Message For The Week | DVD Review Page 1 of 2 Wednesday, December 13, 2006 DVD Review A Message Exclusive Look At New Music By: Joe Milliken Wednesday, December 13, 2006 Mission Of Burma was a very short-lived band, however they have been described by critics and musicians alike as "the most influential post-punk band you never heard of your life", and were very much ahead of their time. Formed in 1979 out of Boston, Clint Conly (bass/vocals), Roger Miller (guitar/vocals), Pete Prescott (drums), and Martin Swope (tape effects, looping, soundboard) were a powerful foursome that combined intelligent, art-rock lyrics with the energy and attitude of punk that created noisy-yet-melodic outbursts that would strongly influence everyone from Husker Du, Sonic Youth, The Pixies and REM, to current artists such as Prodigy, Moby and even Nirvana. Unfortunately, the band would only release two singles, one six-track EP titled Signals, Calls And Marches and one full album titled Vs., before being forced to disband because guitarist Miller's hearing was being destroyed. However despite their all-too-brief existence, their impact on the underground indie-rock scene is perhaps without equal, and it is a shame that they didn't survive long enough to reap the rewards of a genre they helped create. After they went their separate ways, Miller and Prescott would continue with various music Mission Of Burma's "Not A projects through the years, but Conly left the music scene altogether, only producing the first Photograph" Yo La Tengo album along the way.

Listening for the Depths of Winter: And a hot debate enters the House floor Austin Bullock — Don’t Wake Me Up At the end of 2020, Providence-based multi-instrumentalist Austin Bullock dropped Don’t Wake Me Up, a satisfying collection of eight songs with wide-ranging influences. A prolific writer, Bullock put out three albums in 2020, all following the theme of “8 hours labor, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest” according to his Bandcamp page. Though it was hard to decipher any kind of throughline, all the songs feature smart arranging and superb guitar playing. He mixes a lot into the stew here, and all the parts are well fleshed out. “Circus Freak” has a kind of dancy Franz Ferdinand vibe, and “How Could You” is a breezy folk tune. Some of the songs off Don’t Wake Me Up make that warbly, Mac Demarco guitar tone the star of the show, like the heavy groover “Deflated.” The leadoff “(I Don’t Want) Another” has the sunny, laid-back tones of Ryland Baxter. The interlocked guitars in “Evaporate” are straight-up Strokes. The best moment comes when Bullock moves away from the modern indie influences completely in the bluesy, psych-infused ”Talk the Talk.” The song’s repetitive, hypnotic riff is something my brain hasn’t been able to shake. There is a homespun basement vibe — Bullock appears to play all the instruments — that is definitely cool, but these songs would really rip with a full band. The act performs as a duo with Lauren Boucher on drums, and hopefully will be playing live at a venue near you soon.

Creative Loafing Atlanta Page 1 of 2 Music Feature Photographic memories Mission of Burma: The most influential band you never heard By T. Ballard Lesemann Published 01.10.2007 http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Content? oid=181128 Mission Of Burma, Boston's finest and most significant punk-rock band, existed for only four years. Its accomplishments were great, however, and inspired and influenced much of the American indie-rock underground -- from R.E.M. and Moby to Hüsker Dü and Sonic Youth. After years of downplaying the idea of a Burma reunion, the members sent shock waves through the underground in late 2001 when they announced plans for several shows to be held in New York, Boston and at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Camber Sands, England, later in 2002. As one fan put it, it was "inexplicable." The reunion occurred when bassist Clint Conley became interested in music again and started writing and playing. Guitarist Roger Miller dropped his objections, believing it was now or never. Drummer Peter Prescott had stepped away from his recent bands and had free time. Those three played together onstage for the first time in 18 years at the last Peer Group show opening for a reunited Wire in Boston; the band was featured prominently in New York music writer Michael Azerrad's excellent history of '80s U.S. indie rock, Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes From the American Indie Underground 1981-1991. Mission of Burma formed in 1979 when Prescott quit the Molls and auditioned for a weird new project headed up by Miller and Conley, who began their careers with Boston punks the Moving Parts.
