Levine filled his 1940s ranch-style house with midcentury design classics. “Furnishing a home is no different than making music,” he says. “You want to make sure that every stitch has a context uniquely yours.” Clockwise from above: The living room features a well-edited selection of vintage pieces. In the kitchen, a Florence Knoll table is paired with Arne Jacobsen chairs. One end of the master bedroom includes a Wurlitzer baby grand piano and a work on paper by Ed Ruscha. 3 Brooke Shields (below, with her two daughters in her kitchen) toured brownstones all over Manhattan before finding the perfect home to share with her girls and her husband, Chris Henchy, a writer and producer. The circa-1910 Greenwich Village townhouse “needed a complete gut,” she says, “but after a quick walk-through, I could see our future there.” Left: Interior designer David Flint Wood chose Louis XVI–style armchairs and a 1970s Lucite-base cocktail table for the living room. A Keith Haring painting, a gift from the artist, hangs on the wall between portraits by Will Cotton of Shields’s daughters. In the dining room, a tole chandelier is paired with Jansen chairs and a vintage Ralph Lauren Home marble-top pedestal table. Zuber wallpaper lines the room; the wide-plank floor is stained black. Opposite, clockwise from top: The family room is filled with portraits of Shields alone and with her children, including images by Robert Mapplethorpe and Annie Leibovitz, alongside works by Richard Avedon, Adam Fuss, and others. The master bath includes a freestanding tub, a custom-designed vanity by MADE, and a Walker Zanger tile floor. In the master bedroom, an Anglo-Indian tester bed is dressed in John Robshaw block-printed linens; the oil portrait is Edwardian. 8 London-based landscape designer Arabella Lennox-Boyd transformed the once-stark grounds of Villa Palagio—the Tuscan estate purchased by Sting and Trudie Styler (opposite, bottom) in 1997—into a lush oasis. “Arabella believes more is more in a garden, with lots of color and texture, and I applaud her for that,” Styler says. Overlooking the elegant parterre is an ancient cedar of Lebanon. Opposite: A terrace offers views of the couple’s biodynamic vineyards and the Chianti hills beyond. It’s very peaceful, very relaxing.” Below: An English dog painting is displayed over the living room fireplace, while a photograph by Lyndie Benson hangs above the Dutch secretary. “Sheryl loves beautiful things and is definitely a collector,” the designer says. The sisal rug is by Stark. Rob Lowe (above right) and his wife, Sheryl, looked to East Coast precedents when designing their 20-room Georgian-style home—conceived by architect ROB LOWE Don Nulty and decorated by David Phoenix. “We all liked the clean, IN moNTECITO, CALIForNIA efficient lines and proportions of traditional Virginian detailing,” ARCHITECTURE BY DON NULTY Nulty says. Left: “We live on the veranda,” Ralph says of the loggia/dining terrace. “The greenness of Jamaica is gorgeous. The air is very mild. It feels like a paradise. There’s a naturalness and ease of living.” R ICky & ralPH L AUreN IN JAMAICA PHOTOGRAPHY BY DURSTON SAYLOR PORTRAIT BY RICHARD CORMAN 13 Asian accents, such as antique ginger jars and chinoiserie mirrors, contribute to the exotic feel of the living room. “The goal was to make our family comfortable in a luxurious setting,” explains Ricky, who wrote a book inspired by Jamaica called My Island. Just down the hill from the main house is the Laurens’ guesthouse, named the White Orchid; Ralph notes its boatlike feel. Clockwise from top: The guesthouse’s expansive pool deck. Above: The living room’s lantern lamps, sofa fabric, and rug are all by Armani/Casa. 18 Crow decorated each room herself, piece by piece, taking a highly personal, richly layered approach to interior design. “I’m a collector of oddities,” she adds, “stuff that is some- how off-center or off-kilter, things that have their own inner lives and implore you to use your imagination.” In the living room, the sectional sofa and vintage table are from 22 Bond St., while the vintage Italian pendant lamp was purchased at Obsolete. The land has a fascinating energy.” 20 Several years ago, when historic Dumfries House teetered on the verge of sale and dispersal, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales (below) stepped in and negotiated the estate’s purchase. Designed by the brothers Adam, furnished by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, and now preserved for posterity through the efforts of the prince, the Palladian villa is considered the most gloriously intact 18th-century house in Scotland. PR INCE CHarleS IN SCOTlaND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DERRY MOORE 21 The elaborate interiors were over- seen by two of England’s preeminent designers, David Mlinaric and Baron Piers von Westenholz. The goal was to make the estate “like a grand British country house should be—comfortable and elegant,” says Westenholz. Emblems of the harvest are carved into the paneling of the Pink Dining Room; the painting is by Venetian artist Jacopo Bassano, and the curtains are orna- mented with antique tassels and trim. Top: The mahogany chairs and settee in the Blue Drawing Room were supplied by Chippendale in 1759; he also created the rare rosewood breakfront bookcase. The Murano-glass chandelier is original to Dumfries House, the chinoiserie mirror is by William Mathie, and the gilt-wood table is by George Mercer. Left: Portraits fill the walls of a skylit gallery. Above: A team of 20 artisans restored the Chippendale four-poster in the Family Bedroom; brilliant blue silk damask covers even the canopy’s cresting. 24 “I wanted something elegant and gorgeous and at the same time rather masculine and raw,” Butler says of the loft’s overall tone. The sofa and ottoman in the living area are by ABC Carpet & Home. Gerard Butler (left) worked with architect Alexander Gorlin and film production designer Elvis Restaino on his 3,300-square-foot loft in Manhattan. “I wanted a home in the middle of the craziness,” the actor says. Above: “Your possibilities when working with a production designer are endless,” Restaino says. For the dining area, they commissioned a custom-made table the designer calls “thick and heavy and permanent.” Gerard BUTler IN NEW YORK ARCHITECTURE BY ALEXANDER GORLIN ARCHITECTS INTERIOR DESIGN BY ELVIS RESTAINO PHOTOGRAPHY BY DURSTON SAYLOR 26 Sir Elton John and his husband, filmmaker David Furnish (shown at left with a work by Damien Hirst), asked decorator Martyn Lawrence Bullard to develop a 1970s-inspired design for their Los Angeles residence.

