Dominic Soto, Theologian of the Council of Trent
DOMINIC SOTO THEOLOGIAN OF THE COUNCIL OF TRENT (1494-1560) One of the most renowned and erudite scholars of his time, and one whom the Order of Friars Preachers may proudly place before the present-day scholars of the world as an example wor thy of admiration and emulation is Dominic Soto, known as "Theologian of the Council of Trent." Unlike many scholars of his day Soto was born of poor par ents, in the year 1494, in Segovia, in Old-Castile, during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella. At baptism he received his father's name, Francis, and on entering the Dominican Order took the name of Dominic. Here at Segovia his childhood was spent. His father, a poor gardener, had destined the youth to follow this same humble occupation. But Dominic felt himself called to something more elevated, and so evident were his precocious talents and his passion for study that he was finally allowed to attend the schools of Segovia, where he devoted his attention to such subjects as reading, writing and the elements of Latin Gram mar. Poverty, however, soon forced him to abandon school and seek employment as sacristan of the Dominican church in the neighboring village of Ochand, where he first became acquainted with the Dominicans. For several years he fulfilled the duties of sacristan, an occupation which was peculiarly agreeable to him, inasmuch as it was favorable to his tender piety and afforded him, moreover, ample time for study. At this period Soto's intellectual development was great and the Lord, Whom he served with all the devotion of his heart, crowned his labors with success by enabling him to pursue his studies in the Univer sity of Alcala, where he studied under the famous Thomas de Villanova, afterwards Archbishop of Valentia and later canonized by Pope Alexander VII. -

Augustine Thompson O.P. Office Hours: TBA at St. Albert’s Priory Course Description This course is a 1.5 unit graded liturgical practicum open to Dominican friar students, normally after residency year, best in the year of deaconal or priestly ordination. The goal is to acquire the ability to celebrate Low Mass and Missa Cantata according to the traditional Dominican Rite in Latin. The outcome will be a correct and fluid "dry Mass" celebration of the Dominican Rite Low Mass and of the Missa Cantata. These two exercises will in equal parts provide the two graded "exams" of the course. The format will be a practicum in which students perform the rite under the direction of the instructor. Admission to the Class Dominican friars who would like to be admitted to the class need to arrange an interview with the instructor. At the interview they will be asked to recite from memory the texts found on the next page. This memorization is not-negotiable and will serve to prove that the student is ready to undertake the heavy memorization element of the class. Introitus: The Entrance Chant of the mass in the Roman Rite The Introit (introitus in Latin) is the proper chant which begins the Roman rite Mass. There is a unique introit with its own proper text for each Sunday and feast day of the Roman liturgy. The introit is essentially an antiphon or refrain sung by a choir, with psalm verses sung by one or more cantors or by the entire choir. Like all Gregorian chant, the introit is in Latin, sung in unison, and with texts from the Bible, predominantly from the Psalter. The introits are found in the chant book with all the Mass propers, the Graduale Romanum, which was published in 1974 for the liturgy as reformed by the Second Vatican Council. (Nearly all the introit chants are in the same place as before the reform.) Some other chant genres (e.g. the gradual) are formulaic, but the introits are not. Rather, each introit antiphon is a very unique composition with its own character. Tradition has claimed that Pope St. Gregory the Great (d.604) ordered and arranged all the chant propers, and Gregorian chant takes its very name from the great pope. But it seems likely that the proper antiphons including the introit were selected and set a bit later in the seventh century under one of Gregory’s successors. They were sung for papal liturgies by the pope’s choir, which consisted of deacons and choirboys. The melodies then spread from Rome northward throughout Europe by musical missionaries who knew all the melodies for the entire church year by heart. -

