Hagerman Title of Study: Don’t fear the nobodies: A critical youth study of the Columbiner Instagram community Pages in Study 139 Candidate for Degree of Master of Arts This research sheds light on how one particular group of young people, Columbiners, use social media to build and maintain a sense of community. Through a content analysis of 200 Instagram posts containing a school shooting fandom hashtag, or #Columbiner, and drawing on both Critical Youth Studies and Sense of Community Theory, this research demonstrates how Columbiners use their hashtag to create a sense of community on Instagram, to explore what it means to be young and cool, and to make sense of the problems that shape their social world, including school shootings. Exploring how this particular group of young people engage with each other on social media provides researchers an opportunity to listen to young people as they develop their understandings of topics as seemingly mundane as homework to those as serious as school shootings.     Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

Certainly, the anonymity afforded by cities facilitated same-sex sexual activity, while the sheer numbers of people in cities made possible the creation of communities based on minority sexual interests. Similarly, the disruptions of World War I and World War II both hastened the urbanization of the United States and contributed to the development of an American glbtq community that made possible the twentieth-century gay rights movement.

    The goal of this report is to help law enforcement and policy makers discover and identify a hidden link to the prevalence of violence and suicide in the community: psychotropic drugs. Facts, statistics, studies and expert opinion show the medical concerns about the rise of senseless acts of violence coincident with the increase in psychotropic drug prescriptions and usage. Psychiatric drugs create dependence, suicide and violence in a percent of individuals taking them. Psychiatric Drugs: That is a documented fact. The disastrous consequences are felt by all. As so many lives are at stake, it is vital that each person who is in a position to take action avail themselves of this information to help protect our communities.