In a bid to escape exile in Crete, Icarus uses wings made from wax and feathers made by his father, the Athenian master craftsman Daedalus. But the sin of hubris causes him to pay no heed to his father’s warnings. He fl ies too close to the sun, so burning his wings, and falls into the Tsea and drowns. The parable is often used to highlight the perils of pride and the reckless, impulsive behaviour that it fosters. The frontier nature of celebrity culture perpetuates and enlarges narcissistic characteristics in stars and stargazers. Impulsive behaviour and recklessness are commonplace. They fi gure prominently in the entertainment pages and gossip columns of newspapers and magazines, prompting commentators to conjecture about the contagious effects of celebrity culture upon personal health and the social fabric. Do celebrities sometimes get too big for their boots and get involved in social and political issues that are beyond their competence? Can one posit an Icarus complex in some types of celebrity behaviour? This chapter addresses these questions by examining celanthropy and its discontents (notably Madonna’s controversial adoption of two Malawi children); celebrity health advice (Tom Cruise and Scientology); and celebrity pranks (the Sachsgate phone calls involving Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross).

ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST THE INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE OF DESIGN JANUARY 2011 Architect Marc Appleton and decorator Windsor Smith collaborated on the expansion and redesign—or de-decoration, as Smith calls it— of a 1926 house by celebrated architect George Washington Smith. The southwest facade remained untouched; rooms overlooking the lawn include (from left) the dining room, living room, and garden room. 94 LIVING UP TO A LEGEND Reimagining a Los Angeles mansion, Marc Appleton and Windsor Smith pay homage to the work of a 1920s tastemaker In the garden room, a 19th-centu ry Chinese lacquer screen is displayed against silvered wallpaper with hand-painted additions in gouache by Scott Waterman. Furnishings include a Moderne gilded console table with leather shelves by Richard Shapiro Studiolo, a zebra-print stool from Paul Marra Design, and a Parsons-style low table from Eccola. HE STRANGE THING ABOUT SOUTHERN California in the years following World War I was that, even after decades of statehood, it still needed to be invented. And no one quite knew what it should look like. In the wake of the war, as Americans resumed their European grand tours, the haciendas of Spain and the villas of Italy suddenly began to appeal to citizens in search of a romanticized image for the New West. California architects, armed with large-scale picture books that documented these European estates in detail, wasted no time in designing expansive and comfortable houses recalling the Mediterranean. The strong sun sculpted the solid walls into planes of light and shadow; austere stucco surfaces silhouetted exotic plants. It was a go.

Because she values being able to relate to the spectators, Jones particularly relishes working on stage, but she has also appeared in a number of films, including a television movie about a lesbian couple and the legal battle to retain custody of their daughter. Jones began acting at an early age, "playing everything from Tarzan to cowboys-and-Indians to Romeo and Juliet" in the woods in Paris, Tennessee, the town where she was born on November 21, 1956. Her parents encouraged her interest by sending her to classes with Ruby Crider, a local drama teacher. Seeing Colleen Dewhurst in Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten caused Jones, then sixteen, to aspire to be a professional actress herself. Her grandmother, Thelma Cherry, supported her in this ambition, and Crider helped her get into the acting program at Carnegie Mellon University.

Lipstick Jungle's Kim Raver proves it's possible to have it all The best things to do, see, eat and buy in NY COVER Power Woman Lipstick Jungle’s Kim Raver proves it is possible to have it all. By Rachel Bowie im Raver hearts New York. In fact, she loves it so much that she’s embraced the city’s most effi cient way Kof getting around — taking the subway. But as Raver’s career reaches new heights, going incognito under- ground is becoming more and more diffi cult for the native New Yorker. “People come up to me on the sub- way and ask, ‘Do you know Kim Raver?’” she laughs. “This one guy was so persistent and kept saying, ‘But you look so much like her!’ Maybe they know and they’re just trying to get me to say, ‘It’s me!’ It’s really very funny.” If you ask us, getting recognized underground — or anywhere else in the city — is something Raver better get used to. This fall, she returns to the small screen for the second season of NBC’s Lipstick Jungle, a series about three successful New York women (played by Raver, Brooke Shields and Lindsay Price) struggling to manage their busy lives and, in turn, have it all. Raver plays Nico Reilly, editor-in-chief of Bonfi re magazine, giving a performance that is both touching and heartfelt, not to mention one that hits home for many of the show’s view- ers.
