ONE OF THE highlights of the sports year will come Nov. 15 when the Javelina Hall of Fame inducts its newest members. Four individuals and three teams will become a part of a Hall that includes some of the most successful coaches and athletes in the history of college athletics. The individual inductees are Sheila Dotson, a two-sport standout in the early 2000s; Cal Hutzler, a football player when the Javelinas had just come under the direction of coaching newcomer Gil Steinke; Ed LaTouf, an All-America football player during the late 1980s, and Anthony Phillips, who was a standout All-American in track and field as well as football. The teams are the 1969 and 1970 track and field units and the 1991-92 men’s basketball squad. Both track and field teams won Lone Star Conference championships and finished fourth in the NAIA national meet in 1969. The 1991-92 basketball team won the first-ever LSC title for the Javelinas and finished third in the NCAA Division II regional playoffs. The Javelina Hall had its first inductions in 1972 and has been a model for other colleges.

It’s really a shame that areas in Texas didn’t get into the bidding process.
