Rachel Graham. Gender Role Reinforcement in Popular Magazine Advertising. A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S. degree. April, 2003. 27 pages. Advisor: Claudia J. Gollop. One month’s issue of five men’s (Details, Esquire, GQ, Maxim, and Stuff) and five women’s (Cosmopolitan, Elle, Glamour, MarieClaire, and Vogue) fashion and leisure magazines were examined for the types of products advertised. If the advertising reflected traditional gender roles, the women’s magazines would advertise products that focus on changing the self, while the men’s magazines would advertise lifestyle- enhancing products. Results showed that both the men’s and the women’s magazines had many pages of clothing and accessories advertising. The women’s magazines did contain more advertising of personal care products, and the men’s magazines contained more advertising of lifestyle products. However, the women’s magazines did contain some lifestyle products advertising, and the men’s magazines also contained some personal care products advertising, so it was not split totally across gender lines. Headings: Advertising, Magazine – United States Men’s magazines Sex role in advertising Women’s periodicals, American GENDER ROLE REINFORCEMENT IN POPULAR MAGAZINE ADVERTISING by Rachel Graham A Master’s paper submitted to the faculty of the School of Information and Library Science of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Library Science. • In This Week's Issue
For Immediate Release: February 27, 2017 IN THIS WEEK’S ISSUE What Lay Behind Russia’s Interference in the 2016 Election—and What Lies Ahead? In the March 6, 2017, issue of The New Yorker, in “Active Measures” (p. 40), Evan Osnos in Washington, David Remnick in New York, and Joshua Yaffa in Moscow report on Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and, through interviews with key government and secu- rity voices in both countries, examine this front in the new Cold War. For many national-security officials, the Russian hacks of the Dem- ocratic National Committee and members of Hillary Clinton’s campaign were part of a larger picture: Putin’s desire to damage American confidence and to undermine the Western alliances—diplomatic, financial, and military—that have shaped the postwar world. Benjamin Rhodes, the deputy national-security adviser under President Obama, told The New Yorker, “The new phase we’re in is that the Russians have moved into an offensive posture that threatens the very international order.” The level of tension has alarmed experienced hands on both sides. Robert Gates, the Secretary of Defense under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, said, “I think the new Administra- tion has a big challenge in front of it in terms of stopping the downward spiral in the U.S.-Russia relationship while pushing back against Putin’s aggression and general thuggery.” Sergey Rogov, of the Institute for U.S. and Canadian Studies, in Moscow, said, “I spent many years in the trenches of the first Cold War, and I don’t want to die in the trenches of the second.” Putin, in his first few years in office, was relatively solicitous of the West.

  • Portland, Oregon
Portland, Oregon No arts organization in Portland exemplifies the aesthetic and economic challenges of the moment—and the creative successes in tackling them—quite like The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA). PICA was launched in 1995 by Kristi Edmunds, a 29-year-old curator and activist. She’d already made a success of a Portland Art Museum performance series that showcased the likes of Rinde Eckert, Spalding Gray and Holly Hughes. But when a change in museum leader- ship created doubts about that institution’s com- mitment to edgy, contemporary work, Edmunds quit. After several months of quiet networking and planning, she started PICA with the help of a handful of artists and friends and a $160,000 shoestring for a budget. Since then, she’s used her vision, energy and connections to turn it into Portland’s most vig- orous cultural programmer. Its dozens of per- formances and exhibitions, such as Diamanda Galas’ gothic opera, Danny Hoch’s hip-hop- steeped storytelling, sculptor Roland Brener’s suburb of cardboard houses and Karen Finley’s notorious performance art, have sketched an intriguing eclecticism. And PICA has found a hungry audience. First- year attendance, 6,500 for ten events, was consid- ered a surprising success. This past spring, the Robert Wilson/Philip Glass collaboration “Monsters of Grace” (co-commissioned by PICA) drew nearly 5,000 in one night. PICA devotees attend not so much trusting in a good time as wel- coming something new to think about. Edmunds doesn’t program what she thinks “is the best of X, Y or Z,” but what she believes will connect Portland artists and audiences to “different pock- ets of aesthetic conversation around the country.” Even more than through programming skills, she’s built the organization through a combination of grassroots volunteerism, inno- vative corporate partnerships, and patronage from the area’s new money—computers and athletic shoes—more than its old—land and lumber.

  • The Best Domains in Life Are Free? Freenom Partners with '.Gq' Equatorial Guinea
The best domains in life are free? Freenom partners with ‘.gq’ Domain names Equatorial Guinea - Hogan Lovells LLP January 19 2015 A number of country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) registries offer domain name registrations free of charge. The most famous example is ‘.tk’, the ccTLD for Tokelau, a small group of Pacific islands located off the coast of New Zealand. This business model of free domain name registrations has enabled ‘.tk’ to become the largest ccTLD in terms of number of domain name registrations under management (with over 27 million registered domain names), and the second largest TLD behind ‘.com’. Boosted by this success, Freenom, the company that operates the ‘.tk’ registry, has also partnered with other ccTLDs, namely Mali (‘.ml’), Gabon (‘.ga’) and the Central African Republic (‘.cf’) in order to operate their ccTLDs on the same model of free domain name registrations. It appears that this business model holds some appeal to certain ccTLD registries, as Freenom has recently partnered with another country, Equatorial Guinea, in order to develop its ccTLD, ‘.gq’. The launch of ‘.gq’ took place on October 1 2014 according to the following schedule: l Sunrise period (giving priority to trademark holders) - October 1 to October 31 2014. l Landrush period - November 1 to November 30 2014. l General availability - from December 1 2014 onwards. There are no restrictions to register under ‘.gq’ and thus anyone can apply for any domain name. Free domain names were available only as from December 1 when general availability started. To be able to register a domain name for free, registrants need to "have a website, homepage or web page online on an existing web address or the capability of setting up [their] own website/server with content".

ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST THE INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE OF DESIGN JANUARY 2011 Architect Marc Appleton and decorator Windsor Smith collaborated on the expansion and redesign—or de-decoration, as Smith calls it— of a 1926 house by celebrated architect George Washington Smith. The southwest facade remained untouched; rooms overlooking the lawn include (from left) the dining room, living room, and garden room. 94 LIVING UP TO A LEGEND Reimagining a Los Angeles mansion, Marc Appleton and Windsor Smith pay homage to the work of a 1920s tastemaker In the garden room, a 19th-centu ry Chinese lacquer screen is displayed against silvered wallpaper with hand-painted additions in gouache by Scott Waterman. Furnishings include a Moderne gilded console table with leather shelves by Richard Shapiro Studiolo, a zebra-print stool from Paul Marra Design, and a Parsons-style low table from Eccola. HE STRANGE THING ABOUT SOUTHERN California in the years following World War I was that, even after decades of statehood, it still needed to be invented. And no one quite knew what it should look like. In the wake of the war, as Americans resumed their European grand tours, the haciendas of Spain and the villas of Italy suddenly began to appeal to citizens in search of a romanticized image for the New West. California architects, armed with large-scale picture books that documented these European estates in detail, wasted no time in designing expansive and comfortable houses recalling the Mediterranean. The strong sun sculpted the solid walls into planes of light and shadow; austere stucco surfaces silhouetted exotic plants. It was a go.
