Michael E. Birdwell, in conjunction with the Upper Cumberland Institute, Tennessee Technological University at Cookeville, prepared this interpretive research package for the Interpretive Services Division of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. The collection arrived in good condition at the Tennessee State Library and Archives from the offices of the Tennessee Historical Commission in the spring of 1997. The collection measures seven cubic feet. Staff removed the documents from three ring binders and placed them into acid free folders and boxes; they did not discard any documents and maintained original order. This collection consists of photocopies of original documents, manuscripts, publications, articles, and excerpts from books. Also included in this collection are photographs, negatives, one cassette tape interview with Cordell Hull’s niece, a video tape copy of the newsreel of the opening meeting of the United Nations in San Francisco, and 16 reels of audio tape dubbed from cassettes by the Center for Popular Music, Middle Tennessee State University. The photographs in this collection are copies of the photographs located at the museum site. The photographs include 720 negatives and 60 contact sheets. Each sheet includes 12 photographs for a total of 720 photographs. The photographs on the contact sheet are 2 1/4 inches square. Some photographs bear an inventory number that corresponds to the inventory of artifacts prepared by Mancil Johnson located in Box 1, f. 7. This collection originally arrived in 31 three ring binders. Each binder received a volume number which now appears in the Container List as the Series Number. The Preface in Box 1, f. 2, contains the detailed description of how the collection was processed, a chronology of Hull’s life, and an Interpretive Services Section prepared by the Tennessee Department of Conservation. The Table of Contents in Box 1, f.1, includes descriptions of documents. The documents beginning with Series 7, Volume 8, include a reference number found in the Table of Contents beginning on page 8. The Table of Contents and Preface substitute for a scope and content note. The discovery of two boxes in March 2020 resulted in an addition which appears as Series 30 in the container list. The first box contains 10 folders regarding the preservation and conservation of the Cordell Hull birthplace. There is a site map of the birthplace; a working inventory; newspaper clippings about the birthplace, the items there, and a call for preservation; and reports on the project, as well as memos from various groups regarding the preservation and conservation of the Cordell Hull collection. The second box contains slides (some identified), three strips of negatives, and one sheet with 2 ½ strips of black and white photographs of people and places pertinent to Cordell Hull. Record Group 268 has undergone microfilming, with the exception of the 2020 addition, and the original documents remain. There are no restrictions on the use of materials in this collection.
