I have the utmost respect for what they do and how much they sacrifice for their students. I’d like to especially thank Professor Daryl Moen for working closely with me and pushing me to perform the best research possible. I definitely need to thank the former creative director at Gannett’s Des Moines Design Studio, Nathan Groepper, for giving me an opportunity to work there. My team leaders at the studio, Sean McKeown-Young and Jeremy Gustafson, were particularly awesome in pushing me to be a better and more thoughtful designer. Lastly, I’d like to thank my parents, Janet and Daniel Brisson for their love and support. I would not be here without them — not just in the literal sense, but also because their judgment and beliefs have driven me in probably everything I do. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS . ii LIST OF TABLES . iv ABSTRACT . v KEYWORDS . vi Chapter 1. • 2016 Annual Report
GREETINGS SUPPORTERS Thank you for believing in Radio Milwaukee and for recognizing our positive impact on the creativity, diversity, and vibrancy of our city. It is the collective effort of our donors, underwriters, volunteers, staff, and listeners that makes everything we do possible. As we head into our second decade on the air, we will remember 2016 as a year of transition, growth, and impact. First, we had a very smooth leadership transition. A heartfelt thanks goes out to Mary Louise Mussoline for her seven years of service as Executive Director. In March, we celebrated Mary Louise and dedicated our beautiful Walker’s Point home to her. And then in June, we celebrated the beginning of Glenn Kleiman’s tenure as Executive Director. I am proud of our staff and Board of Directors for making it a successful transition. Second, 2016 brought tremendous growth. We reached a record 4,500 contributing Members; our listenership grew 7 percent; our average number of monthly website visitors increased by 12,000; and our social media followers grew 34 percent. Program growth included the addition of high quality video storytelling and regular “Music News” on-air and online. TIGERNITE Finally, we celebrate 2016 as a year of strengthening 88Nine’s impact on 414 MUSIC LIVE our beloved city. Because 88Nine presents stories with inclusive voices and holds events that convene diverse people through our Cultural Commons initiative, barriers between people come down and we make progress toward a better and more unified Milwaukee. And because we highlight all the good things about our city, local pride grows and the city is better MISSION equipped to attract and retain young talent.

FKP Scorpio Konzertproduktionen GmbH Große Elbstr. 277 a ∙ 22767 Hamburg Tel.

MOAB IS MY WASHPOT Stephen Fry For You The Book of D., Verse 10, Chapter 11 To live is to war with trolls in heart and soul. To write is to sit in judgement on oneself. Henrik Ibsen The interests of a writer and the interests of his readers are never the same and if, on occasion, they happen to coincide, this is a lucky accident. W. H. Auden MOAB IS MY WASHPOT Joining In ‘Look Marguerite... England!’ Closing lines of The Scarlet Pimpernel, 1934 1 FOR SOME REASON I recall it as just me and Bunce. No one else in the compartment at all. Just me, eight years and a month old, and this inexpressibly small dab of misery who told me in one hot, husky breath that his name was Samuelanthonyfarlowebunce. I remember why we were alone now. My mother had dropped us off early at Paddington Station. My second term. The train to Stroud had a whole carriage reserved for us. Usually by the time my mother, brother and I had arrived on the platform there would have been a great bobbing of boaters dipping careless farewells into a sea of entirely unacceptable maternal hats. Amongst the first to arrive this time, my brother had found a compartment where an older boy already sat amongst his opened tuck-box, ready to show off his pencil cases and conker skewers while I had moved respectfully forward to leave them to it. I was still only a term old after all. Besides, I wasn’t entirely sure what a conker skewer might be.