UNDERSTANDING WHEN TO KNEEL, SIT AND STAND AT A TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS __________________________ A Short Essay on Mass Postures __________________________ by Richard Friend I. Introduction A Catholic assisting at a Traditional Latin Mass for the first time will most likely experience bewilderment and confusion as to when to kneel, sit and stand, for the postures that people observe at Traditional Latin Masses are so different from what he is accustomed to. To understand what people should really be doing at Mass is not always determinable from what people remember or from what people are presently doing. What is needed is an understanding of the nature of the liturgy itself, and then to act accordingly. When I began assisting at Traditional Latin Masses for the first time as an adult, I remember being utterly confused with Mass postures. People followed one order of postures for Low Mass, and a different one for Sung Mass. I recall my oldest son, then a small boy, being thoroughly amused with the frequent changes in people’s postures during Sung Mass, when we would go in rather short order from standing for the entrance procession, kneeling for the preparatory prayers, standing for the Gloria, sitting when the priest sat, rising again when he rose, sitting for the epistle, gradual, alleluia, standing for the Gospel, sitting for the epistle in English, rising for the Gospel in English, sitting for the sermon, rising for the Credo, genuflecting together with the priest, sitting when the priest sat while the choir sang the Credo, kneeling when the choir reached Et incarnatus est etc. -

The news S accounts have been concerned with the radical changes, the upset of traditional practices, and the technical details of the re stored Holy Week services, but the real issue in the reform is the development of true holiness in the members of Christ's Church. This is the expectation of Pope Pius XII, as expressed personally by him. It is insisted upon repeatedly in the official language of the new laws - the goal is simple: that the faithful may take part in the most sacred week of the year "more easily, more devoutly, and more fruitfully." Certainly the changes now commanded ,by the Apostolic See are extraordinary, particularly since they come after nearly four centuries of little liturgical development. This is especially true of the different times set for the principal services. On Holy Thursday the solemn evening Mass now becomes a clearer and more evident memorial of the Last Supper of the Lord on the night before He suffered. On Good Friday, when Holy Mass is not offered, the liturgical service is placed at three o'clock in the afternoon, or later, since three o'clock is the "ninth hour" of the Gospel accounts of our Lord's Crucifixion. -

CHAPTER IX Dress and Armour As we gather together the relics brought to light from the abandoned wells and rubbish-pits at Newstead, the figure of the Roman soldier inevitably rises before us. It is a figure rendered familiar by the great monuments which commemorate Imperial triumphs, and by the portrait-reliefs which once stood above the graves of centurions, cavalry soldiers, or standard-bearers recalling to the passers-by the likeness of the dead. It is to such memorials, and to the scanty finds of weapons and armour which have been preserved to our time, that we owe most of the knowledge we possess regarding the arms and equipment of the army of the Empire. The columns and the triumphal arches furnish us with a series of pictures of the soldier in action. The victories of Trajan over the Dacians are sculptured on the column which he had set up in Rome in A.D. 104. The triumphs of Marcus Aurelius over the Marcomanni are unfolded in the reliefs decorating the huge pillar that gives its name to the Piazza Colonna. We follow each stage in the campaigns, the army making roads, building bridges, constructing forts, attacking and attacked. Many details are given which help us to realise vividly the scenes commemorated. No doubt in such sculptures, executed, as they were, in Rome, the artists drew their inspiration to some extent from older Hellenic models, and there thus enters into the treatment a somewhat conventional element. The grave stones of the legionaries or auxiliaries, on the other hand, are probably more exact in details. -

The day’s theme comes from the entrance antiphon reflecting on Isaiah 66:10-11: “Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. -

Fourth Sunday of Lent Pink or Laetare Sunday is the liturgical way to remind us during this somber season of Lent, to "lighten up" and remember that our salvation is a present reality. Often we, as Prophetic Disciples can take for granted, the most marvelous event ever to shake human history. It was summed up in the Gospel just proclaimed to you: "God so loved the world that God gave God's only Begotten One, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (Jn 3:16). Three words in that sentence are crucial: love, give, life. God loved…so God gave…that we might live. Each word is mystery-laden, but the mystery has been somewhat unveiled. A word on each word. I. Love First, "God so loved the world." It's awesome. Many of us—perhaps most of us—have a fearsome idea of God. For whatever reason—childhood experience, grade-school religion, a fire and brimstone homilist—many a Christian sees God only as judge. I mean the God who "answered [Moses] in thunder" (Exodus 19:19). The God who sent serpents to bite the people (Numbers 21: 6; the God who refused to let Moses enter the Promised Land "because you broke faith with me" (Deut 32:51); the God who punished David's offspring for David's adultery. -etc. etc. Unfortunately, many grow up to see in the Hebrew Scriptures a punishing God, a God waiting to pounce on the sinner. Often we fail to remember the God who heard Israel's cry of despair and responded in unforgettable phrases that spell LOVE.
