UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of The Study

Literature is an art of literary works such as novels, magazines, and books.

Literature consist of written productions, often restriting to those deemed to have artistict or intellectual value. Roberts and Jacobs (1993:1) say that literature refers to composition that tell stories, dramatize situations, express emotions, analyze, and advocate ideas. Literature has four categories or genres (1) prose fiction, (2) poetry,

(3) drama, and (4) nonfiction prose. The writers chooses on prose fiction, exactly on novel.

Whitla (2010:155) says novel is an extended work of prose fiction, longer than a short story or a medium length fiction, called a novelette or novella. It means that novel is a long narrative, normally in prose, which describes fictional characters and events, usually in the form of a sequential story.

This paper is about the main characters of novel, we know that novel is a part of literature. Character is one of important element in fiction, especially novel.

The main characters could be more than one in novel, they are an antagonist and protagonist.

The writer focus on main characters in the novel Don’t You Forget About Me, they are Tess and Seb. Tess is a heartbroken girl when seb breaks up with her and can’t help blaming herself. If only she’d done things diffrently. If only she could make right all her regrets but she can’t. It’s over. She has to forget about him.

Drunk and upset on New Year’s Eve, she wishes she’d never met him. But when

2. Review Of Related Literature

2.1 Novel

Novel is a form literature in which there are cultural values, social, educational, and moral. That means the novel is a prose essay which contains a series of stories that highlight the nature and character of the perpetrarors.

Rees ( 1973:106 ) says that novel is a fictional prose narrative of considerable lenght in which characters and actions representative of real life are potrayed in a plot of more or less complexity. In other words a novel is a piece of prose fiction of a reasonable length.

Watson (1979:4) says a novel is a way to learning about how things were or are cognitive isntrument, and those who distrust stories as evidence should consider how often coversation we use them to make a point or answer questions. It means novel has many function to inform or make a points or in some subjects of distrust stories.

The novel is a literary prose shaped like a short strory. Both novel and short story tell all events or problems that occur in human life. The difference takes place in historian. Short story kinds to be single plot and limited in member but novel is longer.

Wellek and Werren (1956:216) say novel is a picture of real life and manners and of time in which it is written. Or novel is a form of literature which is fiction in the form of words or writings that have intrinsic and extrinsic elements.

4

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

1. Extrinsic Element

Extrinsic element is an element of the building from the outside of literary

work, such as the ecenomic aspects of the author, culture, religion,

background writer, and education writer.

2. Intrinsic Element

Intrinsic element is an element that builds a paper or essay novel of the

structure that will embody literary works, such as theme, character or

characterizations, plot, setting, point of view, the style of the language used

and the mandate. In this paper, the writer uses intrinsic element that tells about

character or characterization.

There are some kinds of novel, they are: action adventure, crime, detective, fantasy or fairytale, horror, thriller, romance, science, and fiction. .

2.2 Plot

Plot is based on the interactions of causes and effects as they develop sequentially or chronologically. In a well done story, all the actions or incidents, speech, thoughts, and observations are linked together to make up an entirety, sometimes called an organic unity.

5

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Robert and Jacobs ( 1993:88 ) says that plot is stories made up mostly of actions or incidents that follow each other sequentially. Finding A sequentially or narrative order, however, is only the first step toward the more important consideration. The plot, or the controls governing the development of the actions.

Stanton (1965:14 ) suggested the plot is a story that contains the sequence of events, but each incident is only connected in cause and effect, an event which caused or led to the occurrence of other events.

Plot is a important element of fiction or literary work, even most of the readers consider it as the important element among the other elements of a novel.

Stanton stated that plot is a story that consist of events order, but each event is connected by cuasality.

One event is caused or caused the others. Kenny says that plot is the events shown in a story, which are arranged according to causality. The existence of the plot depends on there essential elements: event, conflict, and climax.

Event can be meant by change one situation to the other. Conflict is a dramatic thing, directed to competition between two balanced powers and show action – reaction.

Event and conflict usually have a close relation. They can cause each other, actually conflict is event.

Plot is what the characters thought, did and said. It is the action proper given unity by the enveloping action, the universal action, and the archetypal action. As Aristole said, What gives a story unity is not as the masses believe that it is about one person but that it is about one action.

6

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

2.3 Character

Stanton ( 1965:17 ) says that the use character terms itself in any english suggest two different , that is as the story characters presented, and as personality, attraction, willing, emotion, and moral principil possessed by the characters. It means that character can be explained on two things: first, as a character in a story, it means that the character indicates to the person who plays in the story, for example as the answer of the question:

“who is the main character in this novel?” or “who is the protagonist in this novel?” and so on. The character indicates to characteristics and attitude of the player. In addition, more indicates to the personal quality of a player in a story. According to Jones (1968:33 ) states that charcterization is the description of clear image about someone who appeared in a story. And the second, as a character’s personality, attraction, emotion and moral.

Robert and Jacobs (1993:4 ) say that character may be defined as a verbal representation of a human being. Through action, speech, description, and commentary, author potray charactes who is worth carrying about, rooting for, and even loving, altought there are also characters you may laugh at, dislike, or even hate. In a story emphasizing a major characters, you may expect that each action or speech, no matter how small, is part of a total presentation of that complex combination of both the inner and outer self that constitutes a human being.

There are five ways to present their characters, they are action, descriptions, both personal and environmental, dramatic statements and thoghts, statement by other characters and statement by the author speaking as story teller or observer. There are also two types of character, they are round character and flat character.

