Mill Valley Oral History Program a Collaboration Between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library
Mill Valley Oral History Program A collaboration between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library AUSTIN DE LONE An Oral History Interview Conducted by Debra Schwartz in 2016 © 2016 by the Mill Valley Public Library TITLE: Oral History of Austin de Lone INTERVIEWER: Debra Schwartz DESCRIPTION: Transcript, 17 pages INTERVIEW DATE: July 7th, 2016 In this oral history, musician and songwriter Austin de Lone recounts his musical career and his decades-long residence in Mill Valley. Born outside of Philadelphia in 1946, Austin started piano lessons at the age of 12 and took up the guitar at 16. In 1969, after a stint at Harvard, he formed the band Eggs Over Easy with Jack O’Hara and Brien Hopkins. Austin recounts being a young musician in New York and London in the late 1960s, pioneering what would subsequently be called “pub rock” in England. In 1972, he moved to Mill Valley with his band, and was immediately struck by the “fantastic mix” of people who then inhabited the town. Austin reminisces about Mill Valley’s bars in the 1970s, especially the Old Mill Tavern and the Sweetwater, and describes the local music scene during that culturally dynamic period. Austin concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family life and some reflections on how Mill Valley has changed since he made it his home. © All materials copyright Mill Valley Public Library. A world permeated by the odour of stale tobacco and overflowing toilets; a world where your feet stick to the carpet and the walls are covered in peeling flock wallpaper. The Watneys Red Barrel is warm, but the band on stage is hot. Welcome to the world of 1970s pub rock. Groups disillusioned with mainstream music - such as Eggs Over Easy, Brinsley Schwarz, Kilburn and the High Roads, Joe Strummers' 101ers, Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers, Ducks Deluxe and Ace - sought refuge from a musical landscape ruled by stodgy prog rock heavyweights and fluy glam lightweights. -
Bill Kirchen Word of the Wise the Guests
Bill Kirchen Word of The Wise the guests Maria Muldaur I was Maria D'Amato's fan from her early days with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. I first saw her at Boston's Club 47, Ann Arbor's Canterbury House, and the Newport Folk Festivals, all in the midsixties. As a long time fan I was delighted to get to play guitar with her for a short run of gigs in the late 70's, including an eye opening concert on New Year's Day in San Quentin penitentiary. Her post Jug Band records with her then husband Geoff Muldaur and Amos Garrett are some of my favorite discs. She continues to perform and make great records today. Maria and I sing Ain't Got Time For The Blues, a tune I wrote specifically for her, mindful of her status as Queen of the Lost Oasins tribe. Dan Hicks Dan started making the swingingest, most original and often funniest pop records of the day beginning in the late 60's, and has never let up. I first shared the stage with him in 1970 for an encore performance of the Hawaiian favorite Hukilau. We had all 21 musicians from three bands (Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks, Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, and Asleep At The Wheel) on stage, plus grass skirts and palm trees. I played guitar in his Christmas Jug Band for a few shows as well, and my band once backed Dan for a rockabilly veined set. In 1966 back in Ann Arbor I'd owned a record by his seminal San Francisco band The Charlatans which got and held my attention. -

BOBROLLINGBRUCEDAVIDLED ZEPPELINDYLAN BOWIE SPRINGSTEEN STONES BOBMILESVANGRAMNEIL MORRISONMARLEYYOUNG PARSONSDAVISV Welcome to 1973 THIS IS A year in which everyone seems to be saying goodbye. At the start of the year, Leonard Cohen comes to London to say that he is deeply troubled by the music business, and that he's planning a dignified exit. Later in the year, Neil Young says much the same. Brian Eno leaves Roxy, as Ronnie Lane does the Faces. David Bowie, meanwhile, apparently quits music altogether. Those that remain, however, reap some rich rewards. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who or our cover stars Pink Floyd have now all escaped their niches in the previous decade, to flourish in a new context. Zeppelin play to more people than ever before, duly making an enormous amount of money. Floyd do likewise, but are troubled by their conscience and by their past. For Floyd, the absence of Syd Barrett (and the mental unrest that contributed to it) is articulated in one of the most successful records of all time. Perhaps in homage to a man who was not there, the band fail to appear at the launch for The Dark Side Of The Moon. 1973 also brings dramatic new arrivals. The Wailers and their frontman Bob Marley have suffered hardships in the Jamaican music business, but now finally find a patron who will treat them fairly. In New York, the singer Bruce Springsteen is signed by John Hammond- the man who took a chance on Bob Dylan. -
