Kuttanad region is a low-lying area, below the sea level, surrounded by the Vembanad Lake. It is a merging place of four rivers like Achankovil, Pamba, Manimala and Meenachil. The situation is ‘water water everywhere but not a drop to drink’. There are 13 Gram Panchayats in Kuttanad area and we have a requirement of 26.7 MLD water. Various studies conducted in the area show that water in the Vembanad Lake is contaminated owing to continuous use of pesticides in the paddy fields of Kuttanad and the increased tourism activity at the lake. Various water-borne diseases, especially cancer, are the order of the day. Healthy living of the people is under threat due to water contamination. In order to provide safe drinking water, a comprehensive drinking water supply scheme is the only solution. The Kerala Water Authority in the Government of Kerala has prepared a submitted a comprehensive water supply scheme for Rs.204 crore to Central Government for assistance under Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), but JICA is not ready to assist the project. (b1/1105/gm-asa) I would like to ask the hon. Minister whether the Government of India will consider taking up the project with financial assistance of World Bank or any other financial sources.
