1918 ~ 2018 In this exceptional year marking the Centenary of the end of the First World War. The Royal British Legion has lead a national movement to say “Thank You” to the entire First World War gen- eration - all who served, sacrificed and changed our world. Thanking people of all Commonwealth nations - not just those who fell on the battlefield; but also those who played their part on the home front and those who returned to SEA of POPPIES at the TOWER of LONDON build a better future. War broke out and the Commonwealth answered the call with volunteers from far and wide including pre-partition India, the Caribbean and Africa, all of whom make up a valued part of life in the UK. We recognise them today as part of the global family of the free and equal nations of the Commonwealth and we honour their contribution to the First World War as second to none. Almost 1.5 million men volunteered with the Indian Expeditionary Force during WW1. It was the largest British Empire Armed Force besides the British Army itself. Indian troops were awarded over 13,000 medals for gallantry during the war including eleven Victoria Crosses. This year’s Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday 11th November commences from the Town Hall at approx. 10.40am, arriving at the War Memorial in time for a two minute silence at 11am. The wreath laying ceremony will then take place with the service scheduled to start at approx. 11.30am in St Marys Church.

Now that Chris and his girlfriend, Rose, have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behaviour as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined. Funny, scary, and thought-provoking, 'Get Out' seamlessly weaves its trenchant social critiques into a brilliantly effective and entertaining horror/comedy thrill ride.

New Toddler Park Officially Opened

The Town Council is pleased to announce that the Toddler Park in Road Recreation Park was officially opened on 18th October by Town Councillors and parents that initiated the project. This project had been talked about for a number of years but finances did not allow it to go ahead. Two years ago the Town Council was approached by a group of parents with suggestions about the need for some play equipment for toddlers 18 months to 4 years. Working in partnership with this group, and following a number of meetings with them, the project was moved forward. This then coincided with an anonymous donation of £11,000 from a resident in Callington specifically for toddler play equipment. The Town Council applied for a grant from the Big Lottery, which was successful and the Town Council match fund- ed this. The project then came to fruition and resulted in the toddler equipment being installed by Wicksteds. Thank you to all involved: the person who donated the initial funding; the Big Lottery for the grant; the group of parents for pursuing the project; Wicksteds for the installation and their advice; the Outside Services staff for all the work they have done. By working in partnership the project is now complete and we hope that the toddlers enjoy this area, although there are some picnic benches and bins yet to be installed around the area.

The Outside Services Committee and staff work extremely hard to maintain Callington and Kelly Bray to the standard it is. We have done the last grass cut of the year so it is now time for us to look at maintenance for the winter months, which will include the inspection and refurbishing of all 35 benches throughout the parish. Staff this year have also refurbished equipment in Tamar Close and Saltash Road Park. Next year we will be looking at refurbishing Rosemullion Park and possibly a project in Launceston Road. The Outside Services work is continual, but it is very much hampered by vandalism, which also puts a strain on the Council’s budget. Please report any vandalism to the Police and Town Clerk.

We look forward to next year and another beautiful display of flowers around the town. If you would like to sponsor or help with maintaining the flowers it would be appreciated. The Town Council is always open to ideas and suggestions from the community so please feel free to come along to a meeting.

The new season started in October, and the captain Tony Quinn is hopeful that the new strip will act as an incentive to achieve a higher spot in the table than last year.

“ Autumn, Season of Mists and Mellow fruitfulness and our CHILDREN’S ART COMPETITION! Yes, that’s right, in keeping with the 2019 theme of “Callington Past and Present” we wish to invite children and adults if they so wish to enter our competition to create an A4 sized picture of their house using any medium. The winner’s pictures will be used to enhance our display of photographs and art linked to maps of the town and surrounding Parishes. Entries should be submitted to the TOWN HALL by 31st January 2019, there will be a £10 Prize for the winner of each category, under 6s, under 11s and under 16s as at 31/1/18. Adult entries will be accepted, but a claim to fame is all regrettably that you can expect! On the back of your entry please state Name, Age, Address, with Parent / Guardian signature and if possible an e-mail address, as all competitors will receive a certificate. Winners will be notified, good luck, should be fun! The Dr Trowbridge anecdotes linger on, the latest of which comes from Jeremy Davidson from Tutwell who relates that back in the late 40s/50s he was contacted by the family and offered a dismantled 1933 “L2” six cylinder MG which was in pieces and occupying the lean-to Greenhouse at the back of 5 Church St. Jeremy was apparently well known locally for his passion for MG cars and duly had the parts removed, reassembled, restored. It was back on the road and driven by him a year or so later! (Terry Bolt eat your heart out). It has to be said one of our more bizarre stories. Now you may recall that in last month’s edition I had appealed for info on the location of a “Trafalgar Square” in Kelly Bray the site of the Official visit in 1909 of the Duke of Cornwall later to become King George V when thousands flocked into the little square, well thanks to Daphne Pearce we think we now have the answer. I suppose in a way it was staring us in the face as there already is a “Trafalgar Terrace”. Daphne believes it occupied the corner and rear opposite Pearce’s Bakery. (In my youth it was partially taken up by a Council Yard). This would tie in with the fact that the land was owned by James Venning and the road mentioned, although not named, would have been Station Road / Tavistock Road. Venning obviously had grand plans for this site, as I detect a latent desire on his part to create a sculpted Public Place. I don’t think however this ever came to fruition, much like the proposed and aborted railway line which traversed the same territory. Maybe that was the reason in the end none of the proposals took off. I will finish with one more appeal, a recent enquiry at the HC, “Does anyone know the origins of “Hangman’s Lane”, as displaced by Callington’s bye-pass? It has always been that name as far as I can recollect and was part of the route of our School Cross Country, but did it have it’s origins in something sinister? Well that’s it for November, the Centre is now closed, but as ever you will find us maintaining a watching and labouring brief every Friday between 10am and 4pm if you have anything of interest. I hope you have enjoyed this year’s exhibition. Chris Cansfield 01752-851403.

Rural Communities Remember

Battling On has been awarded ten glass silhouettes from the Community Covenant Grant scheme ‘There but Not There’, for its two day remembrance event which will be held at Battling On’s Centre at Merryhue Farm for Armistice Day. The event entitled Rural Communities Remember will teach young primary school children about all those lost to our communities and the devastating impact that had on the rural economy.

The event will be held over two days the 1st and 2nd of November and will involve local primary school children, cadets and local representatives from parishes around East Cornwall.

The glass silhouettes will be placed around the farm at different stations where actors playing the roles of the shepherds, foresters, herdsmen, heavy horse handlers, horticulturalists etc. will tell the stories of real people lost to our farms, villages, towns and hamlets to help the children understand the true impact of the war. Within Callington one family lost three sons and we feel these are stories which need to be told and passed down through the generations. At each of the stations the young people will see rural skills being undertaken such as heavy horses pulling timber, shepherds working with sheep etc. and the tour guides will explain how the loss of so many affected the farming community.

Battling On has a replica World War 1 Field Kitchen and will be producing food for the primary school children to taste what soldiers on the frontline would have been eating. The food will be cooked from WW1 army rations packs. In addition, there will be a World War 1 trench for the children to explore so they can see the conditions the men had to endure when

fighting. At the end of the day Battling On will be reading out the names of the young men lost locally with the marine cadets playing the Last Post. If anyone is interested in this event or have stories or names from their families that you would like to share at the Rural Communities Remember, please let us know. The contact details are [email protected].
