FIRM PHILOSOPHY Our designs are intended to aid society, advance technology, sustain the environment and inspire those around us to improve our world. We believe that architecture has a unique power to influence the world. The creation of our intelligent, high-performance, forward-looking design is to recognize and respect our role in shaping civic life. In the Chicago Central Area DeCarbonization Plan, we offer a comprehensive vision of how Chicago can become much more sustainable, in part by upgrading and in some cases re-purposing existing buildings, and how we can significantly limit the city’s contribution to the causes of climate change.

HISTORY The firm was founded by partners Adrian Smith, Gordon Gill and Robert Forest in Chicago, November 1st, 2006. Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) has grown substantially since its inception in November 2006 with only 7 employees, and in December 2008 the staff totals were reported as 185. This firm has hired other notable designers from top Chicago firms but has continued to have layoffs each year beginning in 2008. In early 2008, AS+GG won the international competition against finalists Foster + Partners, Atkins, Murphy/Jahn, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. And then it beats out Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Pelli Clarke Pelli, Kohn Pedersen Fox, and Atkins with the design of towers and sky bridges. The owners of The Willis Tower looking to update the building selected AS+GG in 2008 in the Chicago Central Area DeCarbonization Plan.

PROJECT TYPE Our work includes civic, commercial, cultural, education, residential, mixed use and hospitality types of projects.

LOCATION: , SOUTH KOREA

COMPLETION: 2013 (scheduled)

BUILDING TYPE: SKYSCRAPER

BUILDING TYPE + PROGRAM This design is a pair of landmark super-tall and mixed-use towers for the new Yongsan International Business District in Seoul, South Korea. It contains a program of residential, officetel and retail. The taller one of the two buildings will be around 450 meters in height, containing offices, apartments, a hotel and shops over a total of 88 floors.

BUILDING DESIGN INTENTIONS The design, which is a part of the larger Yongsan master plan, is inspired by the traditional Korean culture but keeping highly contemporary characteristic. These two mini-towers are mixed used to primarily create living spaces floating beyond the structure. The transparent floor beneath the lowest levels provides the opportunity for people viewing downtown Seoul and the Han River at 360-degree bathed in abundant natural sunlight
