrate procedures and topics. We have used it with our self-help step-by-step to liven-up otherwise predictable screencasts on court process. It’s inherently a little silly, not appropriate for all topics.

How to use it? Begin by logging in and clicking

• Choose your scene from many available. • Select characters and click to add to the scene. Click on them in the scene to move them, give them text, add props, etc. • Record dialog and upload as MP3. Choose from a list of available background music or upload your own. • FX lets you zoom in and out, add effects like crowd cheering, an earthquake, and more. Some of these options cost “GoBucks” while others are free.

What does it cost? Basic plan: free (2 minute limit; extra goodies cost “GoBucks”)

Three month plan: $6.00/month (longer videos and downloading capability; some items still cost “GoBucks”) GoBucks: $ 10 buys 1,000 GoBucks (used to purchase extra characters, props, scenery, etc.)

Where to use it? Download for personal use (with watermark) $1 Download for commercial use pricing varies (much higher) Upload to YouTube (free) Embed in web page (free)

http://www.watchthatpage.com/

Watchthatpage is a service that lets you monitor web pages by pushing out any changes to your page through your email.

How Does it Work?  After setting up an account, add any page through Watchthatpage’s save bookmarklet in your browser.  Watchthatpage will check the page at whatever frequency you set and email you changes are made.  You can organize your saved pages into “channels” to streamline your email updates.  Folders are available to further organize your pages into categories and subcategories for easy access.

Power Point Alternatives: Tools for Creating Non-Linear Presentations

Option 1: Prezi. Prezi (http://prezi.com) is a tool that allows users to create presentations on a single large canvas and then zoom in and out over different sections as the users present. Prezi offers several different account options. These range from a free Public version where all content a user creates is public to a Pro version for $159 a year which allows users to work offline and keep content private to Edu versions for students and teachers. Prezi offers free access to a number of useful tutorials and cheat sheets for new users at http://prezi.com/learn.

Option 2: Ahead. Ahead (http://ahead.com) is another service that can be used to create zooming presentations and, in fact, it is marketed as a tool for creating websites and media walls as well as presentations. Currently there are two plans available, a free plan that only allows public presentations and has limitations on storage and number of visitors, and a Pro plan that offers more features for $35 a month. It has many of the same pros and cons as Prezi but additional factors are described below.
