Schon bereits die zweite Single »The House Of The Rising Sun« war der schnelle unerwartete weltweite Durchbruch. Schade !! Weitere große Chart-Hits waren »Don´t Let Me Be Misunderstood«, »I´m Crying«, »Bring It On Home To Me« sowie die sozialkritischen »We Gotta Get Out Of This Place« und »It´s My Life«. So finden sich hierauf furiose Live-Versionen von Bandklassikern wie »Don´t Let Me Be Misunderstood«, »We Gotta Get Out Of This Place«, »It´s My Life«, aber auch die Burdon- Klassiker »See See Rider«, »When I Was Young«, »Monterey« oder »San Franciscan Nights«. Den internationaleren Hit und Evergreen »The House Of The Rising Sun« sucht man leider vergebens. Chance vergeben, meint man. Aber auch die zweite Zusammenstellung mit »The Complete Live Broadcasts 1: 1964- 1966« (2019:

THE CLASH AND MASS MEDIA MESSAGES FROM THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS Sean Xavier Ahern A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill © 2012 Sean Xavier Ahern All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis analyzes the music of the British punk rock band The Clash through the use of media imagery in popular music in an effort to inform listeners of contemporary news items. I propose to look at the punk rock band The Clash not solely as a first wave English punk rock band but rather as a “news-giving” group as presented during their interview on the Tom Snyder show in 1981. I argue that the band’s use of communication metaphors and imagery in their songs and album art helped to communicate with their audience in a way that their contemporaries were unable to. Broken down into four chapters, I look at each of the major releases by the band in chronological order as they progressed from a London punk band to a globally known popular rock act. Viewing The Clash as a “news giving” punk rock band that inundated their lyrics, music videos and live performances with communication images, The Clash used their position as a popular act to inform their audience, asking them to question their surroundings and “know your rights.” iv For Pat and Zach Ahern Go Easy, Step Lightly, Stay Free. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This thesis would not have been possible without the help of many, many people.

The concert of the Animals & Friends, Muzyczna Owczarnia, Szczawnica-Jaworki, 10th and 11th April 2016. This place is magical, here we can all be together, No matter who we are, no matter where we come from, Here peace and goodwill fills the air, here we are closer to God, While the music brings us together in joy. Even the most abstractive dreams come true. When I read on the website of Muzyczna Owczarnia that the Animals & Friends would perform at Wietek Kołodziejski, I could not believe that. Theoretical and practical thoughts ran through my mind as quickly as lightning, and then I called Wietek to ask him for a ticket and to Grzegorz Kasprzyk to book accommodation at his Koliba (chalet). Muzyczna Owczarnia. The interest was so high that there were two concerts: on Sunday 10th and on Monday 11th. I arrived in Jaworki on Saturday to tune myself in this emotional atmosphere:) Sylwia, Wietk’s wife, had everything ready. The musicians came on Sunday at 3 p.m. with Łukasz Gorczyca and Sebastian Kowol. Their presence was meaningful so there is a short mention about them. Łukasz Gorczyca - basist, composer, author of numerous projects, known from cooperation with many famous domestic and foreign musicians. • North Shields Town Trail
North Shields Town Trail The North Shields Town Trail is a two and half mile circular walk around the town which includes the town centre, Linskill Centre, Northumberland Park and the Fish Quay. The walk takes in many places of interest and buildings of historical note. There is a section of the route (to the Fish Quay via Tanners Bank and back via Union Quay Stairs) which has limited access. An accessible route is available from exiting Northumberland Park and rejoins the route at Tyne Street. The majority of the route is level and on designated footpaths however some surfaces are uneven in places and the terrain in Northumberland Park is undulating. The large print version is designed to be used in conjunction with the published trail, or a version downloaded from www.northshieldstowntrail.org, which includes a detailed route map. North Shields has a vibrant town centre; a green haven in the lovingly restored Victorian era Northumberland Park and a historic working fish quay. Three distinct characteristics of the town are brought together in a circular walk. Step out and discover more about the town’s past, the natural life that thrives in urban North Shields and the fascinating story of the Fish Quay. The original settlement dates to the early 1200s when a series of “shielings” or “shiels” – fisherman’s huts – were established on the Fish Quay. It is from these dwellings that the town gets its name, the shielings being on the North bank of the river. As the town developed, it spread away from the Fish Quay in the 18th Century to its current location with the building of elegant town houses that were home to the wealthy.
