1 24 JEWISH INFLUENCE IN THE MASS MEDIA, Part II In 1985 Laurence Tisch, Chairman of the Board of New York University, former President of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal, an active supporter of Israel, and a man of many other roles, started buying stock in the CBStelevision network through his company, the Loews Corporation. The Tisch family, worth an estimated 4 billion dollars, has major interests in hotels, an insurance company, Bulova, movie theatres, and Loliards, the nation's fourth largest tobacco company (Kent, Newport, True cigarettes). Brother Andrew Tisch has served as a Vice-President for the UJA-Federation, and as a member of the United Jewish Appeal national youth leadership cabinet, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, among other Jewish organizations. By September of 1986 Tisch's company owned 25% of the stock of CBS and he became the company's president. And Tisch -- now the most powerful man at CBS -- had strong feelings about television, Jews, and Israel. The CBS news department began to live in fear of being compromised by their boss -- overtly, or, more likely, by intimidation towards self-censorship -- concerning these issues. "There have been rumors in New York for years," says J. J. Goldberg, "that Tisch took over CBS in 1986 at least partly out of a desire to do something about media bias against Israel." [GOLDBERG, p. 297] The powerful President of a major American television network dare not publicize his own active bias in favor of another country, of course. That would look bad, going against the grain of the democratic traditions, free speech, and a presumed "fair" mass media.

The Holocaust The Historicalin Perspective Bauer Yehuda The Holocaust in Historical The Holocaust Perspective Yehuda Bauer in Historical Between 1941 and 1945, the Nazi regime em barked on a deliberate policy of mass murder that resulted in the deaths of nearly six million Jews. What the Nazis attempted was nothing less than the total physical annihilation of the Perspective Jewish people. This unprecedented atrocity has come to be known as the Holocaust. In this series of four essays, a distinguished his torian brings the central issues of the holocaust to the attention of the general reader. The re sult is a well-informed, forceful, and eloquent work, a major contribution to Holocaust histo Yehuda Bauer riography. The first chapter traces the background of Nazi antisemitism, outlines the actual murder cam paign, and poses questions regarding the reac tion in the West, especially on the part of American Jewish leadership. The second chap ter, “Against Mystification,” analyzes the vari ous attempts to obscure what really happened. Bauer critically evaluates the work of historians or pseudohistorians who have tried to deny or explain away the Holocaust, as well as those who have attempted to turn it into a mystical experience. Chapter 3 discusses the problem of the “by stander.” Bauer examines the variety of re sponses to the Holocaust on the part of Gen tiles in Axis, occupied, Allied, and neutral lands. Yet, the baseless myth that Jews don’t serve persists even today. In the post-Civil War era — a war in which thousands of Jews fought and sacrifi ced on both sides — that antisemitic canard motivated a group of 63 Jewish veterans to form the Hebrew Union Veterans Association (HUVA) in New York City March 15, 1896 — 125 years ago. Eventually joining forces with their Southern counterparts, along with veterans of the Spanish- 4 5 American War, they became what is now known as the Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America, standing tall as the nation’s oldest continuously operating veterans service organization with the motto: “A Jewish voice for Veterans; a Veteran’s voice for Jews.” A well-crafted 20-minute documentary, “Spirit, Courage and Conviction,” offers detail and context.

It consciously puts aside the Ukraine; Ukrainian People’s question of Symon Petliura’s personal guilt, preferring to Republic concentrate on the broader responsibility of members of the Ukrainian national movement for propagating antisemitic stereotypes and engaging in anti-Jewish violence. • Antisemitism in the Former Soviet Union: Recent Survey Results
Antisemitism in the Former Soviet Union: Recent Survey Results ROBERT J. BRYM Summary This report is based mainly on a survey of 989 Muscovites conducted in Oc tober 1992 and a survey of 1,000 Jews conducted in Moscow, Kiev and Minsk from February to April 1993. The major findings of the surveys are: • By North American standards negative attitudes towards Jews are wide spread in Moscow. For example, 18 per cent of Muscovites agree or are inclined to agree that there exists a global "Zionist" conspiracy against Russia and another 24 per cent are undecided. This does not, however, suggest that Jews are in imminent physical danger. • In Moscow negative attitudes towards Jews are more widespread among older people, low-income earners and non-Russian Slavs. • Nearly 40 per cent of Jews in Moscow, Kiev and Minsk regard popular hostility as the major source of antisemitism. A quarter of the respondents men tion nationalist organizations, another quarter regard state policy, and a tenth view anti-Jewish articles in the press as the taproot of anti-Jewish feeling. • These perceptions vary from city to city. Muscovites regard organized group antisemitism as more of a problem than do Jews in the other two cities. Kievans are most inclined to think that popular hostility against Jews is highly problematic. Minskers are most likely to view the state apparatus as the main source of antisemitism in their country. • While over 90 per cent of respondents in Moscow, Kiev and Minsk believe that antisemitism exists in their respective countries, 15 per cent more Muscovites than Kievans and Minskers believe that pogroms are likely or certain to break out.

  • Hello Darkness: Antisemitism and Rhetorical Silence in the “Trump Era”
Journal of Contemporary Rhetoric, Vol. 8, No.1/2, 2018, pp. 26-43. Hello Darkness: Antisemitism and Rhetorical Silence in the “Trump Era” Jamie Moshin This essay investigates the simultaneously loud and silent rhetorics of antisemitism that have proliferated leading up to, and since the inception of, the Donald Trump presidency. How is it possible that discourse that seems so obvious, and so antithetical to US ideals, has managed to go either unnoticed or unremarked upon, or has been met with passionate support? The answers to this lie in the difficulty in ascribing authorial intent to silence, in the nebulous space of liminal Whiteness occupied by American Jews, and in Trump’s usage of five strategic rhetorical silences that signify antisemitism: literal; symbolic; dialogic; paraliptic; and dog-whistled. The essay concludes by discussing how the Trump campaign/Cabinet’s attempts to capitalize on White dispossession and utilization of “the radical flank” is helping both to normalize his antisemitic followers and to add to his appeal. Keywords: Jewishness, Antisemitism, Donald Trump, Rhetorical Silence, Dog-whistle While the marchers marched in Charlottesville in August, 2017, I mentioned on Facebook that when I began my PhD over a decade previously, a (likely well-meaning) professor had told me that I shouldn’t pursue a dissertation investigating and retheorizing the place of Jews in the US vis-à-vis race, Whiteness and marginalization. This work was unnecessary, I was told, because we were “past-antisemitism in the United States.” And now here we were, with marchers chanting, “Jews will not replace us.” When I posted this, one (likely well-meaning) acquaintance posted that White Supremacy, and the marches, were not really about the Jews or antisemitism; my personal anecdote was a distraction.