7

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

There are two types of character. The british novelist and critic E. M. Forster, calls the two major types are “round” and “flat”. Round character is a major character in a work of fiction and flat character is a minor character in a work of fiction.

Round character is a major character in a work of fiction and flat character is a minor character in a work of fiction. Round Character is figure with many different characteristics and undergo development, and sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader. The basic of trait of round character are that they recognized, change with, or adjust to circumstances. Robert and Jacobs (1993:133 ) says that round character usually the main figure in a story. They usually play a major role in a story, round characters are often called the hero or heroine.

Many main characters are anything but heroic. The protagonist is the central to the action, moves against an antagonist, and exhibits the ability to adapt to new circumstances.

To the degree that around characters are both individual and sometimes unpredictable, and because they undergo change or growth, they are dynamic.

Flat character is so contrast with round character, flat character does not grow.

They remain the same because they may be stupid or intensive or lacking in knowledge or insight. They end where they begin and are static not dynamic. But flat characters are not therefore worthless, for they usually highlight the development of the round characters. Sometimes flat characters are prominent in certain types of literature, such characters might be lively and engaging , even though they do not develop or change.

8

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA They must be strong, tough, and clever enough to perform recurring tasks like solving a crime, overcoming a villian, or finding a treasure. The term stock character refers to characters in this to degree that stock characters have many common traits they are representative of their class or group. Such characters with variation in names, ages, sexes, have been constant in literature since the ancient Greeks.

Character can be distinguished to protagonist character and antagonist character.

When read a novel, the readers always identify themselves with the certain character that can give sympathy or empathy, and involve emotionally with the character.

Protagonist is a character that many people like. A protagonist is sometimes called “hero” by the audience or readers. Protagonist is identical with all the good character inside the actors which had been choosen and created by the author.

Alterbernd and Lewis (1966:59 ) say that protagonist is character that admired characters that are norms personifications, the values, which ideal for reader.

A protagonist is the main character in the story. The readers often give sympathy to the protagonist character. In short words, everything felt, thought, and done by the character represent us. The self-identification towrad the character is an emphaty given by the readers.

A fiction must have a conflict and a pressure had by protagonist. The Protagonist is the central to the action, moves against an antagonist, and exhibits the ability to adapt to new circumstances.

In contrast, antagonist is a character that many people do not like. Luxemburg

(1992:145 ) says that antagonist is the opposite character of protagonist either physically and psychologically. The antagonist character usually causes conflict for protagonist. Altough there are other things such as disaster, accident environment and

9

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA society, social rules, moral values, authority can cause conflict but if it is not done by a character, they are called as antagonist force.

Foster (1970:101 ) says that an antagonist is the character who opposes to the protagonist, the person that help cause conflict for the protagonist.

There are character traits in literature. Roberts and Jacobs (1993:132) say that a trait is a quality of mind or habitual mode of behaviour. Sometimes, of course, the traits we encounter are minor and therefore negligible. But often a trait may be a person’s primary characteristic (not only in fiction but also in real life).

There are also the way of character disclosed innovel. Roberts and Jacobs (1993:132) say that an author uses five ways to present their characters in the novel. As the reader, we must use our knowledge and experience to make judgements about the qualities of characters being revealed. The five ways that an author uses to present their characters are:

1. Actions

What Characters do is our best way to understand what or who they are. As

the ordinary human beings, fictional characters do not necessarily understand

how they may be changing or why they do things they do nevertheless, their

actions express their characters.

2. Descriptions (Personal and Environmental)

Appearance and environment reveal much about character’s social and

economic status, but they also teel us more about character traits.

10

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA 3. Dramatic Statements and Thoughts

Altought the speeches of most characters are functional essential to keep the story moving along they provide material from which we can draw conclusions.

Often, characters use speech to hide their motivate, though we as readers should see through such a ploy.

4. Statements by Other characters

By studying what characters say about each other, we can enhance our understanding of the character being discussed. Ironically, the characters doing the talking often indicate something other than what they intend perhaps because of prejudice, stupidity, or foolishness.

5. Statements by The Author Speaking As Story Teller or Observer

What the author says about the character is usually accurate, and the authorial voice can be accepted factually. However, when the authorial voice interprets actions and characterisitic, the author assumes the role of a reader or critic, and any opinions may be questioned. For this reason, authors frequently avoid interpretations and devote their skill to arranging events and speeches so that readers may draw their own conclusions.

11

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA

2.4 Theme

Theme is the central idea of novel. In a novel, must have a theme, the author will thinks about what themes will be created. Robert and Jacob (1993:53) say that in fiction, ideas take the form of an underlying theme or central idea, which helps to tie the work together. Fiction necessarily embodies issues and ideas. Even stories written for entertaiment alone are based in an idea or position.

The process of determining and describing the themes or ideas in stories is probably never complete. One of the ways in which we may judge stories is to determine the degree to which they embody a number of valid and important themes.

2.5 Setting

Setting in literary work is important because it may be stir the reader’s imagination as well as reveal the significance of the action. The element of setting can be differentiated into three principle element, they are: setting of places, setting of time, and setting of society. Althought each of these elements offer situations but actually the are close influence each other.

Robert and Jacobs (1995:230 ) say that setting is the natural, manufactured, political, cultural, and temporal environment, including everything that characters know and own.

12

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Characters may be either helped or hurt by their surroundings, and they may fight about possession and goals. Further, as characters speak with each other, they reveal the degree to which they share the customs and ideas of their times.

Setting is a critical component for asisting the story, in some stories the setting becomes a character itself.

4. CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

4.1 Conclusion
