In the past three years we have been viciously attacked by several so-called '‘Agricultural Scientists” (?) of more or less stand ing in new England, and in order to convince the farmers of this part of the country that mineral fertilizer is the only true Plant Food, we have been compelled to make the following proposition:

The New M ineral Fertilizer Company of Boston, Mass., hereby submit the following proposition to any State Agricultural (ollege in the New England StatC^any independent Fertilizer Company in the New England States, any combination of Fertilizer ( Van panics, doing business as a irust, any scientific Agriculturist of standing, provided he accepts this proposition without any outside hacking. The conditions of this contest are as follows : The New Mineral Fertilizer Company will deposit in any banking institution in*Boston, which shall be agreed upon, the sum of One ThOUSand(lOOO) Dollars to be given to the winner, or divided equally among the different Agricultural ( ’ol leges in New England, provided they would like to accept this challenge together, and if so, this amount will be divided equally among them, with the stipulation that the total amount he expended by them towards paying for the bulletins which are sent out to the farmers of New England. t Two (2) acres of average farming land to be jointly selected within a radius of forty (40) miles fiom Boston. From these two (*2) acres they may take their choice of either acre, we having the remaining acre. Each of these acres shall be planted one fourth (t) with yellow Hint corn, one fourth (1) with potatoes, one fourth (i) with tomatoes one fourth (i) with oats—the same variety of seed being used on both acres: best seed obtainable and of standard variety. * | The party accepting this phallenge shall not be limited in any way as to the amount or quality of fertilizer or stable manure which they wish to use, with the exception that they use no Mineral FertiliZGF. They must confine themselves to their established formula of Phosphoric Acid, Nitrogen and Potash. Neither shall they be limited in any way to the amount of labor which they might wish to expend from the tirm* their acre is being plowed up to the time ot harvest. On the other acm we shall agree that no fertilizer or manure other than the New Mineral Fertilizer shall he used. We are making this offer for the benefit of the farmers of New England, and to thoroughly demonstrate whether the present system of Chemical Stimulants is correct, or whether it is possible to raise a bigger crop of a better quality for about one-halt the cost ot the average Chemical Fertilizer on the market to-day. We w ill agree further (provided we win the contest) to deposit a second Thousand ( 1 0 0 0 ) dollars the second year for a similar contest^ on the same land, with the exception that we shall agree not to use an ounce of any fertilizer or sta b le manure or anything else on the acre which we used the New Mineral Fertilizer on, but will depend entirely on the improved condition of the soil to produce our second crop. Both'parties to render a sworn statement the day the crops are harvested, stating the exact numb.r ol pounds ot fertilizer material used during the season on their respective acres, and the market value of same at the time it was applied to the soil. Both acres to be harvested and carefully weighed by three (b) disinterested parties : 0110 to 00 M-h-ctco oy c.e-h contestant, and they to oecete on tin* tmid.
