    Doctor Who and the politics of casting Lorna Jowett, University of Northampton Abstract: This article argues that while long-running science fiction series Doctor Who (1963-89; 1996; 2005-) has started to address a lack of diversity in its casting, there are still significant imbalances. Characters appearing in single episodes are more likely to be colourblind cast than recurring and major characters, particularly the title character. This is problematic for the BBC as a public service broadcaster but is also indicative of larger inequalities in the television industry. Examining various examples of actors cast in Doctor Who, including Pearl Mackie who plays companion Bill Potts, the article argues that while steady progress is being made – in the series and in the industry – colourblind casting often comes into tension with commercial interests and more risk-averse decision-making. Conisbee, which has a large biography section. 2 Bedfordshire People Past Offa (? -796 BC) King Offa, regarded as one of the most powerful kings in early Anglo-Saxon England, ruled for 39 years from 757 to his death in 796. It is traditionally believed that he was buried in Bedford, somewhere near Batts Ford. Falkes De Breaute (1180-1225) A French soldier and adventurer, Falkes's loyalty to King John was rewarded with a number of titles. The king also gave him Bedford Castle, which Falkes held until 1224 when it was besieged and demolished by King Henry III. Falkes escaped and fled to the continent but died on route from food poisoning. Queen Eleanor (1244-1290) The sad death of Queen Eleanor links her to Dunstable. She died in Lincolnshire and King Edward 1st – her husband – wanted her to be buried in Westminster, thus the body was taken back to London and passed through Dunstable. The king ordered memorial crosses to be erected at every place the funeral cortege stopped overnight.

VOL X Life Among the Dog People of Paddington Rec, Volume X “Dog Day Aftermath” Anthony Linick Copyright © 2018 Anthony Linick Introduction The same day that we returned after two months in California – having decided that we would not be moving back to the States at the beginning of our retirement – my wife Dorothy and I took our property off the market … and ordered a puppy. Fritz the Schnauzer arrived a few weeks later and by the end of June, 2003, we had entered that unique society of dog owners who people London’s Paddington Recreation Ground. The society in which we were now to take our place remains a unique one, an ever-changing kaleidoscope of dogs and their owners. The dogs represent most of the popular breeds and many of the mutt-like mixtures – and so do their accompanying humans, who come from diverse nationalities and from many walks of life: professionals and job seekers, young and old, family members and loners. They are united in their love of dogs, and on the central green of the park, on its walkways and at the café where they gather after exercising their animals, they often let this affection for dogs carry them into friendships that transcend park life and involve many of them in additional social activities. Fritz had been a member of the pack for about a year when I decided to keep a daily record of his antics and the folkways of the rest of the crew, human and canine.

    PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZOË LAW 19 MARCH – 03 MAY 2020 Legends of British Industry BY PHOTOGRAPHER ZOË LAW British photographer Zoë Law (b.1975) began a portrait project in 2017 to celebrate key individuals who have directly influenced her life and career. As the series evolved, it expanded to include more broadly inspirational figures from the worlds of fashion, finance, journalism and entertainment, whom Law ‘considered to be British legends – industry leaders, icons of the creative industries, sports stars and others’. Renowned figures of stage and screen feature alongside unsung heroes, such as voice coaches and charity leaders, each photographed in a setting conceived by the artist. A selection of these portraits are included in this display, and the complete set can be seen in the accompanying publication, Legends of British Industry. Law began her career in the music industry, and worked as a make- up artist for magazines including Tatler and Vogue, before taking up portrait photography. She works exclusively in black and white, and her portraits of Theresa May MP and Julian Fellowes, Lord Fellowes of West Stafford, have recently been acquired for the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection. This series is dedicated to Maggie’s, a charity providing free cancer support and information. Having lost family members to the disease, Law understands the vital work that Maggie’s undertakes to help people live well with cancer, and many of the sitters in Law’s portraits are passionate supporters of the organisation. Law previously collaborated with Maggie’s on the 2016 touring exhibition, Life, which featured portraits of people directly affected by cancer, representing their joy for life and resilience, during and beyond the illness.
